Specialist Practice - Linguistic Hybridity - Ruvix
Ruvix is a Romanian brand that do personalised products as well as t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, etc. Based in Bucharest they have gained a lot of attention due to their Romanian saying translated into English t-shirts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above are a number of examples from the many. They have taken a humorous turn on having the Romanians sayings directly translated in English which sound weird and funny with no sense of what they actually mean to anyone other than Romanians. This has made it easy for me to make a note of all the popular sayings that Romanians are used to using in their every day life.

Specialist Practice - Linguistic Hybridity- Romglish
Romglish is the mixture between Romanian and English. Looking at the history it's believed to have occurred after the fall of the communist block in 1989 opening the doors of the western society and globalisation.
As Ruxandra Vi艧an, professor at the University of Bucharest, writes in an article:
"Among the developments associated with globalisation is the use of English in a growing number of institutional domains. A heightening of the Romanians' familiarity with global English has taken place, English loanwords and code-mixing making their way into Romanians' language use."聽(Vi艧an,2016,p. 137)
At first the term Romglish was seen as a threat because people who lived through the communist era were opposed to outsiders. The internet was also a huge influence towards the spark of Romglish because it was predominantly English-language based.
As sociologist Claudia Ghisoiu stated on Radio Romania International:
"About 85% of the information found on the Internet is in English, and this is an effect of globalization. That is why around 1.5 billion people throughout the world speak English, at a certain level. In order to navigate on the Internet one needs to understand English."
Gaming was also a big reason why Romanians turned to English so that they can be understood in communication which was essential. Games like overwatch, where you play in terms to complete objectives. This game was so popular that it connected 30 million players from all over the world. In order to make this community strong, English was used as a lingua franca.
How the internet impacted Romanian Culture?
As technology advanced and more teenagers and people has access to phones and computers people spend a lot of time on the internet which assimilates not only English language skills but also cultural aspects from the American and British cultures. A good example of this is Valentines day. This celebration has been much more preferred over the Romanian version of Valentine called 'Dragobete'. Mostly because the American Valentine's Day is most popular and talked about across social media.

I have recently been in touch with my Romanian friends and have noticed that the use of English in their conversations have increased a lot over the years that I've known them. They started to mix English words and swear words with their Romanian vocabulary and got me curios in finding out why this is the case. I have discovered that as an example of globalisation a linguistic process has evolved in Romania over the past few years. Young people are beginning to make the use of English words in their Romanian sentences a new normal.
I stumbled over a great example presented as a sketch comedy to show how Romanians talk like in todays day. In the video there are two Romanian women who are gossiping by using English phrases/words mixed with their Romanian sentences and then we have their guy friend who is feeling so confused and feels like he wants to be cool and part of the conversation so he wants to be part of this new way of speaking by directly translating English sayings and swear words in Romanian which come off as super offensive or weird. Then he gets frustrated since he's the only one not using this way of interacting and even the waiter was used to mixing English with Romanian. Something that is considered "cool" for Romanian people.
I love how this is humorous to Romanian people and I personally find it very insightful. I feel like the words they choose to use in English that's chucked in their Romanian dialect is very picky and gives Romanians a bad habit since this is not conversational English. This is the example of the internet impacting Romanian society.

Specialist Practice - Group Tutorial
Mark and Emily advised me to experiment with photography and different prompts that could capture the sayings I am trying to present.
Experimentation with layout and type
They really liked the phonetics idea and I should start looking at how to present it.
Experiment with illustrations and have a sentence or two about what the expressions mean to inform the readers of when they are useful.
They suggested to sit down with people who well know English and ask what the equivalent of the Romanian sayings are in English because I could find something very similar and with the same meaning and sometimes multiple versions that will not be discovered on the internet.
This tutorial has helped me shape my next couple of steps. I should not get stuck on one idea and start experimenting to see if I can find other solutions that best fit. I will experiment through photography and illustrations to see which one will fit my target audience best because I am not designing for children but for adults and I want it to appear educational but also informal, something that someone will buy because they want to learn.

Specialist Practice - Linguistic Hybridity- Language History of Romanian and English
I have looked at the history of English and the history of Romanian and how they have came around to analyse certain similarities and differences that would help me form my decision in which way I present those two languages, expressions to people who aren't familiar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I highlighted things that were similar and it was interesting to find out that English is such a big mix of languages and that it actually part of the Indo- European language family. Both Romanian and English have connections to Latin. Although English in writing is different from the way it sounds and Romanian is a language that it's written the way it sounds but the alphabet is phonetically different.

