“I fear this will take a few minutes more for me to get out of all this,” Essek says, gesturing to himself as he stands again. “Formal wear here is somewhat complicated. If you want to start preparing for bed yourself I’ll understand. You’ve had a long day as well- you must be tired.”

“No- I mean yes, I am, a little, but- may I help you first?”

It takes Essek a moment to respond.

Formal wear like this in the Dynasty is intended as conspicuous consumption, a very visual reminder of elevated status- that not only can you afford all the actual clothing, but that you can afford to have someone help you dress; the layers are intricate, the fastenings aggravating and near-impossible to do on one’s own.

He’d used his Unseen Servant to dress earlier in his office at the Bastion, as he has for decades. He hasn’t felt comfortable keeping any regular servants as his career has progressed, and especially as other less-than-legal activities he’s been involved in have dug him deeper and deeper into treason. Aside from all that, the idea of letting anyone that close, letting anyone see him without all his many layers, and the armor of his mantle-

Unthinkable.

But-

When Essek turns in his seat to face Caleb, Caleb’s expression is open- honest, sincere with the desire to help. So far as Essek knows, Caleb doesn’t understand the connotations of Kryn formal dress, either in the actual clothes or the customs surrounding them. He won’t know that he’s performing the work of a servant-

-or a lover.

Swallowing around a suddenly dry throat, Essek nods.

“Yes, if you like.”

(also, I just have stupidly high standards. I actually wrote 43,745 words according to AO3, and I've got maybe another 1,500 not posted there. for some people that would be a great year. it just doesn't feel like one to me when I compare to the years I was writing 500k+ per year.)

Sorry for the late reply (tumblr mobile isn't great about notifications...) For number 9, I don't think there were really any alternate versions of this story...I'd written the preceding part- Burning Up- (the first work in Where Light Fears to Tread) without a real idea of where it was going, and Leach the Poison just seemed to follow naturally after.

As for number 11 (the part I like best about the fic), I think I really enjoy the visual of Caleb as being so well-trained that even when out of his head and disassociated, he's dangerous and he's fast. The body remembers it's job even when his higher cognitive function has checked out for a bit.

I was also a bit proud of thinking of using Armor of Agathis for a cooling measure to help keep the fever at bay :)

Thanks for asking! People feel free to send more...maybe it will shake the cobwebs out of my fic brain...
