I think the most underutilized part of soulmate AU worldbuilding is probably the internet? I know it’s a little unromantic, but objectively speaking the sheer overnumber of dating apps in our REGULAR world—each of which go to great lengths trying to compartmentalize and synthesize a person’s primary traits—indicates that there should be an even greater number of those in a soulmate-verse.

Take “only see the world in your soulmate’s eye color until you touch.” Obviously in the early 2000s there’d be chat rooms for blues-seeking-browns etc, and then dating apps where you can impute your eye color and only match with people of another eye color, and so on. Reality TV shows would also go crazy of course. In the “touch your soulmate and x happens” AUs they’d cast an unmatched bachelor or bachelorette and then fly them all over the country while auditioning hundreds of people who think they might be “the one” to line up and wait for the briefest touch—just in case they might be right.

And the discourse. People would argue, maybe, that apps and shows are somehow disrespectful to the natural process. People who found their soulmate out in the wild may smugly say that real soulmates just find each other, and that apps are a waste of time. IDK. There are a lot of possibilities for how soulmate stuff would intersect with modern daily life.

I see a lot of fics that characterize Zuko as loser failboy and while I appreciate the sentiment—because he is, in spirit, a radiohead fan—the fact is he’s not bad at everything. He’s just not naturally gifted at everything. So next to his sister, Katara, Aang, and Toph, who are all inexplicably the most talented tweenagers alive, he looks kind of. average. This is also in part because, due to all the screaming etc etc, he makes everything look 10x harder than it actually is. I imagine if given the choice between picking up a language arts textbook and stranding himself in a foreign country with no aid, the latter would be his preferred method of learning a new language. He’d brute force his way through a wall instead of picking the lock on a door.

So, depending on your definition of the word, this still might qualify him as a loser, but he’s also a Jack of all trades. It’s just that the trades did not come easily, and in fact they probably came as unwillingly as it’s possible for a trade to come. because it’s Zuko. The crux of it is that he was born to fail and decided (a word which is too painless and not nearly rabid enough to describe the process) that this simply. was not an option.
