First of all, y’all are in the denial stage of grief right now. Shut up and listen.

This show was gorgeously crafted. It is an important landmark in television history for a variety of reasons.

That being said: Izzy wanted to die.

Izzy didn’t just want to die at the very end when he told Ed, he wanted to die the entire season.

He probably wanted to die when he became a pirate. But he survived, again and again, and became a great pirate.

He wanted to die when he knew Ed didn’t love him, and after Ed abused him; he tried to take his own life with alcohol. But he survived that too. He did more than survive, he transformed. He transformed because of the love of his family.

He had to die so that Blackbeard could die, to teach Ed how to grieve, to give Ed room to live. He took the pressure of being Blackbeard off of Ed’s shoulders because he loved him enough to know what he really wanted: to just be Ed. Izzy and Ed were dealt incredibly difficult hands in life, but bloodshed wasn’t in their hearts, it was only a way of getting by, a way that - until Stede showed up - they believed was the only way.

I said he probably wanted to die when he became a pirate, but more than that, he wanted a pirate’s death. Now I don’t know about you, but I think he got a damn good one.

It was clear from the first moment he knew that he was shot that he didn’t want to be saved. He knew he would hold the crew up and put them in danger if he said anything, because they love him, they are his family, and would have stayed behind and fought the entire navy to make sure he was safe, even if they died. He did exactly what he told the prince makes a true pirate.

Maybe, when he was telling the prince what makes a true pirate, he was discovering it for himself. Maybe, in that moment, he finally felt at peace; maybe for the first time in his life.

An iconic role, a beautiful character arc, and like David Jenkins promised, his fate inevitably intertwined with Stede and Ed. Izzy is their guardian angel now, the landmark people will use to find the inn. He will always have a beautiful resting place at the top of a hill nearest the person he loved most in his life. Like Buttons, he has transformed, and in so doing, found peace.

So just let me enjoy this. Ok?

In a universe where piracy is coming to its natural end, where the theme that the leads' lives revolves around is looking like a past they'll think fondly of, someone like Izzy hands - who is the motif of that theme, THE pirate incarnate - he doesn't fit. He's done his job, he kept piracy alive for his entire life, he kept the man he loves alive as best as he could, he came full circle to realising that there was joy and beauty to be found. But he doesn't want to fish, he fucking hates fishing, an inn sounds even worse. He is piracy, it's all of him. He was done. Izzy Hands' death is a call to everyone that the days of piracy are over, that they should remember him as someone who kept it going, who did his best with the resources he had, who died a pirate's death exactly as he wanted.
