THE EFFECTS OF VIOLENCE IN THE LGBT COMMUNITY
Tumblr media
According to a recent study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, LGBT people are almost four times more likely than non-LGBT people to be victims of violent victimisation, such as rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault. Additionally, LGBT people are more likely to suffer violence at the hands of a stranger than from a known aggressor.
Researchers looked at information from the 2017 National Crime Victimization Survey, which was the first survey of its kind to include information on respondents' sexual orientation and gender identity.
According to the findings, there were 71.1 victimizations of LGBT individuals for every 1,000 people in 2017, as opposed to 19.2 victimizations of non-LGBT people. With the exception of robbery, which revealed no discernible difference between LGBT and non-LGBT people, LGBT people had higher rates of serious violence victimisation.
According to lead author Andrew R. Flores, an Affiliated Scholar at the Williams Institute, "it is obvious that LGBT people are at a higher risk of violent victimization, but the question is why." "Anti-LGBT prejudice at home, work, or school is one likely reason, and it would make LGBT people particularly vulnerable to victimisation in many facets of daily life."
For raising awareness regarding such acts faced by LGBT people we provide content in entertaining fashion, so please do check us out on EORTV app.

LGBT REFUGEES IN CANADA
In Canada, persons who apply for asylum on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity are known as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) or Gender and Sexual Minority (GSM) refugees.
Refugees are displaced people who are outside of their country of nationality and are unable to, or are unwilling to, take advantage of that country's protection because of a well-founded fear of persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
An individual must show they are at risk of persecution and are unable to seek protection from their home country in order to qualify for refugee status in Canada. These assertions may be made both after the person has arrived in Canada on a visa and before their departure. The majority of research on this group is qualitative in nature and involves asylum seekers who already call Canada home.

LGBT RIGHTS IN RUSSIA
Lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the Russian Federation face unique legal and societal obstacles. Since 1917, it has been lawful for same-sex couples to engage in sexual behaviour; nonetheless, homosexuality is still frowned upon by the majority of Russians, and neither same-sex couples nor the families they lead are entitled to the same legal protections as opposite-sex couples. There are no anti-discrimination safeguards for LGBT individuals in Russia, nor is there a category for offences motivated by sexual orientation and gender identity. Although transgender people are permitted to change their legal gender without undergoing sex reassignment surgery, discrimination against transgender residents may still exist because there are no laws that forbid discrimination based on gender identity or expression. As a psychiatric illness, homosexuality has been declassified.
According to recent polls, the majority of Russians are opposed to the acceptance of homosexuality and favour legislation that discriminate against homosexuals. Russia has always held very negative views on homosexuality. Larger cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg have been considered to have a vibrant LGBT community, while garnering international criticism for the recent rise in social prejudice, crimes, and violence against gays. Local governments have historically opposed gay pride parades; for example, the city of Moscow rejected 100 separate requests to hold Moscow Pride through 2012 despite receiving a fine from the European Court of Human Rights in 2010 for viewing it as discriminatory, citing a potential for violence against attendees.
