was watching futurama on my switch. got an ad for futurama that mentioned there are new seasons coming despite having no footage or air date yet. got shaky with excitement and recorded it anyway.

The dismissal of adult cartoons really makes me mad. I understand being frustrated by the fact that certain types of shows tend to get greenlit over others, and wanting more shows that break out of the family sitcom mold, but there are PLENTY of shows that do this— and plenty of shows that follow a more traditional format and do so really well. I want more adult toons of every genre and art style too but it really ticks me off to see people complain about how there aren’t any good adult cartoons out there when there really are and they just don’t get enough love.

When you (theoretical Twitter user) say you want a “good adult cartoon” do you mean one that looks really pretty and anime? How about Castlevania? Or if you want less violence, and more colorful and cute, how about Tuca and Bertie? On that note, you want more female-centric shows? How about YOLO Crystal Fantasy? If you want something more serious, how about Bojack Horseman or Moral Orel? If you want something happier and feel-good, how about Close Enough? You want more fluid animation? How about Primal? There’s fantasy, there’s sci-fi, there’s slice-of-life, there’s action, there’s (mostly) comedy, there’s drama… like, there is SO much out there that just isn’t as popular so people don’t consider it.

And even with that being the case, I think people don’t give enough credit to adult toons that ARE decently popular. I think The Simpsons and Futurama are such interesting cases when it comes to fandom, because they’re both really well-known shows, but finding people who are Fans-with-a-capital-F of these shows, who analyze them and make fanworks for them, is harder than you’d expect. ESPECIALLY with Futurama. I think it has so much to offer, and it has so much depth and heart and story that goes overlooked because it looks like The Simpsons and people figure it’s just a comedy show you watch for laughs every now and then. And obviously it succeeds as that kind of show and is really funny! But I think it is the kind of show that a lot of disgruntled adult toon fans are looking for and it weirdly doesn’t get brought up enough.

There’s definitely a problem with networks tending to prefer shows that follow a formula they know will make money, which is why a lot of the adult toons that get greenlit and get advertising are family comedies, have a recognizable art style, or have a recognizable name attached. I want that to change too. But dang, if people dismiss the boatloads of fantastic and diverse adult toons that are out there just because they’re, what, not that popular or they don’t look like Disney cartoons…? Then that status quo isn’t gonna change!

I’ve seen a lot of different “hot takes” about adult animation because of recent events that I don’t really want to get into on this blog. Mainly that all adult animated cartoons are vapid, derivative, ugly, nihilistic, cynical, shallow, etc., etc. But there ARE good adult cartoons out there, almost all of them get completely ignored.

There’s The Simpsons, Futurama (especially the earlier episodes for these shows), Castlevania, Close Enough, and BoJack Horseman. Then there are shows I haven’t really watched like King of the Hill, Bob’s Burgers, Inside Job, and Final Space. And there are likely quite a few that I’m missing, these are just off the top of my head. And of course, Close Enough, Final Space, and Inside Job just got canceled without getting much of a chance to get their feet off the ground.

And yes, I know these shows have fans. But if I’m being honest, their fanbases are so fucking tiny (with some exceptions). You rarely see people talking about these shows in the wider animation fan community. It feels like these shows are very much ignored outside of a small group of people. You have people screaming for good examples of adult animation, when the good ones we have are ignored and then get canceled.

And yes, I know these shows are flawed, but everything has flaws and problems. And if you actually watch these adult cartoons, you’ll find that they tackle a lot of meaningful subjects and actually have surprisingly positive outlooks on life. Not to mention that shows like BoJack Horseman and Close Enough have wonderful LGBTQIA representation that rarely gets discussed, if at all.

And you know what? The “art style” argument irritates the hell out of me. I personally don’t think any of these shows look ugly. They have art styles that are unique, that suit the show very well, and quite a few of them are diverse in terms of body types and race. Boiling everything to “ugly” is pretty shitty, given how many talented artists work their asses off on these shows.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t criticize adult animation, but I think it’s insulting to reduce an entire genre to “everything is terrible.” If you look into the history of many of these shows, the creators worked their asses off to get them greenlit, and are insanely passionate about telling great stories. It’s frustrating to see people boil everything down to “all adult cartoons are nothing but sex jokes and ugly art.”

#there is only so much you can do as just a viewer of toons #but there are sooooooo many great options out there to explore in terms of things to watch! #and if you support those toons then maybe there is a greater chance of more toons like them being made!

Ghost--There are a few Futurama smut WIPs I've started that I will never finish. I have about three for Frender and one for Freeler. One thing I've learned about writing longfics is that it causes me a lot of anxiety to balance a one-shot while I'm in the middle of what amounts to a novel, so I've had to abandon one-shots I've started.

Eyes--Same answer as above. Some of the WIPs I started were earlier rough drafts and absolutely needed to be scrapped. And now they REALLY won't see the light of day; all of them were on my old laptop and I can't get that thing to power on anymore. I didn't back any of them up either, so I can't retrieve them even if I changed my mind.

