Okay guys, I'm calling it now, Wrackingspelt is in fact Hob's pet he had to leave at the goblin court, and when he writes "I wish you could read..." in the letter in ep3, it literally means the ability to read. Brennan just knows how the people would react and jump into conclusions when he stopped at that precise moment so he's letting us create nonexisting drama ourselves. All the theories of kid/dead friend/lover are great but when I saw Aabria's face when Wrackingspelt was mentioned it wasn't a "oh poor baby" but rather "you son of a bitch, I can't believe you're doing it"

When Rue first found out about the goblet/bugglebear/feychild, I imagine that they were pretty anxious, regarding how to tell Hob, and worrying over conflicts between courts. So, they do what Hob does: confide in the most faithful of steeds. (Who will later spill the tea to his BFF Mucky.)

[Description: an inked comic sketch

Panel 1: Rue anxiously wrings their paws in front of a fenced pen, where Wrackingspelt the war horse calmly watches them pace back and forth. There is no text, but Rue seems to be talking at length about the discovery of the new baby and its upcoming arrival, how to break the news to Hob, and worrying about conflicts from other courts.

Panel 2: With a sigh, Wrackingspelt plunks his head on top of Rue's, effectively stopping their snowballing anxiety. Rue freezes, looking surprised. The thought bubbles evaporate in a puff of smoke.

Panel 3: Now calm, Rue nuzzles Wrackingspelt's face.

Panel 4: Rue walks away offscreen, presumably to go tell Hob the good news, and Wrackingspelt watches them go.

theres something so fascinating to me about wrackingspelt being knickolas pnackolas hob's horse. I'm trying to wrap my head around the delight and yet heartbreak that this gives me. On the one hand, I'm glad that hob doesnt have a long dead friend or compatriot that he writes to on occasion to bring up to date on the happenings that they will necessarily miss as hob lives his life (I know that isnt the only theory, but it was the one I immediately latched onto). I was already incredibly sad just at the possibility that hob lost a close friend or some vein of partner. On the other, it speaks to an even more intense loneliness that hob's confidant is his horse, because this means that, unlike the other possibilities, he has never really had someone to turn to as an equal before.

The yearning that colors hob's words when he writes to wrackingspelt speaks now to a desire for simpler and more straightforward times, ones where hob was left to his own devices with only wrackingspelt and those under his command for company as he carries out battles and other sorts of maneuvers away from the grips of the goblin courts eyes and ears, let alone that of all the other courts combined. It makes sense that he would desire straightforwardness where you do not have to worry about where you stand, because your horse is a dedicated companion as much to you as you are to them
