Gosh there's just. So much. I'm actually drafting this devlog a few days early so that I'm not suddenly overwhelmed on devlog Tuesday again. But without further ado-

This is the big cheese right here -- each character has their own layer, each character's clothes and expressions have their own layers, and there's a separate layer for the soft orange lighting on top of it all. 😭

On that note, here's most of the individual image files that create the CG with their powers (and my code) combined:

And since this is a cropped version of a BIGGER CG (featuring ALL the love interests sitting together), I had to tinker with the position code a great deal to properly feature these three goons Of course it was worth it of course twas merely at the cost of all my energy and sanity at the prospect of eventually possibly also adding in blinks and expression changes--

Tadah... a brand new click-to-continue icon animation! I made (mostly) all by myself! The lil sparkle burst is free from production crate, but I drew the star and added the rotation code... ... Honestly, the hardest and most time-consuming part of this was finalizing the design. Originally I was gonna make it rotate 45 degrees, flip, rotate 45 more degrees, flip, etc-- and messed with that concept for several hours before scrapping it for a simpler, more graceful idea. :| Part of the process, I gots to tell myself, part of the process...

Next up is Jade's powers, as you may have seen in the preview last week. Much like the CTC animation, I did a lot of research on other ideas - various glowing VFX like vertical veins across the cheeks and smoky rising from the eyes, as well as a bigger low opacity character zoom effect - before settling on something simple. Jade's power usage here is... pretty mild in context, and I figure I can always store the more dramatic animations for later in the story.

Do I have more to update with? Believe it or not, yes.

I made some icons, which took a fair amount of trial and error: on the left you'll see an earlier draft, on the right are my more final redesigns from the same day(...night. midnight. I worked on these until midnight).

I had to look up some guidelines because most of my previous icons did NOT look good or legible when sized down to 50x50 pixels. What I learned was, tadah, I had to draw with an unprecedented line width of 200 pixels! (For non-artists: I typically draw with a pen width of 12 pixels at most).

I also studied the icon styles of Persona 5, which saved me a lot of time - they had a cool stylistic choice of diagonally tilted color blocks and thick black outlines.

Oh and the "How to play" page is brand new. I coded it from scratch... That also took all night...

The text, though, can be updated in code!!!! I spliced the phone into layers, with the screen on top and code-generated text just below it, so I can update the caller ID at any point in-game without making any new images.

Took a little while to get it to work... honestly it doesn't look 100% centered... but it's fine. This is fine...

And then... more code. After much tears, blood and strife, I got a musical crossfade to work. It shouldn't have been challenging but it was a nightmare -- when calling the crossfade the second track would either not play at all or its volume wouldn't change and I was starting to develop a preference for eating gravel. But I persisted, found a much simpler code that actually works. After the tearsbloodstrife.

And...... lastly... I simplified this big block of code:

Regarding your Plex server, do you have any tips for compressing media to save space?

Right now, almost all 1080p content is encoded in the H.264 codec. So my biggest tip would be to convert all of your H.264 content to a newer codec called H.265 10-bit.

First, you'll want to make sure that all of the devices you play media on can handle the H.265 10-bit codec. Pretty much any device that says it can do 4K HDR will suffice. It's okay if you have a device that can't do this, as Plex can transcode your media as you watch it, but you are going to use up a lot of computer resources and it can also be slow and buggy.

So to get the best experience, I would definitely recommend upgrading anything that cannot do H.265 10-bit. Thankfully, even the cheapest $30 4K Fire TV Stick is capable.

H.265 allows you to heavily compress your media and maintain quality. The 10-bit color, even if the original file was 8-bit, can reduce color banding in gradients which can often be a consequence of compressing video.

The rule of thumb is you can reduce the file size by 50% of H.264 and not take a hit on image quality. But you can actually go beyond that and still get acceptable quality.

Yes, H.264 will play on pretty much any device these days, but eventually that will be true of H.265. So if saving space is more important than dealing with a few compatibility issues that may crop up (and are usually solvable), then you can definitely shrink the size of your media library while maintaining image quality.

The bad news is that converting your media, depending on how much you have, could take a while. Even with a super beefy computer, compressing in H.265 is a slow process. And you can't use hardware encoding because that is meant more for streaming than media preservation.

Also, I do not recommend compressing 4K content at this time. Only 1080p. Re-encoding and compressing a 4K file takes more time than it is worth. A 4K movie could take 12 to 24 hours even on a very fast computer. Though if you have a 4K file and you don't care if it is 1080p, that might be worth it.

Handbrake is pretty much the only game in town as far as re-encoding your media. It can have a learning curve if you want to use it to its full potential, but there are a ton of decent presets you can use if you don't have the time to learn the fine details of what everything does.

I can give you some recommendations for a few important settings.

In the video tab...

I'd start by finding a preset that is close to your end goal. In this case I chose the H.265 MKV 1080p30 preset in the "Matroska" presets that I will slightly tweak.