Two of the Frender WIPs I started are earlier drafts of "Pretty in Pink," which I actually did end up publishing to Ao3, and I took a few passages from the earlier drafts and repurposed them for Chapter 3 of To Err Is Human. My very first Frender WIP was about Bender cheating on Fry and Fry getting revenge by sleeping with another man. I reused this idea and integrated it into the plot of Escalating.

Finally, the Freeler smut WIP is something that will never see the light of day. I believe I wrote 4,000 words for it in one go, and then I decided that it was utter garbage. Let's just say this: it was bad sex pollen and no one needs to read bad sex pollen. Not everything we create can be winners, and it's healthy to take Ls from time to time. I would like to write Freeler someday, but I can't see myself writing smut for a poly ship. At least, not with my current skill level.

Creepy moon--Clamps. I'm trying to rearrange my outline to my current WIP to see if I can integrate Clamps and the Robot Mafia into the story. I love writing Amy and Leela so much, and I've tried to feature them more heavily in both Escalating and To Err Is Human, but I struggle with larger casts. I would like to give them proper character arcs and write about their relationship. The state of Futurama lesbian porn is depressing, it would be nice to fix that.

Sparkles--Oh boy, this is tricky because it's fucking hard for writers to say nice things about our writing. Here it goes, three adjectives that positively describe my writing: ambitious, witty, eloquent. I've had quite a few commenters tell me that my dialogue is in-character, and that tends to stick with me as well.

Picking a top 5 is HARD because there are so many episodes of this show that are tied in my heart and have different things going for them!! If I’m not including ones that were said already in this thread— which does eliminate quite a few faves— then I would say my top 5 favorites are:

• The Sting: Probably my favorite episode of the entire show! An extremely well made episode of TV and one of those that kind of just goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. I saw this on TV for the first time when I was probably around… 12? And I didn’t expect where it was gonna go at ALL because they played it after one of those famous comedic episodes they play on TV all the time, like Slurm Factory or Amazon Women or something. I was floored!!! It’s dramatic and funny and sad and sweet and it’s one of the Freela episodes that I think feels the most reciprocal which is really welcome.

• Insane in the Mainframe: NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT: MY OTHER ALL TIME FAVORITE EPISODE…….

This is another one I vividly remember catching on TV when I was even younger and it altered my brain permanently. There’s so much in this episode that makes me laugh every time I watch it (looking at you malfunctioning Eddie) but I think the shenanigans with Fry thinking he’s a robot and his instincts being to help people are precious. And I cannot lie……… Fry suffering in the asylum is so sad but it’s also really cute and endearing to me 😭😭😭 I love when my favorite characters are tormented. With an end in sight of course 💕💕💕

• Leela’s Homeworld: Swinging the pendulum in the other direction again, this is such a fantastic Leela episode and it makes me cry every single time 😭😭😭 This and Game of Tones are tied for the hardest a Futurama episode has made me cry. (Game of Tones may slightly edge it out because I thought about that one too hard on my way to class one time and started tearing up so bad that I had to duck into the library and cry in a stall and then move on with my day djejhekfndlfs)

Fry is so supportive of Leela in this episode which warms my heart. Leela’s confrontation with her parents is full of tasty and sad dramatic tension but the reveal is soooo beautiful and sweet— and then the song coming in and then the montage showing that her family always cared for her even when she thought she was alone :’’’’’) LIKE NOOOO I’LL CRY JUST TALKIN ABT IT……. \(;—;)/ SHE IS SO LOVED.

OTL she was never lonely not even for a minute OTL DROWNING IN TEARS

• How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back: 🎶🎶🎶JAMAICA!!(JAMAICA!!!!)🎶🎶🎶

It has a great song, Bender losing his personality and his friends questing to get it is great too, and it has Fry being the cute boytoy of a powerful woman with brown hair and glasses who I can project onto. SO WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE

I watched this episode (……..mostly the parts with Morgan and Fry) a questionable amount of times over Big Spring-Summer Heavy Duty Quarantine of 2020 because my Fry crush decided to rear its head for the first time in years and I was very lonely and stir crazy. Fun times

• Teenage Mutant Leela’s Hurdles: OUGHHGHGH THIS EPISODE IS SO CUTE *ROARS* This episode is so shockingly, earnestly cute and fluffy for this show and I eat that shit up. It is SO cute. My only complaint is with the implication that chubby baby Amy is anything less than precious. The kiddo Planet Express crew and all of their antics are unfathomably cute. You can probably tell by now that I love a good Leela episode and this is a fantastic one!! It builds on her relationship with her parents in a really creative and sweet way, and the resolution of the episode is heartfelt too!

Fry and Leela’s teenage date… Leela reading the baby crew stories (and Fry requesting a space story 😭😭😭)… Leela sneaking out (the cutest thing Leela does in the entire show imo)… RHEHRHHRRHRJGHGGH

Not that anyone asked, but I wanted to compile a list of my top 5 favorite episodes of Futurama and see if anyone else had a similar list :D

5. Godfellas - I mean, who doesn’t love this episode. Bender floating alone in space playing God is just way too good of a plot line. I especially love it bc of how dedicated Fry is to find him. Something about that is just way too wholesome.

