well, that’s just weird. where did it go? was it added to the digital version later, or perhaps removed from the recent physical prints? i only bought my copy a month or so ago.

after increased intensity of israeli aistrikes tonight, the last cable providing communications was destroyed. telecommunications have been completely cut off. they cannot reach one another. they cannot reach paramedics. the red crescent society has completely lost contact with their branch in gaza. nobody inside can reach anyone inside, and especially not outside of gaza to tell us what is going on. this is a complete atrocity.

This shot speaks more about Nick’s character than a thousand words

But I’ll type the thousand words anyway! Well, it’ll probably be a little less than a thousand, but figure of speech and all that. So, first of all, a recap of what we know about Nick Nelson and what he was going through in that moment: he’s a popular boy who plays rugby with a bunch of cis, straight boys, and is expected to fit in that mold, but he doesn’t. He starts questioning his own sexuality and looking at his friend group with a more critical way of thinking, being able to see when they’re being… well, terrible. If you’re here, it’s because you know Heartstopper, so you know what I mean.

Now, the shot shows us Nick, but the focus isn’t him. We can see the people in the background better, and the position of the camera is just. Wow. So, The screen is divided in three: the left and right sides, with Nick in the centre. It feels like a decisive moment, as if he needs to make a choice.

On the first side, we have the group we love so much. We have Tara, Darcy, Tao, Elle and Isaac, as well as Charlie on the ground. There’s a heaviness in this moment, in the way we can feel how much Nick wants to run to Charlie (like he actually does in the comics), to comfort him, check if he’s okay, do whatever he can to make him feel better etc.

On the other hand side, his friend group and the other rugby players are standing there too, watching. Going to Charlie at that point meant making something public, it meant letting everyone know the extent of his feelings for Charlie, which is something that he himself doesn’t know very well. With this, I don’t mean that he doesn’t know he likes Charlie, of course. What I mean is, while he does know that he likes him, he doesn’t know how much. He’s still letting this feeling lie down with him, getting acquainted with it, learning what it does to him. And to go to Charlie would mean wearing his heart on his sleeve in front of all these people when he didn’t even have the opportunity to read it yet, to know what all of it means or the amount of care with which he wants to handle his feelings.

So, we have an unfocused Nick Nelson, who isn’t familiar with who he is yet, which is a contrast to the people in the background who we, as watchers, can see quite well: Tara and Darcy, who are out as lesbians; Elle, who’s a girl who has been out as trans for ages; Tao, who takes sides protecting his friends and actually reacting to bullies instead of hiding from them… this group of people who, the way Nick sees it, knows who they are, just like his rugby mates. Even when it’s probably just a facade, the popular kids tend to act like they have it all figured out, with all that confidence, and when you’re not feeling confident at all, that overwhelms you. So, with all those people who are very clear and who he sees, Nick appearing divided and out of focus in this shot makes sense with the narrative.

And well, Charlie isn’t alone with the feeling of having the world making him feel like disappearing, does he?

But!!!! Happy cheesy part of this post right ahead! Now, neither of them are blurry! And while they do run away after this, it’s not to hide, it’s to have a little more of intimate. You know, that thing about solitude and loneliness being two different things? Yeah :D

So, I’ll leave you with yet another cheesy sentence, because I feel like it: both the first picture of this post and the last have Charlie Spring falling: while in the first, he’d fallen on the ground, the second one shows when he’d fallen in love.

I can’t stop thinking about the scene where Nick stares at Tara and Darcy kissing

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about this scene of the Heartstopper TV show (that released yesterday on Netflix, so WATCH IT. PLEASE.), but as I haven’t seen anyone rambling about it in a way that makes justice to the way I’m looking at it, I decided to write the damn post myself.

Initially, my reaction was the good, old “Nick Nelson, lesbian protector!”, that made my heart stop burst with joy, as a lesbian. Heck yeah, my perfect golden retriever boy supports my existence! Canonically! Staring at people like me in a “good for them! I’m so proud!” way. That alone not only is enough, but also makes this an important scene. But it’s an important show, in general, so I guess it goes without saying? 

Anyways. The second thing I’ve noticed was the envy/jealousy; in this moment, Nick realises he wants to express his sexuality the same way Tara and Darcy are doing, and admires them for it. He longs for it. It also shows that lesbians and queer men aren’t as far as people make it out to be. We share some experiences, in the way we look at society as queer people, but there’s this idiotic ‘rivalry’ between lesbians and gay men, that plays into the ‘gay best friend’ trope, as if gay men could connect more with straight women than with lesbians, because of their common attraction to men. And this scene, with a boy who likes boys (too), seeing a lesbian couple kissing and recognising his own queerness like a mirror is so important! 

In a more personal note, rather than a general experience, I’ve seen myself in Nick. It felt a bit of a circle, a lesbian feeling seen through a bisexual character who feels seen through two lesbians. I’ve had contact with queerness mainly around the internet, just like many queer kids of the same generation as me, and while I know some queer people (who I can count on my fingers), I’ve never personally seen queer affection in front of me, in real life. I’ve seen it in movies and photographs, I’ve written about it and expressed it myself to several partners I had, but it’s always been virtual, long distance. And watching this scene, I got it. Nick standing there in a party, and while he knew what gay people were, and probably had seen a picture or a video of queer affection, he was now seeing it, in front of him. Those were two people he knew, people from his social circle. 

I don’t know whether I’m making sense here, but I had to ramble about it, because after watching this scene so many times and feeling a thing or two in my stomach each time I played it, it was time to recognise that it needed to be addressed. Well. I’ve had this feeling in my chest, and now I’ve done something with it. Feels refreshing! (And you probably haven’t heard the last of me rambling about Heartstopper!)
