June 13, 1927: Greeted by a crowd estimated at 7.5 million, Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, New York-to-Paris flyer, received the greatest reception ever accorded a hero with the possible exception Admiral Dewey. From the time he arrived in the bay off the Battery in a Curtiss 0-1 pursuit plane, the flyer’s line of march–a six-mile tour of triumph–was lined with dense crowds waiting to catch a glimpse of the boy who captured their imaginations.
