― Akwaeke Emezi, The Death of Vivek Oji
[ text ID: I'm not what anyone thinks I am. I never was. I didn't have the mouth to put it into words, to say what was wrong, to change the things I felt I needed to change. And every day it was difficult, walking around and knowing that people saw me one way, knowing that they were wrong, so completely wrong, that the real me was invisible to them. It didn't even exist to them. So: If nobody sees you, are you still there? ]

i need to talk about reply 1988
reply 1988 is probably my favorite drama, tv show, everything, of all. because everytime i think about reply 1988, i thing about my life and myself. this kdrama is that art that really touched you in the soul. because reply 1988 is about the friendships we have that we know is going to last forever, even though times changes. is about blood ties, but also about found family. it’s about growing up, finding yourself and your place in the world. teenage isn’t easy. that time when we have to deal with time passing by, with self-discovery, it isn’t easy. reply 1988 is not about romance or who’s gonna end up with who, it’s about how ephemeral youth is. and that’s ok.
reply 1988 is about that painfull nostalgia, that house you grew up, that neighbourhood and the friends you used to have. even though time passed, the importance of those things stays forever, and that’s what matters. it’s not about material sutff, it’s about the magnitude of memories.
“longing for that time and longing for that street, is not because i miss a younger version of myself. that’s the place of my father’s youth, of my mother’s youth, of my friends’ youth, it’s the place that holds the youth of everything i love.
in that landscape, where we won’t be able to gather like that again, i regret being unable to say my final farewell. to the things that are already gone, to the time that has already passed, i want to say a belated farewell. goodbye, my youth.”

“i persist and resist the temptation to ask you if one thing had been different would everything be different today? we were something, don't you think so? rosé flowing with your chosen family and it would've been sweet if it could've been me.”

“will you call when you're back at school? I remember thinkin' I had you, but I can see us lost in the memory, august slipped away into a moment in time, ‘cause it was never mine.”

i’ll be perfectly fine, then i remember:
“Longing for that time, and longing for that street, is not because I miss a younger version of myself. That’s the place of my father’s youth, of my mother’s youth, of my friend’s youth, it’s the place that holds the youth of everything I love.

and i just cry again

one of my favorite things about asian movies (and asian media in general) is the care taken when there’s food. like you can tell love was put in those shots. it’s not even fancy food a lot of the time, just normal people making food, because of the way the audience is assumed to understand that food, and making food, is an act of love, is a love language. how often food is used as a tool to convey a message, to symbolize something, rather than just part of the set, i think, is so satisfying especially because the actors themselves interact with it differently.
