Now that I can finally draw Ren and Kyoko in a way that's satisfactory to me I can finally draw some art of this brain worm that's been living in my grey matter for like three years I call it the "never left kyoto au" aka if Sho had never decided to run away to Tokyo and caved to his parent's desire for him to marry Kyoko and take over the inn. Ten years into an unhappy marriage, a high budget film production requests to use their inn for a multiple month location shoot. Sho aggressively refuses at first because he hates anyone in show biz and ESPECIALLY Tsuruga Ren because he's bitter that Ren has the life he wanted for himself, but after Kyoko wears him down for a while about how good it would be for the inn, she finally convinces him on the condition that he will have nothing to do with the production and he doesn't have to talk to, look at, or even breathe the same air as Tsuruga Ren... Anyway turns out that's a good way to lose your mistreated wife to a burgeoning passion for acting and a man who's willing to love and cherish her.

Gonna take it upon myself as a reader to explain things that were left out for anime onlys-
Why does Miyo’s father turn a blind eye to her abuse by his second wife? Because Kanoko (Kaya’s mother) was his first love but he was given an arranged marriage to Sumi (Miyo’s mother) instead and promptly married Kanoko when Sumi passed- poor Miyo is getting the “it’s your fault I was kept from marrying my love” treatment from him 🙃 it’s not just Miyo’s lack of supernatural talents
Why does Miyo not eat any of the breakfast she made her first morning there? Because she wasn’t allowed to eat with her awful family/ her awful family was known to deprive her of food yeah seriously screw them all
What’s going on in Kiyoka’s mind during that first day? Read the light novels or manga because his internal thoughts aren’t really present so far and they add a lot to his character so if you wanna know more do yourself a favor and read the books if/when you can

I don't know anything about animation (truly, I am guided simply by the vibes), but it's hard not to appreciate how My Happy Marriage looks and how the visuals and the way things were directed (staged?) add to the aforementioned vibes.
Here are some of my favorites from Episode 2 (in no particular order):
The story of Miyo's sakura comb. I hate everything that's happening here but I love the storytelling in this one shot. It starts with Kanoko and Kaya's hands as they move away, the camera tilting down slightly to reveal Shinichi in the background as the doors close on Miyo.
Tumblr media
The Dutch angle itself already gives this uneasy feeling, but the scene development further builds on this in a way that (to me!) conveys a sense of betrayal. Miyo truly suffers from betrayal here, and since at this point she still had some faith in her father's affection, the reveal of her father just standing there and letting things happen feels like the final nail in the coffin.
Miyo after dinner with Kiyoka. I am a fan of well-framed shots, especially symmetrical ones like this.
Tumblr media
Miyo looks so small in a heart-breaking way as she thinks about how useless she is even in her new home. The doors are open before her; instead of being freeing, she looks trapped and boxed in, unable to escape from the frustration of her seeming ineptitude.
(This next bit is me truly and sincerely overthinking it, but I like the contrast between this scene and Koji's scene earlier in the episode:
Tumblr media
In both scenes, the subject is in the light and surrounded by darkness. However in Koji's scene, he emerges from the darkness and steps into the light, a depiction of his resolve to help Miyo in whatever way he could, even though he wasn't sure of what to do just yet. Meanwhile, the camera slowly backing away from Miyo gives the sense of her stepping into the surrounding darkness as she gives into her disappointment.)
Kiyoka's apology to Miyo. This is one of my favorite moments in the episode.

I really like the visual symbolism here: Kiyoka says a lot of kind things in this conversation, but these were always shown with him behind the protection of a screen. His face (at least part of it) only ever showed up when he said something harsh. Because even though he's a kind person, it's difficult for him to be so head on. And when there's nothing to physically protect him, he uses the barbs in his words to keep people away.
The soup shot. This scene pretty much inspired this whole post and thank goodness someone made a gif for this.
Tumblr media
This shot of Kiyoka raising the bowl to his lips is uninterrupted and focused because it's how Miyo watches him. We feel her anticipation, but also her dread. When I saw it, I thought of how else this scene could've been portrayed, but this long shot feels like the most effective way of putting us in Miyo's shoes even for the briefest of moments. Besides, this is also more interesting to look at for me compared to using interrupted but connected shots (which is what this scene would've been just by omitting this part).
