Fifth entry of my “Dunmeshi rarepairs I will birth with my own hands if I have to” series. This one’s straight up embarrassing, like of course the shadow version of Chilchuck and Marcille would get me.

It suddenly grabbed me out of nowhere. What got me thinking about it is this exchange, first comic third panel, because like… Woah. He knows she has a thing for Kabru? Or something. And he has NO FEAR. Like it’s so forward and has 0 pretenses lmao. And then I thought… And oh no. Oh no.

Very uptight and strict and rules-following and too self-aggrandizing tbh x will not hesitate to insult you to your face and sleazy and free spirit…. Kuro is involved in an ot3 of sorts in my head and basically they drag her into Situations of various moral standing aka scams or idk going to a club god forbid. I think she needs to relax and get taken down 1 peg maybe, and I think he needs like…….. Someone to teach him what is unhealthy lmao, also remind him to get work benefits, and if they can like get to feel safe and comfy with one another (and god just the road there would be a beautiful trainwreck to watch) they would be gossip besties worsties.

I never expected it ok I read this extra expecting nothing and god knows why I saw him be like "hey u like Kabru right. You’re his babysitter right. Which poor sap is being Kabru’s maid" with 0 fear and her being so casually pissed back at him and idk, how they’re so comfy being not polite with one another but they’re still coworkers-friends despite it… Crazy for how prickly they both are that they manage that much. They bicker and see each other as annoying at best but weirdly dependable and friends despite it all and……….. I am going to grow them in a lab and observe how I can make it work

MICKBELL IS A REBOUND MORE AT 9??? Maybe Rin and Mickbell have a one night stand and then the aftermath dynamic is this….. She probably regrets it. And then it gets more complex and grows into something odd as she becomes hyperaware of him and they have this little complicity thing going on….

I think cuddling with Kuro (who would be more like a platonic protective & soothing presence in his and Rin’s relationship rather than romo) would destress her actually I think she needs and deserves it. Go to a dog cafe bbygirl it’ll fix you. So what I’m saying is the three of them watch a movie and Rin and Mickbell are sitting on Kuro’s laps and everyone is so comfy. Kuro’s legs die halfway through but he’s self-sacrificing it’s fine….. Actually Mick is on his laps Rin’s just nuzzled into his side. There, fixed. I am so weirdly invested in them… They’re funky to think about. Rin seeing Mickbell and Kuro like "you guys are aware that what you two have is fucked up right" and then joining them in the messy dynamic 🤝  Put them in situations. That will be all.

She is trying so hard to be the main character by lying and manipulating her sister, her cavalier, her mentor, her ?love interests? (Spoiler???) And also god. Not sure how it's working out for her but she does love to lie and manipulate

Worstie Ianthe is the DEFINITION of gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss. She is one of a set of necromancer twins that are the heirs to their houses rule. Except wait, only she is a necromancer and she has spent their entire lives doing necromancy for the both of them. She is constantly mean to their cavalier, Naberius, who she occasionally nibbles on like a chew toy, before eventually killing and eating him to ascend to sainthood. She goes to gods spaceship with another woman who ascended to sainthood who she has a crush on, this other woman is like…. Both incredibly mentally unwell and also haunted by at least 211 ghosts. Ianthes method of flirting with her? Gaslighting her about the corpse that keeps moving around and hiding under her bed. For no real reason tbh. She is clearly plotting to overthrow god, and at the moment that consists of her manipulating him while he’s too sad about his long term partners betraying him and subsequently exploding to really care. She dresses in terrible outfits and makes soup by burning onions to the bottom of a pot, putting meat in and some vegetables and then it doesn’t taste like anything so she puts in a few teaspoons of salt so it tastes like a few teaspoons of salt. She had her crush amputate her arm and regrow her a new one out of bone and it’s one of the horniest things I’ve read in my life.