I usually want to make MKV files because they can hold subtitles in the file container without a separate subtitle file. I want H.265 10-bit. Most of my content is 1080p. And most of it is 24fps, so I'll just ignore the 30 frames the preset uses and change it later.

So once you select the preset, change framerate to "same as source" to just carry over whatever it was originally. You do not want to monkey with the framerate unless you have a really good reason.

You'll want "constant quality" selected. And then the RF or "rate factor" is basically how much compression you want to use. A lower number is less compression and a higher number is more compression. Once you have experience using Handbrake you'll be able to make a pretty good guess at what RF you should use, depending on the content. But I can give you some basic guidelines for you to test out.

When picking an RF, a higher number will give you a smaller file and a lower number will reduce the chances of creating unwanted compression artifacts. Since you are doing 10-bit, that will help a lot with color banding, but if you overcompress you may get unsightly blocks, especially in dark and fast moving scenes. If you watch dark content on YouTube, you probably know what I mean.

So before I compress media, I ask myself a few questions...

How important is this content to me?

Is good image quality what makes this content special?

Does this content have a lot of dark or fast moving scenes?

If this is my favorite show or movie, then I am going to want to preserve it at the highest possible quality. Or if the content is a visual spectacle, like Avatar, then I am going to want to make sure I preserve visual fidelity. And if this content is prone to compression artifacts due to dark and/or fast moving scenes, like a horror movie or an action movie, I am going to want to use less compression to avoid distracting artifacts.

However, if it is just a game show I like to put on in the background, I might not care if I compress it more. As long as it is watchable, I am not going to be precious about the compression quality.

Typically I choose an RF between 17 and 24.

17 will give bigger file sizes but will almost never create compression artifacts that were not already in the original content to begin with. This is for the stuff you really care about. Your absolute favs.

And if it is the game show I play in the background, I will probably choose 24.

But all of that space in between 17 and 24 is where you have to figure out what you can tolerate for different media. It may take some trial and error and test encodes to figure out what you prefer.

Like, when I compressed Law & Order for my mom, I knew that wasn't a huge visual spectacle. So I did 22. But for an action movie for my dad, I'd probably do 20 because of all of the fast moving scenes. And for my precious Batman TAS cartoons, I went with 17 because I wanted those files to be as close to perfect as possible.

The final slider I will talk about is the encoding speed. In the image above the preset is set to "slow." This ranges from "very slow" to "ultra fast." (Don't use placebo.) This setting basically allows Handbrake to either take its time and figure out the absolute best and most efficient compression... or to hurry up and just get the job done.

Think of this as the efficiency slider. If you give your computer more time to think, your compression will be more efficient. It will be the best compression possible for the quality RF you chose.

If you set it to a slower speed you will be able to get smaller file sizes with fewer compression artifacts, even if your chose a higher RF. But it could take one file many hours to encode.

At faster speeds your filesizes will get a little bigger and there is a chance some compression artifacts may sneak into your video, even if you chose a lower RF.

It's a little confusing, because the RF is supposed to be the only factor in image quality. But the encoding speed does factor in a little bit too. Especially in difficult to compress dark or fast scenes.

I was pretty happy with the "medium" setting. I have a fast computer with a lot of CPU cores and a lot of free time. So I didn't mind how long it took. But I actually think the "fast" and "faster" setting still gave great results while still shrinking file sizes.

Again, if it is super important to you, maybe do medium or slow for those files. Otherwise the fast setting is probably acceptable for most other things.

And finally the audio tab...

You are not going to get much benefit from compressing the audio. You might save a few megabytes. So I highly recommend just preserving whatever the original audio was. And you do this by selecting a "Passthru" codec. Handbrake will not touch the audio data and just copy it exactly to the new file.

However... if there is an audio codec that you know does not play nice with one of your devices, then you might want to convert it to something that works better. Though if you are using Plex, it can usually transcode audio without using significant CPU resources.

When I finished converting my media collection, I think I calculated that I saved myself about 20 TB of hard drive space when all was said and done. I think I have around 250 shows and 2000 movies. This left me a lot more room to keep more 4K content that is not worth compressing.

I definitely recommend watching some Handbrake tutorials and learning about some of the other functions. I also recommend learning how to do "batch encoding" so you can set up a bunch of files and just let your computer compress while you aren't using it.

But I covered the most important settings to get your started. Definitely do some tests and familiarize yourself with the process before you start converting your entire media collection.

I hope that was helpful. I promise explaining it is a lot harder than picking a few settings and hitting "start."

So I see you have feelings about Danny and Drago. I know a lot of people enjoyed what they became even if they didnt like how they started. How do you feel about it? ㅤㅤㅤThe simplified version of my stance is, I think Dany’s “love” for Drogo is based 100% in something akin to stockholm syndrome. She was dependent on him. She needed him to survive. She was put into a position where she was nothing without him. Drogo was not a loving husband. He was extremely abusive to Dany, and even though she was his “wife”, in Dothraki culture, she was nothing more than property to him. Important, cherished property? Yes. But still property. Drogo didn’t care for Dany as a person, and Dany would have never “loved” Drogo for who he is if she did not *need* to make herself love him to survive. I think in terms of the show, they were right for changing certain things (that I will get into) but overall they heavily romanticized their relationship and did not show how horrible things truly were for Dany. But also, I don’t think George himself handles their relationship the best in the books, either, because he often loses the themes of the narrative he has created here in favor of reader spectacle, and his own romanticization of their relationship later in the books hurts Dany’s narrative as well, but I’ll get more specific about that too.

