What do you mean by James didn’t cheat please explain

okay so bottom line: james couldn’t cheat bc she and betty never dated in the first place

disclaimer: the idea of james not actually being a cheater was inspired by another post on here, which i would link, but i can’t find it :(

i’ve been re reading the lyrics all day, and this is my conclusion:

a. to begin, seven is possibly loosely inspired by james and betty. they’re childhood friends to lovers au 🥺.

a1. cardigan (bettys pov) makes a reference to peter pan, and so does seven (“peter losing wendy”/“we can be pirates”)

a2. cardigan and seven also reference a shitty father (“leavin’ like a father”/“your dad is always mad [...] you should come live with me [...] and you won’t have to cry or hide in a closet 🏳️‍🌈”). this could either be interpreted as betty calling james out on her daddy issues or being like god damnit you left just like my dad, depending on whether seven is from betty or james’ pov

a3. in cardigan, betty says “i knew you, playing hide and seek” which is a childhood game, and in betty, james says “i hate the crowds, you know this” which idk gives me childhood best friends feelings 🥺

b. so, betty and james never dated, they were just probably childhood best friends who developed feelings for each other, but either ignored them or didn’t realize what was going on or hooked up w each other a lil (“hand under my sweatshirt, baby, kiss it better”) but never made it a Thing

b1. james probably thought her feelings were unrequited because she saw betty dance with a boy. if they were dating, that would not have been a problem because james would have known it was just a friend thing

b2. so james is all like fuck, betty has a thing for this boy, and she left me all alone to go hang out in the crowds w him :((

c. enter august. august sings “will you call when you're back at school?” implying that they don’t live in the same city and/or don’t go to the same high school

c1. i’m gonna guess james went off to live w a family member for the summer or something. and when she met august was all like “hey this just has to be a summer thing.” august saying “you were never mine to lose” wasn’t because james was dating betty, but because james was only going to be there for a few months

c2. (side note james was august’s first time (“are you sure/never have i ever before”, which probably added to her attachment to him 😔)

d. so inez finds out about james and august somehow, and her bitch ass tells betty that james dated this chick from her summer vacation. betty is all like fUck my feelings are unrequited and gets mad at james about it, and now james is like ?? excuse me?? bitch YOU were the one dancing with him 😒

e. okay so now we’re on to the song betty

e1. “betty, i won’t make assumptions about why you switched your home room, but i think it’s cuz of me” if james had cheated on betty, i feel like it would have been pretty obvious why betty switched homerooms?? james would have been all like “betty i WILL make assumptions about why you switched your home room and it’s bc i had an affair”

e2. so, i present again: james didn’t actually cheat on betty, they’re just dramatic, pining, stupidly jealous seventeen year olds, and inez can’t keep her mouth shut

e3. “i don’t know anything, but i know i miss you” this sounds a lot like some teenager that’s in love w her best friend and doesn’t understand it but is just like!!! come back!!

in conclusion: childhood best friends to fwb and/or adult best friends -> miscommunication over Feelings -> summer fling -> inez’s big mouth -> “wait hold on let’s just date tho”