"Gaslight = told her lobotomized (she helped), schizophrenic girlobsession that there was no corpse under their bed, even tho there totally was. Gatekeep = girl did NOT share the secret to god-like ascension. She kept that shit to herself until it was time to eat her boytoy, and by then everyone knew already. Girlboss = she has a non-necromancer twin sister, and literally Everyone thinks they r both necromancers because Ianthe is so good at it. She reverse engineered ascending to the aforementioned ascension without even completing any of the supplementary tasks. She held her own in a fight against a 10k year old lyctor. She uses a man as a chewtoy in the first book, literally gaslights the protagonist of the second book about a corpse, and elder-abuses God when he gets depressed in the third book. Nobody is doing it like her.

Dives headfirst with no regrets while basically laughing and covered in blood into murdering her cavalier once she realizes what the gothic locked room mystery/competition leads to while everyone else is questioning it, helps perform lobotomy on harrow so she doesn't remember the person she loves, manipulates everyone to get to the top

her relationship with her sister is incredibly Bad, she fosters codependency and views Corona(the sister) as an extension of herself. This does not stop her from keeping up the con that Corona actually has magic (She doesn't, it was always just Ianthe) for 22ish years and every single person who interacts with them falls for it. She killed a man against his will (most dying for this purpose specifically go willingly) and she consumed him and she will be burning his soul for eternity. She's completely repulsive and still somehow incredibly hot.

she takes advantage of the fact that the main character is prone to hallucinations. at one point she gaslights the mc into believing that the corpse under her bed isn't real just because she can. she reverse engineered a set of very complex trials on her own without anyone realizing she had the skills to complete them normally. she's also babysat god through his drunk and pathetic era.

I have so much I could say about how Izzy and Blackbeard's relationship has deteriorated hhhhh,,,, Izzy is a problem child but I'm so glad the story is crashing towards his character actually growing and changing. In season 1 he at least got the crumbs Ed would throw him like "I need you here", now he's only getting abuse and maybe he's throwing himself at it because he recognises he had a part to play in reaching this point and believes he deserves it.

Fang's delivery on "how you doing Izzy" will keep me warm and fed all winter. Masterclass in approaching someone, truly tender and genuine but not too pressuring. God.

That second "unhand me" hhh the panic of realising you're going to start crying if the situation continues

Ooh, a bit of an opposite question, do you have a favorite rivalry from each season?

That is a good question! I had to think a bit in a few of these and alot of seasons didn't have just one rivalry I enjoyed, but multiple!

TDI

I think Heather vs Gwen is a classic and a staple of Island. Constant opposing forces and a big part of what was supposed to be Gwen's character development. It makes them bonding a bit at the last episode rather sweet too.

TDA

Both Lindsay and later Beth vs Courtney were a treat. Courtney's straight up jealousy towards Lindsay while she stayed mostly oblivious was funny and Beth identifying when Courtney was trying to manipulate her because she has experience and then deciding to counter manipulate her was a W move. Duncan vs Harold had its moments too, the Kung Fu episode was their best I think.

TDWT

Aleheather sweep! I usually love the trope of "character who was previously the Big Bad becomes an anti hero to defeat the newer and more threatening Big Bad" and Heather's arc does this very well, specially in the final. Seeing them at constant odds and the disadvantage Heather's at makes her win all more satisfying (again her ending is canon to me).

Jo is part of both my favorite rivalries this season, and tbh all of Jo's rivalries are great! My favorites are Jo vs Brick and Jo vs Cameron but Jo vs Anne Maria is great too. For Jo vs Brick the dynamic of two jocks who just absolutely have to one up each other is such a solid base and their interactions justake it all better. I like Jo vs Cameron too because besides the physical comedy of their interactions with Jo being able to just carry and drop or throw him like it's nothing, but also the fact she cares for him in her weird unique Jo way, she tries to train him and congratulates him when he uses her own methods to get rid of her, it's weirdly wholesome :)

I really had to think about this one because all the main rivalries this season included Mal and I wasn't a fan of any of them, and it frankly left me with just Aleheather, which like I do love them, but it's unfortunate I have to repeat a rivalry. Regardless though they were very entertaining the most part (heather hiding the immunity idol was dumb tho) and their bonus clip together was adorable <3

TDPI

Another one I had to think of though not for the same reason, there weren't really many rivalries that stood out to me y'know? Besides the one sided Sugar vs Ella that I found needlessly mean spirited often, there was Dave vs Leonard that didn't last long, the more subtle Sky vs Sugar that you could slowly see seep and finally start making itself apparent around ep 7 onward, and Topher vs Chris, both the two last ones are interesting but I can't say much about them.