4. The Late Phillip. J Fry - This episode is just absolutely fantastic the entire way around. I think it is one of the coolest interpretations of time travel the show has done. I love the song, I love the way Leela thinks Fry stood her up and then died, and I love that they crack a 6 pack open to watch the world end. It’s just one of the best.

3. I Second That Emotion - This one I feel like is not on many people’s list, but something about it is just so great. Bender feeling actual human emotion really got me in this one. This was probably the episode where I decided Bender was my favorite character. Not only is it hilarious, but seeing Bender be vulnerable is really cool, and there’s a ton of funny jokes in it too. Fry screaming and then going “I burned my finger” is probably one of my favorite jokes ever.

2. The Honking - This was actually the first episode of Futurama I had ever seen. So, it instantly earns a place on this list. The insane amount of jokes in this episode earn it a high spot. The Shining references, Fry getting emo bc Bender picked Leela over him, Leela’s frozen meals joke, Bender being covered in transmission fluid instead of blood… the list goes on! It really holds a close place to my heart.

1. Hell is Other Robots - This episode I whole heartedly believe is the best Futurama has ever done. We are introduced to the Robot Devil, who is an incredible character, and see so much of the Beastie Boys; who I love. Not only that, but I think electricity addicted Bender is one of the funniest interpretations of his character ever. And then religious Bender… “who wants to come to my exceedingly long, un-airconditioned baptism ceremony” has to be one of the funniest jokes in the show. And to top it all off, the SONG!!!! I literally have the entire thing memorized because of just how much I’ve watched this episode. The way Fry and Leela work together to save Bender too is just too good. Overall, this episode is just incredible.

Some other runner ups include Silence of the Clamps, Lethal Inspection, and Ghost in the Machines.

Like… IMO, if you are seeking out nsfw content of a character that you think is attractive enough to see in a context like that, you’re also attracted to all of the specificities that make them THEM, right? And Fry is a cute guy of average height and a kinda chubby build and in universe has a small-to-average dick that gets ridiculed in the futuristic age of crazy cosmetic procedures. THAT’S HOT!!! AT LEAST TO ME!!! WHATEVER!!!!! At the same time that I’ve seen people try to depict him in completely unrealistic ways that don’t embrace these characteristics, I ALSO see people write or draw him as he is in canon but act like these are unsexy flaws that would repel the people he’s supposed to be shipped with like Leela or Bender. I don’t get it. Like… why even bother foraying into erotica with this character if you find him so repulsive as he organically is. I TRULY DONT GET IT.

TALES FROM BIG TEXAS COMICON 2022

On Sunday, me and @redheadlesbianweirdo went to Big Texas Comicon as respectively Leela and Fry! I was gonna style the wig over one eye to make it so just one was showing, but that fell through… so I had four eyes instead of one eye. 🤓

And guess who was there…? BILLY WEST!

He did a one-hour long panel and I got to get up and ask him a question!!! When I got up there, he looked at me and said, “Have we met somewhere before?” 💜👁 So cute!! I asked him about how the voice acting landscape had changed, now compared to when he first started out. He said that currently he’s frustrated by stunt casting and how roles will get cast by people who are famous instead of people who can actually do the job. Ain’t that the truth. He also talked about being on the autism spectrum and how he considers it a superpower that helps him do his job, and that he thinks that everyone who’s autistic has a superpower of some kind. It made me happy to hear him talk so openly about that!

Some anecdotes I think you’ll enjoy…

He told two stories about Katey Sagal that were very sweet, and also made sure to point out that even though she’s a famous superstar, she is 100% the right, capable person to voice Leela because her voice is so distinct and she’s really talented. His dislike of celebrity culture is well-known but obviously doesn’t apply to every celebrity ever!

1) He talked about how great of a singer she is and told the story of how she invited him and their castmates to go see her band play one time. She sang a cover of a song that he said used to make him cry back when he was younger, and when she asked what he thought after the show, he said she made him cry too.

2) Another story: one time, he was at a juice bar on Rodeo Drive when Katey burst in the doors, turned to him, and said “Billy, you gotta help me!” Outside the doors were a bunch of nasty paparazzi. She hid behind him and he turned to the paparazzi and lifted up his shirt and stuck up his middle fingers (and demonstrated this for us). He said he thought it would make it into tabloids with headlines like “Fry Saves Leela!” But it never happened. The photos are floating around out there somewhere, though.

Also— he had a green and black checkered Tanjiro backpack with him up on stage. A congoer got up and asked him if he liked anime and he said that he didn’t know much about it, but that he had been in a few, and asked if she had seen Bad Grandpa because he was in that. I LOST IT at that. She recommended he watch Demon Slayer and he said he’d check it out.

His panel was great and Ash has some footage she’s gonna post! We weren’t able to go to his booth and get his autograph because we just barely missed him 🥲🥲 He had a flight to catch and left while we went to get some cash from an ATM. But I WILL meet him formally somedayyyy… SOMEDAYYYYY!!!!
