Wayne Vs Fenton 3

start of the madness

pls note I'm putting these numbers in as "what I have written." They're not gonna necessarily be in order. I hope to make a full fic to put on AO3. In the interim, here's stuff I wrote in general as it strikes me in the moment. This bit is from Tim's perspective after Damian and Danny Are Friends become a known quantity in the Wayne household. ~*~

Damian making friends didn’t make sense. Everyone else felt complacent in simply accepting it. Tim wasn’t. Considering his upbringing, autonomous socializing wasn’t part of Damian’s personality. Nor was how calm and patient the former assassin child became with all of his siblings, Tim included. Damian himself insisted he and this “Danny” were friends. Hell, Damian even called the kid by a nickname. Not his last name, not “Daniel.” His actual, preferred nickname. Tim was suspicious and instantly began investigating. Daniel “Danny” Fenton, age 15, moved to Gotham two months ago from Amity Park, Illinois with his godfather and temporary guardian, Vlad Masters, former mayor of Amity Park, head of Vladco Industries, and heir to Wisconsin’s Self Proclaimed Dairy King’s fortune. Child of Jack and Madeline Fenton, doctors of something called ectobiology, former college classmates of Vlad Masters, and founders of FentonWorks, a cottage research facility that developed antighost (Ghosts? Really?) weaponry and equipment. Brother of Jasmine Fenton, currently a student of Yale in their psychology undergraduate program, and already a shoe-in for the Dean’s list. Honestly, of all the people related to him, Danny ended up being the least interesting. Middling grades that dropped in high school along with attendance. That was probably what led to his coming to Gotham. A set of brilliant - if evidentially weird - parents and a rich and involved godfather doing what they could to help their faltering son to succeed by sending him to one of the top schools on the east coast. There was evidence that Amity Park itself had some apparently minor meta vigilante protecting it, but searches for “Phantom” turned up nothing in the Justice League’s database, suggesting whomever this was might be an actual ghost like Deadman and, thus, restricted to access by those with JLD clearance. Tim put aside that issue for later. He could just ask B for privileges later. Besides, the only information he found on this vigilante was on a few amateur fansites and local papers. No major news sites or government listings. It couldn’t be anything major. His focus remained on Daniel Fenton. Except, even when looking into the kid’s socials, there wasn’t anything interesting. He had a couple friends back in Amity, the most interesting of the two was Samantha Mason of the Mason family, though Tim already knew of her from various socialite dinners she looked ready to burn to the ground, pink and lacey dress or not. Her social media was full of activism, conservation movements, and calls for both veganism and something called ultra recycle vegetarianism. Tucker came from an average family of upper middle class parents, nothing odd there, though his social media showed his love of technology and ancient Egypt. Nothing strange there. Danny’s social media, besides his friends, included links to Nasa, occasional rambles about high school life, and, for some reason, a dog photoshopped to look green. From the replies of his few followers, it was an inside joke since they all cooed over the dog and didn’t comment on the green. Again, nothing strange. Even the one time he managed to hack into Damian’s phone to see his messages yielded nothing. He and Danny would meet for what Danny called “playdates.” For some reason, Damian played along with a name Tim knew he’d scoff as childish and beneath him. Even that would be innocuous. One or the other would suggest meeting at various parks, arcades, even the observatory, negotiating dates and times, and that was it.

Danny was a normal kid. Damian was a born and bred assassin. Why in the actual fuck were these two friends? Nothing made sense. Everyone else was happy to ignore it because of the peace the irrationality before them instilled. Tim wouldn’t become complacent. Whatever Danny was hiding, he’d find it.

Interesting to me is when human characters going up against a more powerful being (alien, divine, transformed human, etc) they use the phrase "we're like ants/flies/mice to them", not only to convey their comparative lack of power, but also to convey the disregard the being has for humans. Because it implies that the human norm is to disregard these creatures, or even dislike them, and doesn't really reflect on what that may imply about human cultures where that sentiment is indeed common.

It reminds me about how I was talking to someone at work and mentioned how much the bugs bother me at work because they get on my papers, and I have to smack my clipboard to get them off without squishing them. He immediately said something like "why? Squish them, they're annoying". It baffled me for a second, so I just told him I don't like to have stains on my papers, since that seemed like a reason he'd understand- but really, when I accidentally squish bugs while brushing them off, I feel bad. They aren't hurting me. They don't even comprehend that they're annoying or why.

It kinda rubbed me the wrong way that the show gave Percy 4 pearls as a false shred of hope, meaning something has to happen to one for him to leave the underworld without Sally, and of all the interesting narrative opportunities they had to do something with that (Annabeth/grover traitor fakeout, broken tragically but unavoidably, taken by Hades when Percy holds one up, etc) they chose to have Grover lose it by accident.

Logically, I too would lose whatever little ball I had in my pocket if I got swallowed alive by a three headed dog. But I can see the hand of the author, and a choice was made to have Grover “whoopsie” an extremely important plot device. Idk, my first reaction is that I don’t like it.

I suddenly remembered this post and realized that I now had the means to investigate and try to solve this mystery.

Spoilers: I haven’t solved it… but I do have an evidence-based hypothesis!

(This post is based on my own observations and deductions. I know a few things about the game’s files because I’ve explored them, but I’m still 100% self-taught and learned “on the job”. I don’t know everything, so feel free to correct me or provide more information!)