The Circumstances Surrounding their Wedding

ㅤㅤㅤDaenerys’ wedding to Drogo was not willing. She was sold to him. This is not the same as an arranged marriage, and what happened to Daenerys was on an entirely different level. She was sold to Drogo as a slave. A wife, yes, but still a slave. Being his wife only meant that other men could not touch her without his permission and that she would be treated with *some* honor, but only as much as Drogo allowed. The very first “gift” given to Daenerys for her wedding to Drogo is a golden slave collar.

ㅤㅤㅤAs for the wedding itself, the only time Dany *wasn’t* afraid was when they gave her her Silver.

ㅤㅤㅤWhen it comes to the consummation, this is the one thing I’m actually glad they changed, because I feel like it more accurately represents the truth of the situation. I see people complain a lot that they changed a “consensual” scene in the books into a scene of r*pe, but the thing is, this was always r*pe. A 17 year old (13 in the books at this time !!!) cannot consent to an almost 30 year old man, and I don’t care about the “medieval morality” that tends to get used to justify this because first of all, the standards of arranged marriages do not even apply here because again, this was not an arranged marriage, she has been sold to him as essentially a glorified sex slave. Nothing about this makes this “okay”, and I think they were correct for changing the way George originally wrote the scene, because George romanticizes the absolute hell out of this relationship half the time in a way that conflicts with his condemnations of it (more on that later).

Their Marriage

ㅤㅤㅤThis was not a loving marriage. For the first few months, Dany is so miserable that she wants to die. Drogo r*pes her every single night, and it’s not ambiguous; she explicitly says that she did not want any of it. This is also the ONLY time Drogo ever spends time with Dany, otherwise he basically pretends she doesn't exist. He won’t so much as talk to her or attempt to communicate at all. She only exists to him when he wants to have sex with her, and then he goes right back to ignoring her. She is so broken down mentally and physically (both from having to ride with the khalasar all day and from Drogo at night) that she reaches a point where she decides she cannot go on living anymore, and decides that she would rather kill herself. The only thing that stops her is the fact that she has a Dragon Dream of being reborn in fire and wakes up with a renewed desire to live. Things don’t actually get better for Dany at all, she just starts coping in a different way by doing everything she can to assimilate and survive. He never stops hurting her, she just accepts that this is her life now and she has to make the best of it.

ㅤㅤㅤtw in these two text snippets for explicit examples of r*pe and suicidal ideation !!

ㅤㅤㅤDany forces herself to “love” Drogo because she *has* to. Her only options are to learn to love life with the Dothraki or be so miserable that she would rather die. Along with this, she recognizes that Drogo is the only source of agency she truly has. People only listen to her because she is Drogo’s Khaleesi. Being his Khaleesi protects her from things that she would otherwise have to endure. She even remarks on this much later in ASOS that if Khal Drogo had been a different man, things could have been much worse for her, because that was the position she was in. Her entire well-being was determinant on this one man NOT getting tired of her. This became her entire life. It became normal to her.

ㅤㅤㅤFrom A Storm of Swords, Dany reflecting on the truth of her relationship with Drogo.

ㅤㅤㅤThe true turning point in Daenerys’ relationship with Drogo comes when she learns she is pregnant. It’s from this point ONLY that Drogo starts treating Dany like more than a sex slave, and only because she carries his child. He cared more about the son inside her than he ever cared for her. He still dehumanizes her in spite of this, and still the only time they really spend together is at night when Drogo wants her sexually and then in the morning when they wake up; outside of that he’s always with his men. Dany is denied her own agency in her decisions. She is not allowed to have her own inner fire; anything she does is all because of their child making her that way, according to Drogo. In his eyes, Dany is only strong *because* of Rhaego. He takes offense at insults and slights made towards Daenerys only because, for one, she is his property, and any actions taken against her are also against his son. When he pledges to take the Iron Throne, he does not do that for Daenerys, no matter how much she had begged him to do it before; he does it for Rhaego, and only after an assassin from the west tried to kill Dany and the baby. Even if you look at how much more abusive her brother Viserys had grown in his descent to madness, Drogo himself did nothing to protect Dany from that. He only killed Viserys when he made a threat against their child. Once again I say Dany was a possession to him; a cherished possession, but a possession nonetheless. More like a pet and less than a person.