Can you expect me to say anything other than Bowie vs Julia? They couldn't stand each other's gut yet kept becoming inseparable so often and that was such a treat to see unfold, they're worsties, they fight each other uh a huge honeybee nest, they have to team up, they betray each other, they have to work together againg but just screw each other over, it's wonderful I love it

1. The Copper Gauntlet

Oh goddess... The suspense. Call's emotional state. The interactions. The plot. The secret. The magic that we are already familiar with. The road. The walking dead that listen to little boy's command. The grave. The corpses. The mystery. The scene where Call gains this powers. The truth open to his besties and worstie. The head on the Assembly's table. All together they make the purrfect book i can't

2. The Silver Mask

Plot is not so great and we know why. But i love the atmosphere, imo it's on its peak here. We finally get as close as we can to the Enemy of Death, to his family and life, it's like we are in his head. This book depicts the state of Constantine's mind, and gives us an answer to the question why he became what he became. Actually really creepy, corpses again oh yeah i love them lol. Jennifer) I'm so normal about her (upd. I forgot that the Jennifer moment happened in the 3 book and not in this so plus one to the BK). And we learnt a secret about chaos ridden and Jericho. It was mesmerizing. Once again, this series brought up the topic of death and soul, it is unique for its genre. I love how Call reaches his own point of no return here. Always nice to see this trope. Also giving up his morals and being left behind by his last alive friends like here get your consciences for being creepy and potentially evil! Lol. Would've been the top-1 if the final "battle" NEVER EVER EXISTED. The only good thing bout it is chaos ridden dance, which is a reference to Call's thought in the 2 book where he imagined if he told his chaos ridden to dance and jump on one feet synchronously. And ofc Call's loss of consciousness. You will always be my favourite.... I love when characters faint lol it's so dramatic idk!!! My blorbos. Also i like calmara moments they're stupid love them

3. The Iron Trial

Nothing tops the Iron Trial (maybe something tops but nvm)

4. The Golden Tower

My fav moment is when Call finds out he is Maugris. Like he must've got used to it already lol. I'm not even sarcastic here when i say i enjoy it, even though it wasn't necessary to the plot. And I like "Aaron in Call's head" gags so much that i even won't put this book on the last place. And calmara. And Alex being the iconic 17 yo super gothic punk villain lol (nope it was awful rrrr)

5. The Bronze Key

Well idk. Many cool moments, many nice interactions. But it's just too plain and so boring. I don't even remember the plot. And Aaron was bullied and then fucking died, didn't enjoy it very much tbh. Call got to jail, lol. Anastasia is creepy and annoying. On the other hand i remember the moment when Call used his magic to stop the fire in the whole room, epic!!! Hehe. upd. And Jennifer) love her

I WAS LITERALLY SAYING THE OTHER DAY TO MY PARTNER THAT I CAN FEEL AN AUTUMN DEATH NOTE REWATCH COMING ON..... maybe maybe maybe

misa is so freaking fascinating to me!! maybe next death note rewatch will be an extra special misa focus edition 🔍 she's just so fucked up in such a fun way that tbh i kind of feel is a missed opportunity, especially in the latter half of the story (the anime at least - haven't read the manga). she's so self-centred and i love that for her. her motivation to be kira pours from her own heart. while light has never personally suffered at the hands of crime afaik, misa very much has - both her family's deaths and her own being attached. her devotion to the cause is not just for the sake of saving the world but for saving herself, back on that night. it's like this vicarious way she can get back at "criminals" because she couldn't prevent her own family dying. it's ground into her!! that is the kind of experience you can't just shake out of her!! you can set misa on any path away from kira and i truly think she would barrel right onto it because the existence of kira gives her those warm and fuzzy feelings of retribution or maybe even safety that just like, filters right into her obsessive love for light

i like that even though she's clearly devoted to light, she's still an independent operator (well as much as the writing allows at certain times. eyeroll). i think light's whole attitude around "managing" her approach to being kira is so fkn illustrative of the derision with which he views a lot of people lol. there's something so interesting about how he views misa as impulsive and emotionally driven, so she's deranged, but obviously he is different even though their core beliefs are the same. like you might be using strategy but your goal is the same. idk

