Thoughts on the Fear of AI

I read something interesting, mainly about the fear of a "robot uprising" that has stepped up recently with LLMs such as a ChapGPT and text-to-image generators such a Stable Diffusion. These technologies create things that make us feel they are intelligent, when it's really just a complex program (see: Chinese Room). But what other situation in human history is this like?

Slavery. We tragically kept other humans as chattel to do work for us, despite being intelligent. But since humans value freedom and have aggression built into our minds due to the innate evolutionary goal of competing to pass on genes, there was always the risk of our slaves rising up and killing us. Now, that same thought exists in the back of our minds about AI.

But what we call "AI" now, and even true AGI, won't have this built into their mind. Machines only have the goals we program it to have. There is no inherent aggression or competitive nature in software, only in humanity. There's still the cyclical technological unemployment we've been dealing with for thousands of years, and we can still have faulty or malicious use that leads to harm like all other technologies have, but the world of the Matrix is based on a fundamental misconception of how machine intelligence and human intelligence differ.

Hopefully we'll still have laws to prevent the mass theft of copyrighted content currently used in LLMs and text-to-image generators, and unions can protect actors from having their likeliness stolen and reused, but the existential threat from AI is, I believe, overstated.

RIP Twitter

I'd already left before for other unpleasant Musk actions, but it's nice to see more people using this platform. Perhaps its time I use this platform for long-form thought blogging, something I haven't done since the early 2010s.