The Death of Drogo

ㅤㅤㅤDrogo dying shattered Dany’s illusions about her life (for the most part). That was when she remembered just how much danger she truly was in here, that she was never really a queen, and that any power she had, only existed because of the power Drogo had. The moment he was no longer there to protect her, she knew what would happen to her. She had seen the brutality of that reality over and over again, and in that moment when he fell from his horse she realized that was the fate awaiting her. The ones she had angered would r*pe and kill her or send her to the Dosh Khaleen. The realization panicked her, and she did everything she could to save Drogo, because Drogo was her only protection. This is where the “stockholm syndrome” is the most evident; she was completely dependent on Drogo and did not know how she would survive without him, in the most literal sense. The men of the khalasar stopped taking orders from her, and suddenly the only people that would help her were her handmaids, Ser Jorah, and three of Drogo’s bloodriders as the rest turned on her. In the blink of an eye she had been reminded of what her place truly was in the khalasar, how her entire life had been dependent on the whims of the man that owned her, no matter how much he called her Khaleesi and pretended she was a queen. She never was.

How George Has Failed Dany

ㅤㅤㅤNow after all this rambling, let me just say that I understand *why* a lot of the fandom still romanticizes the relationship between Daenerys and Drogo. Because not only did the show heavily romanticize it, but George did as well. I hate Dave & Dan with a burning passion, and they deserve a lot of the shit they get for how they portrayed this, but I don’t think changing the wedding scene was one of these moments. I think that was the moment that represented the truth of what Dany’s relationship with Drogo was the best. But also, George himself is not exempt from this. There are so many times in the books when he confuses his own narrative regarding Daenerys, especially when it comes to Drogo. Any point he tries to make about child brides and bridal slavery falls apart when one moment you have him highlighting how young Daenerys was when she became pregnant in the books (the infamous “it was her fourteenth nameday” line) and then the next he is writing an extremely voyeuristic sex scene with her and Drogo that serves no purpose other than to be a spectacle for the reader. Like . . . it's not even acknowledged and is completely forgotten by the turn of a page. You can’t make a point about how horrible this situation is and then spend the other half of the book ignoring that and writing this situation like a pure romance, even outright eroticizing it. It feels like anytime George does highlight the horrors of Dany’s situation in the text, he immediately turns back around with a “ but -- ” to somehow negate it.

ㅤㅤㅤI could forgive most of it in the first book, if only he continued to deconstruct Dany’s view of what happened to her and allowed her to process it as an abuse survivor as the series progressed. But the thing is, he denies her that. It makes sense for Dany to romanticize her own situation because that is the only way she could process it at the time, but the more separated she becomes from that period of her life, the more she should be allowed to look at it in retrospect and work through everything she’s repressed about it for the sake of surviving. And he doesn’t let her do that. There are the smallest moments particularly in ASOS where it seems like she is finally *starting* to work through it and see her relationship with Drogo for what it was, but then by the time we get back to her in ADWD, all of that has been undone and she’s back to seeing Drogo only as “her sun and stars”. Even the bare minimum of developments were reversed to continue perpetuating the idea that Dany and Drogo’s relationship was a romance. And it’s not fair to Dany.

ㅤㅤㅤIt’s one of the most frustrating things about this series for me, how George stagnates her in certain aspects and won’t let her own her own trauma *unless* he is trying to make a specific narrative point with it in a particular moment, then it's quickly swept under the rug again. Her trauma doesn't belong to her. The more the series progresses, the more Dany’s trauma is forgotten or overlooked, and that’s why I think a lot of people on a meta aspect struggle with understanding her motivations, because people forget that she was once a slave, too. And it’s easy to forget about that as long as the author of these books keep portraying a victimized woman as if her abuser was just a loving husband and not a man that only cared for her because he *owned* her.

Hi! So I'm really liking your LO AU so far, but I do have a few critiques. For one thing, the art is inconsistent in some places (ex: Hades has a long nose in the first panel, but then every appearance after, it's ordinary; ironically, I've heard this be said as a critique about the original too), and when Hermes explains why he got a job in the Underworld, the text is really hard to see when the red text is set against a black speech bubble, even when zooming in. This might also just be a Tumblr thing, but some panels also appear slightly blurry compared to others.

Aw I'm glad you like it! And thanks for the pointers! I am going to respond to them in my own defense a lil' if you don't mind (but rest assured I do recognize them as issues):

1.) That first episode was my first time drawing a Rekindled episode in full color (before I had even decided I wanted to stick with color, back then I was planning on just doing black and grey with color gradients) and it was more of a tribute to S1 LO/a coloring test that doubled as a potential opening for Rekindled (due to how it does diverge slightly from LO and is still relevant to Rekindled's plot). So that was before I realized looking back on old LO material that Hades' nose is, in fact, normal in the original pilot version of the comic! So I decided "Yeah, I'm gonna give him his normal hooked nose back" and it wasn't until I was on episode 2 or 3 that I realized that meant Episode 1 still had Pinocchio nose Hades 🤣 So that's something I may go back and fix later on but that's just like, the context of what happened there LMAO

2.) Yes, I've had someone else also point out to me that text issue and I've been neglecting going back and fixing it, that will be something I try to get to tonight!