YOTSUBA ARC MISA AND POST TIMESKIP MISA ARE SO SPECIAL TO ME PERSONALLY. yotsuba arc because i'm like. oh my god the fact that she is not given ANY narrative space to either literally or metaphorically beat L's ass is a fucking choice BUT the fact that her dislike of him seems to come out as purely petty spats while he and light are chained together is so fucking funny. hater arc, but also, you could write a 9k character study unpacking all of this. it all kind of loops around to this iron-clad optimism that everything is somehow gonna turn out alright... and at that point in time, she doesn't even know how much shit she's gotten herself into. i do really really love that moment in this arc where misa gets her memories back after visiting the tower (when matsuda falls off a balcony. you know the one) but light doesn't have his and L is not even clued into what's happened. and light so so so wants to catch kira and clear his name and misa's sitting there like :)) like, i know she's gonna conspire to give light his memories back ASAP because that's The Plan but come on that brief glimpse in time is so fun and for misa her access to the death note & shinigami is such an important and consistent bargaining tool in her own survival. it was cool to see her have a monopoly on it, no matter how brief

there's definitely something to say here about her relationship with rem too but honestly i'm gonna have to go back to sources on this one. for me i've always kind of felt some parts of the fandom try to bend rem and misa into the "cute background lesbian couple" template that so many fandoms run on and i'm like. mate. you're not selling me. rem loves misa but misa is just too awful and/or deranged for all of that. i've always kind of felt their relationship was tragic in part because misa didn't fully understand the depth of rem's love for her / took it for granted until rem died. but again, i need to go back to sources

OH and this is getting long but i have the softest spot of all for post-timeskip misa. she is so me and my husband by mitski core. her life is falling to shit around her. her lifespan has been quartered. and she gives up her memories!! her knowledge of the death note has always been her key to survival and light sweet talks her into giving it up and this is the bit where i start hollering and screaming. and from then on, she doesn't even realise how much shit she's in. it's not just that she's in a failing engagement. it's that her fiance has wrung her for everything she had to give and she is being left to the wayside. her suspicion that light is having an affair is almost framed as comical but it's all she fucking has!!! she loves him because it's all she has. she has to choose between light and kira like this is some cosmic fucking joke and she cheers on light apparently trying to catch kira because she loves him. because what else exists in her memory from the last five years of her life???? FUCK

post-timeskip misa is genuinely fucking tragic to me because like. through the sheer power of sweet talking light manages to entirely defang her. she's lost rem. she has a book, she has the eyes, but she uses them solely under light's discretion. and then she gives up her memories because light asks. and like she is 100% a terrible person with the whole mass murdering thing but that kind of adds to it in a way. you get me

Honestly, I'm haunted by MANYYYY wips. But currently my sashnetra reunion au, this is sort of a childhood acquaintances/friends to lovers??

Sasha and Anetra grew up in Hawaii [decided on Hawaii with my worstie, @dawningofdrag , since Sasha is from there and Neech has ties there too on his dads side] and it's not that they were super close or best friends growing up, but they did attend the same schools together. By high school when Sasha was figuring herself out and expressing herself more, Anetra was one of the people who'd step in whenever he'd see that the other students were being douchebags to her (and he's one of the first people to see her as the girl she's always been tbh)

They had this sort of.. kinda-unspoken friendship of sorts? Anetra's always been the quiet guy, focused on his studies and taekwondo (& soccer) and Sasha had her own group of friends. After graduating high school they end up spending that summer before college together and sharing their first kiss 😌 but they share it on the last night Sasha is there before she's off to Florida 🥴 Anyways, they lose contact throughout time but reunite at their high school 10 yr reunion. Sasha kept going back and forth on whether or not she wanted to attend but ultimately decides to go in hopes of seeing him there and that's where the fic is supposed to start!!

