“Steinway & Sons mourns the loss of New Age pioneer and Steinway Artist George Winston, who passed away at the age of 73. Winston was a pioneering artist for Windham Hill records and preferred to describe his sound as 'Folk Piano' or even 'Rural Folk Piano.' Indeed, his music recalls the wide, open spaces of the American heartland with a warm, distinctive sound. Yet Winston spent much energy studying New Orleans stride masters and his influences ranged from Ray Manzarek (of The Doors) to Jimmy Smith to Professor Longhair and Fats Waller. On tour, Winston often encouraged fans to bring food donations to his concerts and was a prominent fundraiser for Feeding America.”

11: Wall Matthews // Spine River
Tumblr media
Spine River: The Guitar Music of Wall Matthews, 1967—1981 Wall Matthews 2021, Tompkins Square (Bandcamp) Every collection should have a few pensive instrumental acoustic guitar records, since the life of anyone who spends hundreds or thousands of dollars on a pointedly outmoded format is bound to be one touched by a frequent need to have a lie-down in the dark. If it should cross your path, Spine River: The Guitar Music of Wall Matthews, 1967—1981 is a fine specimen of its kind.
youtube
Matthews is principally known as the guitarist of The Entourage Music and Theater Ensemble, a mid-‘70s acoustic avant-garde group whose compositions for modern dance performances have enjoyed a revival in recent years. While the earliest numbers here, recorded when Matthews was a teenager, are fingerpicked country folk in the Leo Kottke mould, his style changes dramatically after joining the Entourage in 1974. Though the previously unreleased 1978 home demos that constitute the bulk of this release are solo recordings, the “E Minor Suite” and “The Doves of Venus” gesture towards chamber ballet; I can readily imagine the increasingly-gnarled “Wendy’s Piece” soundtracking a single dancer’s descent into frenzy.
The LP wraps with a few selections from his first solo album, 1981’s The Dance in Your Eye, which in their faint jazziness and dewy melodies could be at home on one of the better Windham Hill releases of the era. Ultimately, the evolution of the guitarist through this period is organic enough that Spine River hangs together well as a collection, and showcases Matthews’ deftness and imagination as a player and composer.

Marc Emory ::  Listening Music / Anfang
Ready to slide into autumn? If so, this should help: Marc Emory’s Listening Music / Anfang. Originally self-released in 1974, and resurrected last month via Scissor Tail Records, the mostly instrumental affair finds Emory handling all the guitars/vox. An obvious grip for devotees of William Ackerman’s Windham Hill and the greater Takoma family, the reissue is being limited to 200 copies in keeping with the spirit of the amount pressed for the original ’74 release. The skilled 12-string fingerpicking is perhaps the main draw, but don’t skip the vocal numbers, with Emory finding a fully-hazed If I Could Only Remember My Name / Gary Higgins sweet spot.

So I just noticed on the National Weather Service forecast page for a location, if you scroll below the seven day forecast, there's a section called Additional Forecasts and Information, which included a link labeled Forecast Discussion. Clicking that takes you to a local meteorologist rambling about their reasons for making the forecasts that appear on the site. The current ramble for our area includes ruminations like
Ingredients will begin to come together by afternoon for a severe weather event
The entire gauntlet of damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes will all be in play, here
Moving on, lets now address the high wind warning threat. In my 21 years as a forecaster here in Nashville, I do not recall a gradient wind event like this one.
I don't know who else is old enough to remember when The Weather Channel would display local forecasts as all-caps white text on bright blue backgrounds, while the New Age Adult Contemporary music of the record label Windham Hill played

Those local forecasts were sourced from the NWS, and every once in a while would have weird little turns of phrase like that, so I just...think it's meteorologist humor

Seawind of Battery - Clockwatching
It's Independence Day — but Bandcamp Monday never rests! Seawind of Battery's debut Clockwatching is a beauteous collection of guitar reveries from NYC's Mike Horn, the first offering from the just-launched Island House Recordings. A great start for all involved. Horn works in a variety of styles, from crisp Windham Hill-ish flights of fancy to spacious and reverberant Lanois zones. It all hangs together nicely, thanks to a generally dreamlike atmosphere. One tune here is called "Summer Hymns" and that sums up the vibe perfectly, an ideal soundtrack for those long July sunsets.