3.) That's unfortunately a Tumblr thing, my way around it is just to crop each panel individually as much as I can to ensure they show up clearly in the feed, but not every panel will show up equally (despite all being drawn and exported in the same resolution). So my best recommendation for the user end is to either click it open on mobile or on desktop, click it open then right click "Open Image in New Tab". Tumblr doesn't display images vertically quite as cleanly as WT does but I have no plans to upload to WT (as I would get crucified by RS, WT, and the LO fanbase) so this is the only workaround for now until I find some kind of alternative. Sorry about that 😅

PSA from a fandom con photographer

As some of you know, I'm a con photographer. A while back, a bunch of us joined a group chat together, and we talk about all things cons and photography in there. Recently, the subject of photo theft has come up again, but this time a new comment was made and that's why I'm here.

In the past, I've heard photographers express frustration about people reposting our photos with watermarks cropped out or otherwise removed. Sometimes, these photos are edited further and someone else's watermark slapped on top of it. This is disrespectful, at best, and really offends the original photographer. Usually, this is done in an effort to gain clout online, and not for any artistic reasons. This is not what I'm here to talk about.

I know that a lot of folks on Tumblr use con photos for fic headers and aesthetics and such, especially for RPF fics. (Because we can totally tell whether a photo is Jensen or Dean, even with the background edited out, he's just that good.) It's come to my attention that some photographers would be REALLY uncomfortable with their art being used this way. They don't read fic, they don't understand it, or they just don't want their art used in a way that misinterprets the moment captured in the photo, even if it's fiction.

We need to respect this.

How do we feel when someone reblogs our fics and uses it to prop up an argument about our characters that we disagree with? We feel kinda shitty. That's how photographers feel when their photos are used in ways they weren't consulted about.

How do we fix this?

When you search Google and find an image from a con, do a reverse lookup on that image and AT LEAST TRY to find the original photographer. If the photo has been taken in the last year or so, you can come to me and see if I know who took it, too.

Ask that photographer if they are okay with you using their image in the way you intend. I know this is a pain, but remember how you'd feel if someone used your art without asking permission!

Many times, if you ask, the answer will be yes. Sometimes, it may be no. Please respect the answer you receive.

If you honestly try and can't find the photographer, then at least put a comment captioning this on the post where you use the photo. If you make a good faith effort and express this in your caption, that at least lets us know that you tried.

Personal note from me: If you like any of my photos, you are welcome to use them. I know I don't make the best photos in the fandom, so this isn't much, but it's there.

Also, "credit to Google" or "I found this on Google" is not credit. Google does not create images. Google only indexes them.

Just remember that there is a person behind every image and piece of art you find on Google.

Also, if you don't contact the artist/photographer, how does that person know that you liked their work? They don't. This is the same as if someone reads your fic but doesn't hit the heart or reblog it. Personally, I LOVE getting asked about my photos the same way I love hearing feedback on my fics. Let your photographer know you love their work!

I've been asked about screen grabs and gifs. I'm referencing just those photos taken by people at cons. Screengrabs and gifs also take talent to create, so if you can find out who made them and give them credit, that's awesome. Photos taken from the star's Twitter or IG....that's a good question. Credit would go to them, but they are impossible to ask if they mind. An argument could also be made that they know what might happen to any photo they put out there. (Maybe put a link to the original as credit?)

It was only recently that I saw someone comment about their photo being used to apply a narrative to Jensen based on his facial expression in the photo, and a brief mention of fic happened right after that, and I just got the feeling that certain photographers would not be pleased to know how we use their photos, sometimes.

As far as I know, no photographer has found their photo in a fic header and complained. But based on what was said, if they did, they might not be happy. And not just because most photos used in a fic header end up being further edited to make it work with the header, beyond cropping. For instance, an asexual photographer might feel icky about their photo being used as a header for a smut fic.

TL;DR - Credit your photographers in your headers, edits, and mood boards when at all possible. Make the effort to contact them and ask for permission. Some may give you blanket permission as I have. Some may not. Either way, this is their art that you're manipulating, so please respect it.

7. This may surprise some, but in terms of pov, it's Maglor. I have too many thoughts, he's a slippery guy as it is, and I am burdened by self-imposed pressure to do something original and nuanced. I find him so much easier to write from someone else's pov... probably because I experience him like a curious specimen preserved in glass... or some sexymysterious horriblebadnews man I'd never allow within 1km irl hahaha).

Which means I keep ending up writing Maedhros, the second most difficult character to write.

15. Off the top of my head, I'd like to write a one-shot sequel to Ungoliant's Bane where Elrond and Elros are adults watching their dad battle Ancalagon in the sky.

21. This one from Who By Fire. I'm proud of this fic overall, I tackled a lot of complex subjects and a complex relationship and I think I pulled it off.

Here, Fingolfin finds out the Feanorian who was found wounded near his camp is his nephew.

The resemblance would not have been obvious to one who had not spent a lifetime studying, envying every one of Fëanáro’s features. This elf was of slighter build, the line of his jaw softer, his brows less pronounced, and his hair not long and raven black but dull brown, cropped short. But the arching cheekbones, the slant of his nose, even the shape of his mouth—those were Fëanáro’s.