Specialist Practice - Ideas Workshop
In this workshop we folded a paper in 8 pieces and on each one of them we wrote the first 8 steps of what we would do when first getting a brief. We then in groups of 4/5 went around and rolled a digital dice of 8 sides and said out loud what we had at the allocated number on our 8 piece sheet and went around the table with things that people would do next after that step. This for some was a specific brief and some just very general. I felt very connected to the Linguistic Hybridity brief from the brief breakdown workshop so I wanted to stick with it.

We then created sticky notes of

Specialist Practice - Brief Breakdown Workshop
In the Brief Breakdown Workshop helped to breakdown what the brief is asking of us so that we don't feel overwhelmed and confused.
Brief Breakdown Workshop:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this workshop we were given a brief for each group to analyse and had to answer those questions:
What kind of designer does this suit?
What do you need to do?
Answer this in 3 words, 10 words and 20 words
What problems can you identify?
What excites you about this brief?
This has personally helped me trying to simplify a brief and using simpler words made me understand what the brief is talking about.

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend?
Following my screen printing session which I really found so inspiring and engaging I came up with a few outcomes which I like and some don't like so much. I think it consisted of the type of paper which I have printed on too that next time I should take into consideration. I enjoyed the eagle because it represented soaring in control and I think in his habitat eagles are seen as dominant creatures who hunt their pray down and know when it's the right time.

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend? Evaluation
I found this week project exciting and a great way to practice experimenting and finding a point where you accept what you have achieved and allow others to critically analyse your work. Sometimes we get carries away on being perfect and always perfecting our work which makes us lose time and it's something I personally have struggled with. This practice has reminded me that it's okey to leave the things we create the way they are something and allow each other to move towards other pieces of experimentation so that more ideas will spark from them. This way we can keep developing our work by having consistent and multiple pieces of experimentation. I think in the following project I will use this exercise and try to give myself the chance to produce multiple experimentation considering my topic in the space of one week and see what I can come up with. Helping me achieve LO3 (Demonstrate ability in the creation, realisation, presentation and communication of work, alongside a highly professional approach to the organisation of working effort, time and project planning.)

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend? Presentations
Today we had to upload and present in groups our 6 pieces of experimentation and here are the ones I presented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have been told that my strongest were the screen printing, Illustration and Animation that I have created because they are some literal and some fictional representations of my words: control & soar. I've been told that my butterfly was the most unsuccessful because a butterfly doesn't have much control in the way it flies or is free.

Specialist Practice - Brief Breakdown Workshop
We were split into groups of 3/4 and given a brief where we had 20 minutes to answer the questions.
The questions were:
What kind of designer does this suit?
What do you need to do?
Answer this in 3 words, 10 words and 20 words
What problems can you identify?
What excites you about this brief?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found this exercise helpful because it made us pay very close attention to each word of the brief and identify what it asks of us by breaking it down in smaller words so that it also doesn't feel too overwhelming. I thought some had too much information that kinda of stirred me away from the requests of what we actually needed to achieve with this brief. We discovered that this briefs are actually from last year but I wanted to document it anyway because I thought it would be helpful for me to use this technique to break down the actual ISTD briefs that will be realised.

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend?
Since my words are control and soar I wanted to go out in the wilderness and analyse things in nature that bring the two words together. I discovered dandelions and got my friend to blow into them so that I can record the motion of the dandelion seeds gliding down in the air. I also got to see butterflies and I thought that the way their wings move could quite literally be a visualisation for control since they control their own wings to fly, however, the motion in which they fly and their habitat is quite free and very all over the place. When they fly they don't look like they very much control in which way they fly as it's a constant movement. I still enjoyed recording those so I wanted to add them. Since I can only upload one video per post I will post the videos separately.

Specialist Practice - Will it Blend?
Here I have attached some images that I wanted to experiment with in form of animations of a satellite orbiting around the earth to show the way we have created something to control within our atmosphere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have taken my images in Illustrator and used image trace to create an Illustrator file so it can upload into after effects as two separate assets.
Tumblr media
I have then followed the tutorial step-by-step to create the orbit animation.
I am not very used to After Effects but I have wanted to try and use it more this year and learn how to create animations because it will be useful for me. I think this experimentation also presents a very literal idea of control & soar. I enjoyed learning how to use a camera in after effects and get the satellite face towards it at all times to create the orbit effect. I also think it's faster creating small animations using After Effects.