So this is what @danaduchy found (and thank you for originally sharing this); I added colors and line breaks for more clarity:

This can be found in a document filled with lines of code regarding the game’s audio files, such as music, voice lines, and sound effects. It seems that its purpose is basically to “tell” each file how, when, and in what context it’s supposed to play in the game. So “John_Seed_Sex_Room” refers to one or several sound files.

Again, I still don’t know what everything you see in the screenshot means, but what I do know is that “MIS” means “mission”, that “KEY01” refers to a character, Nick Rye, and that “010” is basically the mission number. Here, I know that “MIS_KEY01_010” is the mission Wingman.

I assume “LP_Filter” means “low-pass filter”. In short, it’s an audio filter that removes high frequencies. You can use it, for example, if you want your audio to sound muffled like it’s coming from behind a closed door (and I’ve chosen this particular example for a good reason).

I assume the MaxRadius is the maximum distance (from its source in the game) at which a sound can be heard, and the Duration is simply the duration of the sound in seconds. Because they’re both equal to 0 and we have the words “Start” and “Stop”, I’d say the purpose of these two lines of code is simply to “tell” the audio “John_Seed_Sex_Room” to start and stop playing, or possibly to activate and deactivate the low-pass filter.

Those lines didn’t give me the actual sound file(s), so I continued to investigate and found this:

I suppose “Play_SFX” simply means “play sound effect”, and this time, these lines can actually help me find the corresponding audio files!

I was able to find and listen to “Door_Key_Pickup”, “LockedDoor_Rnd”, and “UnlockDoor_01”. They unsurprisingly and respectively are the sound of keys being picked up, someone trying to open a locked door (five different versions), and the door being unlocked. Unfortunately, “Door_Push” and “JohnSeed_SexRoom_Rnd” don’t seem to exist anymore...

As you can see, the Duration of “JohnSeed_SexRoom_Rnd” isn’t specified, but not all the files listed in the document have one, so this isn’t that strange. The MaxRadius is higher than the other sounds’ featured here, so I assume it was supposed to be heard from a longer distance. I’m not sure what Rnd means, but I think it could be the abbreviation of “round” or “rounded”. Maybe it’s the normal, unaltered version of the sound “JohnSeed_SexRoom”, unlike “JohnSeed_Sex_Room_LP_Filter” which has a low-pass filter.

The code also says this sound is from a “Scripted_Sequence” in a “Specific” context: one of the “Missions” in Holland Valley (this is what “John_Seed” means here) in relation to Nick Rye (KEY01). We already know this mission is Wingman (MIS_KEY01_010), but what we learn here is that, whatever the “sex room” thing is, it was apparently specific to this mission.

The last mention of it in the document was this:

“Stop_SFX” suggests that these lines probably exist to make the two sound effects stop playing.

So, what is “John_Seed_Sex_Room”? It seems it was an audio file (one or several sound effects) and supposed to be part of one specific mission: Wingman. There were two versions and at least one of them had a low-pass filter. In the same sequence, a locked door was apparently going to be unlocked and opened.

The objective of the mission Wingman is to go to Seed Ranch and retrieve Nick’s plane. So what if, in this mission, players were originally going to explore more rooms in the ranch… and find whatever the “sex room” was? To me, it looks like we were going to hear muffled sounds coming from a room, unlock the door, and see what and/or who was inside.

Now, I don’t think it was necessarily going to be a literal “sex room”. According to (probably deleted) NPC dialog, in an early version of the game, people were taken to John’s ranch instead of his bunker to be tortured. It’s possible that the term “sex room” was a joke name given by the devs to refer to a torture room.

In conclusion, according to my (limited) knowledge and after my investigation, I believe the “sex room” was a special room in Seed Ranch, either literally used for sex (the cult’s rules could have been different at the time) or for torture. Evidence suggests it could be found during the mission Wingman only and that there were sounds coming from behind its locked door. It seems players could unlock it with a key and, I assume, see whatever was going on inside.

That’s all I know… But if you have another hypothesis or more information about that mysterious room, don’t hesitate to share it! :)

Releasing shame, relearning softness

“Listen to this! A farmer went out to scatter seed. As he was scattering seed, some fell on the path; and the birds came and ate it. …The farmer scatters the Word. This is the meaning of the seed that fell on the path: When the Word is scattered and people hear it, right away Satan comes and steals the Word that was planted in them.” - Mark 4:3-4, 14-15

As we explored yesterday, the farmer in the “parable of the sower" sows extravagantly, optimistically, letting seeds fall on all sorts of ground.

I only have time to explore the first kind of ground today; you’ll have to read the whole text with friends to puzzle out the rest (just as parables intend for us to do!).

The seed that falls on the path gets eaten by birds; “Satan” swoops in to steal the Word away.

Is it our fault when this happens? I say no. We are not to blame when others trample our spirits flat, pack our hearts into hard, desolate spaces, exposed and vulnerable to attack.

Maybe someone we trusted, or whole unjust systems, convinced us we are unlovable. Maybe some human iteration of Church wounded us so deeply that God’s Word no longer sounds like liberation to us, but prison, poison, hate.

Beloved, it is not your fault. And this is not the end of your story. God will keep lavishing love upon you, until you feel safe enough to soften. And then, what beautiful fruit!