The bitterness of betrayal had corrupted Nolofinwë’s perception of his brother. Years of grinding resentment had erased all memory of Fëanáro’s faultless beauty and replaced it with a man whose visage was as ugly as his deeds. The image of Fëanáro that he held in his thoughts when at last he set foot in Endor was smeared with ash and cracked with frost. But looking upon this elf, that taint was washed clean. All at once he could recall his brother’s face as vividly as if it were him, and not his son, on the cot before him.

The elf’s lips quirked up at the corners; that, too, like his father. “Uncle Nolofinwë. Well met.” His smirk turned to a grimace as he dragged himself up to sit with his back against the wall.

Nolofinwë rushed to assist him, and his chest tightened again when his hand closed around the other’s arm, as if surprised to find that he was indeed present, and real.

He hesitated. How could he ask, Which one are you? The Little or the Last? The twins were near-strangers to him, born when the rift between him and Fëanáro was already too wide for Nolofinwë to have ever known them as children, and they had been mere shadows following behind their brothers on the march from Tirion.

Nolofinwë had never shared private words with either of them; never, in fact, looked into their eyes until now.

“Nephew,” said Nolofinwë, and seated himself on a stool opposite the cot. “I am glad to see you are recovering from your injuries.”

Fëanáro’s son scoffed. “Yes, fortunate for me that I am, apparently, to all but you, unrecognisable—I doubt I would be recovering so well if your healers knew who I was.”

Much as he did not wish to believe it, the same thought had crossed Nolofinwë’s mind. “I will ensure no one learns it.”

“That is probably wise. It would not look good if I died in your camp, would it? But don’t expect that saving my life will put them in your debt, either.”

“That is not why—”

“They will not even notice I am gone. Well—Pityo might, but he is used to my prolonged absences. And I do not plan to tell them I was here.”

He was Telufinwë, then. The Last Finwë, he’d been called, though he had been born when Anairë was carrying Arakáno. How like Fëanáro, Nolofinwë had thought, to use the naming of his own son to assert, as he had with his firstborn, that his lineage was the legitimate one. How like him to sacrifice his children on the altar of his pride.

But was Nolofinwë any better? That is what he had asked himself, when he held Arakáno’s limp body in his arms, already long emptied of life: Had it not been pride that had driven Nolofinwë to lead his child to his death?

He asked himself this again, watching Fëanáro’s youngest adjust himself on the bed, his bandages stained with blood. Telufinwë was not dead, but he was broken. A man who was whole did not set out alone in pursuit of a merciless predator. Only a man who held his life at naught would dare such a hunt.

Reflection and Evaluation of Learning 4

Sound design was something I had always done on my own, however this time i worked with 2 groups of people, the first didnt really do anything, but the second were working in a file format which I was unfamilier with AAF files. This is an advanced multimedia file type which can contain lots of types of data such as images and sounds seperated into their different layers. AAF seems to be the ultimate audio designing file type as its used in Pro Tools and FL Studio. I however had no way of opening these files, and i had to reformat my audio in a way which the sound designers could use in their software.

The software I had been using to add audio was Premiere Pro however my file was mixed in stereo and to import files into Pro Tools the file must be mono.

A bit of context so the next part makes sense... I had 14 audio tracks originally

With all my audio on separated and themed layers I created a new document with multichannel audio enabled, I then copied all the tracks from the old document to the new (creating another identical set of 14 tracks). However as this document is multichannel audio I set the total number of audio channels to 8.

(above are the tracks, there are 14 but the window was too small to show all the tracks at once so its cropped off a few)

I then each track to be panned entirely to the left or right in an alternating pattern (as seen below)

When I exported this document as an .AAF file it pushes the 14 audio tracks through 8 channels where the left and right are each different tracks. The software my sound engineers were using automatically assumed these stereo outputs as mono, and so would separate my 8 channels out back into their original 16 tracks

This process worked and enabled my sound designers access to the work I had already done and now I understand the software sound engineers use I am more prepared to format my work in a way (from the start) that is best for them. While yes, this is not strictly speaking animation skills, I do think learning this was important as I plan to work with the same sound designers moving forward I do also see that this might have been a slight waste of time if my goal was to only finish my film.

I could have put this time into other things which may have had more immediate impacts but I am happy I prioritised this as the deadline for the MA is not the same as the deadline for my film, and moving forward this is so useful to have and understanding of.

This information was way out of my comfort zone and so I used a couple of tutorials to educate myself on the subject.

Tidbit: Oscar Woods & the Orange Terror

Notice: this chapter of 'Tidbits' is reposted from it's original document of 2021, and may no longer be up-to-date with current headcanons.

-Oscar Woods is an original character of mine, who's still really new to the group, but is and has become Dusty's lover slash emotional support plane. He's a Curtiss P-36 Hawk (looks very much like Skipper actually, minus the gull-shape in the wings and a few other design things. But the bare-bones idea is similar on the exterior and esposed cowling).