Random hc: I love klavier sm I feel like ive seen every post abt him and don’t have any original thoughts that haven’t been said before but, I hc him as having OCD. This is mostly just based off of our interactions with him during Guitar's Serenade.

Also, I’m aware this is an unpopular opinion but I don’t think he had a crush on Apollo when he first met him! Like I do find that trope fun and silly, but looking at his character Klavier would never fall for someone at first sight, and definitely not someone he’s as suspicious about as Apollo [he accused his brother of Murder]. Klavier is SO So meticulous and need to have all the facts figured out beforehand. I truly believe he needs something to be loud and messy and BAD at to vent with because he tries SO hard to keep everything under wraps at all times. Get the man a buncha brightly colored paints he can go ham w!!! Let him blast music in his lonely studio apartment and head bang and belt songs and dance badly where no one can see!!! Let him learn to take up space authentically in his own damn house!!

General opinion overall: He is SO charismatic and blorbo-able! He seems carefree but is Not in any sense of the word. He makes you think he wears his heart on his sleeve but it is hidden under SO many layers, getting him to trust you is going to be SO much work. He puts EVERYTHING he’s got into his passions and by god he’s gotta make sure he’s got everything Just Right. He’s such a layered character and its hard to pick out his thoughts, also they created a character who is just SO interesting when you pair him with literally any character. Like he and apollo are such opposites how would they function together? What the hell was the Gavin brother’s relationship Actually like? I think abt this all the time. Also like, him and Wright actually became more similar characters due to his disbarment, but also That past affects his relationship with Ema too! Also how the hell did he cope (did he cope???) with the personal betrayals he suffered in AJ?? Also what’s his relationship with the other prosecutors in the office???? Does he have offscreen friends or did he really lose everyone? I am unable to be succinct over Klavier but it boils down to:

Joker, Dagger, Beast, Doll, Jumbo, and Peter and Wendy are all fun though and I do like that they cause problems and kill people. Unfortunately Sebastian and Ciel were just better at causing problems and killing people. Rip the most to Doll though, you were the best

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Alois. I don't really love his ending in season 2 - he, Hannah, Claude and the triplets all merge into one consciousness or something?? It's stupid and I hate that Claude is included in anything. I think Alois should have also been able to become a demon with Ciel if they wanted to go that route, or simply have him not die and get therapy but still continue being evil if he wants he's allowed

Favourite Friendship: I really like the friendship between Bard, Finny, and Mey-Rin! They all bonded and are all soo stupid together they're great. Also adding Snake to their mix is fun, even though everyone is lying to him,,, oops 😬

Character I most identify with: Lizzie I think! She's sweet and badass and wants what's best for Ciel, even if she doesn't completely understand what's going on or how he changed from what she remembered as a child. I love that she's super good at sword fighting, and I want to be that good as well!! Next step is sword fighting classes lmao

Character I wish I could be: I love most of the characters but honestly I don't want to be any of them lmaoo; they're all suffering or in danger in various ways and I just want everyone to feel better and so would not like to be in that situation <3

When I started shipping them: Season 1 episode 1 tbh. They have great chemistry and bother each other a lot but also genuinely care about each other which is so important!

My thoughts: Oooh you are not ready for my thoughts on them. Just got done doing a rewatch of Merlin BBC with my bestie and we suffered and exalted together

What makes me happy about them: The way they are willing to sacrifice themselves for each other! Merlin drinks poison for Arthur and Arthur ignores his father and places himself in danger to save Merlin's life, who his father dismisses as a mere serving boy and Arthur's like he's more than that!! to me!! and I just

What makes me sad about them: Girl the everrrryything 😭 the tragedy of Merlin doing all he can to prevent Arthur's death at Camlann but all he does just makes it happen. The tragedy of Merlin becoming so jaded over the course of the show, with how trusting and happy he was in season 1 and how unwilling he was to trust or give Mordred a fair chance in season 5 - especially when it came to the girl Mordred loved. The fact that Arthur never found out about Merlin's magic until it's too late!! That Merlin spends the whole show worried Arthur will hate him when he finds out, and does his best to ensure magic won't return to Camelot and advises Arthur not to trust magic,,,, ough agggh the agonies!!

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: no magic AU or modern AU. Yeah I know the show ends showing Merlin still around in modern day waiting for Arthur, but I don't care! I want them to be around in Arthurian times and causing and solving problems. Throw in angst as needed, but don't put them in a place without magic or in modern day. I also tend to avoid major character death - I'm usually not opposed to it if done right since angst is a good time, but since it happened irl in the show I can't handle it in fic

Things I look for in fanfic: I never say no to a good magic reveal fic!! Especially if it takes a minute for Arthur to forgive Merlin for not saying anything and he's mean about it and makes Merlin feels bad and then feels bad later when he gets over it and Merlin is sad and they work on themselves together. Hurt/comfort type stuff!

My wishlist: That Merlin's magic gets revealed to Arthur sooner than canon and that Arthur comes to terms with it and magic is accepted in Camelot, that Merlin dates Arthur and Arthur dates Gwen and Gwen dates Morgana <3 Also that Uther dies choking on his own blood. Not related to Merthur but also still related to them cause his Huge Bitch disease prevented them from being happy

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Merlin with Gwaine and Arthur with Gwen! Gwaine and Merlin are so sweet actually, and we see how good Arthur and Gwen are in canon

My happily ever after for them: Merlin is court sorcerer/magical advisor to Arthur, also maybe his royal boyfriend, and they rule Camelot in peace and happiness. Morgana is happy with Gwen and Mordred is vibing somewhere to, maybe with his gf if we want to continue pretending he's straight

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I would have loved to get more backstory on Jonah Magnus, or somehow hear statements from the people he hung out with in ye olden times in their own voices! It would also have been neat to hear his own thoughts/feelings on living through a ton of shit - invention of electricity, the car, the airplane, the internet! I would love to hear if he thinks everything is cool and better now or if he's a crotchety old bitch about it and is like "back in my day 😤"

Favorite friendship for this character: Lmao he doesn't have friends!! Best I can do is his friendships in the 1800s where he was prob just using everyone so he could open his funny little eye temple <3 but I will say I liked the statement from him about Barnabas Bennett , so I'll say I liked their 'friendship' 😏

well, that last one was longer than expected! luckily, otterverse s3 is a lot shorter.

it's been two years since the apocalypse, i believe. we open on a lone, cloaked wanderer (named echo, played by @leonardoturtle), roaming the wastes (cloaks have become the height of fashion bc the initial survivors all loved apocalypse/punk aesthetic and took their chance when they saw it). shenanigans that i mostly don't remember and aren't really important ensue.

the major players here are echo, c!felix, daisy (the former wendy's employee, played by me), harbinger, a few others i believe, and three of wali @wallace-marte's characters. that's right, three. Marri (he/they), c!wallace (also known as divorce anon, he/they/it), and carmin (former wendy's employee, he/him). as far as i can remember, echo, felix, harbinger, and the wendy's employees (+ some other anons who i dont remember) face off against a tbh beast, and then go to a taco bell. while in the taco bell, the group runs into marri and wallace, who have been hunting each other and carmin down, and are pretty murderous about it. they have a tense standoff, and vaguely taunt each other the whole time.

the standoff, like most things, can't last forever. marri and wallace attack, and carmin gets hit in the crossfire. daisy takes him and the Random Mystery Kid (also played by wallace) and exits, stage left. tragic gay shenanigans happen, and the otterverse ends, for good this time.

SPINOFFS:

the afterlife worsties adventures. you see, after c!wisp and c!gumy died, their stories didn't end there. their mutual kill (as in. c!gumy killed both of them but it couldn't and wouldn't have happened if c!wisp hadnt started the apocalypse) landed them in a shared afterlife, where they are the only people there. (just the two of them, they can make it if they try!) the very elements force them closer together, and they can't even work together long enough to escape and go their separate ways. STATUS: INCOMPLETE

The Otterverse Spinoff: an alternate version of c!felix who never met c!pact and Hands (a new guy, played by wali) explore more of the post-apocalypse world, with the definitely-not-suspicious-at-all c!shark (played by me!) as their guide. STATUS: INCOMPLETE, UNLIKELY TO CONTINUE