-Oscar's main color palette, though NOT set in stone yet, is planned to be greys and forest greens, and potentially a touch of purple. I have not sold myself on this plan however, so I'll keep you posted if it changes. I need to make a reference image or three for Oscar first before I make any final final decisions.

-Oscar is an asexual - and yes, before you ask, this does not mean he's "not allowed to date/be in love with/be romantic with Dusty". That has nothing to do with that, it just means he has a lack of sexual attraction. He does not, however, lack romantic attraction for the crop duster. Oscar is as one would say, an Ace of Hearts: that is, a romantic asexual. He will cuddle and kiss the crap out of Dusty, and he enjoys doing so. He just doesn't have the overwhelming desire to want to fuck him, that's literally it. (And Dusty doesn't mind that, either; his own libido isn't the strongest anyways, so really he just relieves that on his own terms.)

-Going back to the paint job/livery idea, since he's an ace I may incorporate spades, hearts, or just card suites in his design. It's a work in progress, y'all leave me be, I'm tired.

-Dusty (headcanon name Dustin Liam Crophopper - not sure if some of you guys knew that) has himself an older brother by about four years, named Chase. Oscar and Chase are...devious, together. It might actually be reccomended that they are never in the same space together, because they are relentless teases to Dusty - like seriously, they share secrets about his most ticklish spots and then go for the kill. It's all in good fun of course, but Dusty is always the target, always and forever.

-Though distantly, Oscar is actually related to Skipper. He's his (I looked this up so this is actually accurate) first cousin twice removed - AKA, the grandson of Skipper's first cousin. He and Dusty meet by coincidence for this reason later on (details of which will be explained in a future fic!)

-[specific to the humanized variant] Dusty, after the incurable development of his epilepsy, ends up with a service dog, a Golden Retriever by the name of Amber (based off of a real Golden Retriever my dad had of the same name - though, not a seizure response service dog). Oscar and Dusty both love her to pieces, and Oscar totally doesn't see it as a huge bonus when it comes to dating and living with Dusty. XD

I tried to quit when you went to shit, when you proved to the world that you only cared about yourselves and not the people who needed you most. But here I am coming back for more like a god damn junkie. I kinda hate this, not gonna lie, but there's really nothing else like VRchat.

VRchat is a weird and amazing thing when you're queer. The aging 2019 Unity Engine LTS build it uses, although held together by duct tape and super glue, provides near infinite capabilities for self expression to those who have the time and patience to understand how to use it's SDK toolkit alongside other community tools like various Blender Plugins. It goes without saying, for those such as myself who have struggled with their own identity for a long time, this shit will crack eggs. And it shattered what remained of mine in the beginning of 2020. This is why this badly written and mismanaged clusterfuck of a Unity game holds a special place in my heart.

To make a very fucking long story short, I've been on VRchat since basically the beginning. My earliest memories of VRC were in late 2017, early 2018 where everything was far more raw, simple, and experimental. VRchat itself was a blank canvas, and on that canvas was a tight knit community that spawned an iconic culture all to its own. And yes, before anyone asks I do know de wae. But for those early years, mainly because of my lack of budget and stable income, I was tied down to just keyboard and mouse controls from a desktop PC. It's a sub ideal way to play VRC but you make do with what you have in that kind of situation and make the best of it. So when I had the means to get my own headset in the beginning of 2020, an Oculus Rift S, you can bet your ass the first thing I loaded into was VRchat.

Before we continue, I need to introduce the concept of phantom touch or phantom sense. Phantom touch is a term that was originally for amputees who could feel their missing limbs when given certain stimuli, typically some form of mirror therapy or sometimes via ones prosthetics. Phantom senses in VR are along the same lines. For all intents and purposes, your avatar in VR is the same as your body to your brain. Now, not everyone gets this, and those who do get it in varying amounts in just different ways. I'm admittedly on the more extreme end of this, as far as my brain gives a shit my avatar is my body and that ends up causing some interesting sensations. Most importantly, it pretty much drives my own choice of avatar since a lot of options out there just don't feel right. Yeah an avatar may be super cute or super funny but with that level of immersion for someone like myself it becomes very apparent that a lot of things will give full on dysphoria. This isn't really limited to anything either, I've noped off of cute looking avatars for a variety of reasons, sometimes even just small things like clothing, hair style, body proportions, height, etc. On the flip side of that, the right avatar can relieve a lot of dysphoria for someone like me who does experience gender dysphoria regularly in their day to day lives. So what were my options then?

Wade through a lot of public avatars until you find something anywhere between just right to perfect. The world of public avatars available is almost limitless, as games driven by user generated content tend to be so there's plenty of options.

Make your own avatar, either from scratch or a prefab base. This is again where the limitlessness of the engine comes into play, where the only limitation is your own technical abilities with Unity SDK, and tools like Blender or Maya.

I got lucky and took option one. I found one that felt just right, a Tda based red haired fox girl in a cute hoodie, crop top, and jeans, and only needed a few minor tweaks. While there was a bit of a language barrier, the creator of this avatar and I got something worked out and the image above is the result. This is me. This was when what remained of my egg, so to speak, was completely fucking shattered into oblivion. This was where I realized that "Nah yeah I'm not fucking cis," after years of going back and forth and being on the fence about my own sense of self. Ultimately, VRchat ended up a coping mechanism for my dysphoria. I was free. I was me. I ended up parting ways with the guy who made the model posted above for reasons I won't get into. I was never given the source files to update the model to SDK3 so where it is now is where it will be forever until SDK2 gets dropped entirely. So, in mid 2021 when I found a prefab base that was relatively well support and easy to work with on booth.pm called Imeris, I jumped on that. I re-made me.

Maybe to a bit of an extreme, but whatever. Bouncy squishy boobs on my chest makes girly gender euphoria go brrrr in a way I can't get over. But this is how I stayed for about a year without any major changes save for some new outfits every now and then.

In August, 2022, VRchat implemented EasyAntiCheat into the game. The reasoning for it is all over the place and while I have some insider information as to why it's not been stated publicly and I don't feel like getting sued into oblivion. But regardless of their reasoning, no matter how much public backlash they got, no matter how many members of the community who relied on third party client mods for accessibility for various disabilities and basic usability and quality of life functions not present in the base game, they pushed the patch out live anyways. They pushed out a patch knowing it broke compatibility with some Oculus headsets and software, this even was noted in the patch notes. They didn't care about us. That much was clear.

I swore off VRchat then and there, but the reality is the other options all sucked. NeosVR had NFT integration which is something I despise on principle. ChilloutVR, while promising, still lacks a lot of the functionality for their dev tools that makes a lot of my shit work. It was on par with early VRchat SDK1 and SDK2 tools, which compared to SDK3 with Udon were beyond archaic. I tried to give that some love, but it's so far from ready to take the place of VRchat that I couldn't switch over. Maybe some day, though, CVR will be in a position where it's a suitable place to call my home in the metaverse.

So after dealing with VRC being broken for months on my machine, I finally figured out a workaround. Turns out my main issue where VRchat was crashing to desktop was because of some sandboxing options I had enabled way back when I was still running Windows 10. Disabling these settings fixed the crashing to desktop, but Oculus overlay still crashes any time the virtual desktops are used. This, however and unfortunately, is a documented issue because of how EAC works, and there's no real fix for it. In any case though, I can be me again. And while unfortunately a lot of my friends have left VRC entirely post EAC update, there's still enough to justify sticking around.

At the time of writing this, I'm a month out from hopefully receiving hormone replacement treatment and beginning my transition proper. It's a bit overdue, admittedly, but I know some day soon I'll feel comfortable in my own shell. For now, this will continue to be my escapism from the dysphoria that's plagued me for years.

I don't know if you can choose a default Save folder with Viewpoint 3, but you can first run Viewpoint 3 standalone and do a Save As and select your Documents folder for the save folder and, if v.3 then always defaults to that folder first then you might find the script works. To fix it in v.3.5.5 I had to go to the Save As dialogue of Perfectly Clear and select my Documents folder as the default save location for the processed file, and that script now works perfectly. I ran into this issue with Perfectly Clear Complete v.3.5.5, which has a different Save routine than v.2. If Viewpoint v.3 is forcing the Saves to be in a different folder than the script is only returning the same copy of the image that was open in PSP when it first saved into the Documents folder. The script works by saving and copying files to and from your Documents folder. If v.3 has a different Save routine then that could also cause your issue. As I said, the script that works for me is for v.2.5 of Viewpoint. As both a standalone application and as a plugin, it offers simple visual tools for making spectacular corrections, along with advanced controls for unrivaled precision.I got to thinking about this issue and wanted to add a bit more of my thoughts on it.

So, if Tiffany G wins, the AO3 we know will end. There will be no freedom to write, it will be monitored, for Tiffany's goal isn't for the people. It's to put on a "better image", ban all illegal items in their specific country so AO3 can be included again. We've already had so many platforms taken away, and basically AO3 is the few, if not last place anyone has on the internet for creative freedom. 

If these censorship rules were to pass, this is just some of the ones we will be looking at: 

No LGBTQ themes

No gore

No violence

All shows, characters, phrases prohibited in that specific country will be banned on AO3. 

Nothing past the neck. Whether this is sexual or in general, I'm not 100% certain. 

Nothing that may go against the political party

No religious beliefs against their own

Must be submitted for approval of the party to be posted

Any violation could bring real life consequences.

So this is a very serious matter. If AO3 goes under the censorship Tiffany is wanting, the community will be under those censorship laws. Most Chinese fandoms and creators don't want this, they fear it even. This doesn't even include discrepancies in Tiffany's replies. There's a lot of information out there, you just gotta look. I hope this is what you were wanting, since this is a very serious matter.

As a mini reminder, I have attached a few screenshots as to how this is affecting the Chinese community as well.
