The Masked Ball

When Draco had persuaded Hermione to attend the Black/Malfoy Samhain ball, she’d say hesitant would be an understatement. Yet here, she was begrudgingly dateless, having broken up with Ron months earlier. Though she knew, secretly, she’d have had to use an unforgivable to get him here. 

She’d managed to put Draco off politely enough. She had felt a slight pang at his disappointment. 

Then the following day, her best friend had cornered her at the ministry. She hadn’t been able to avoid it. 

“Please come, Mione” Harry had pleaded. As he looked lovingly at his boyfriend, squeezing his hand gently. Draco nodded. 

It had been his idea after all. 

Hermione had raised an eyebrow and tightened her resolve to just say no. 

“Fine, alright” she’d muttered.

After her disastrous Yule Ball in fourth year, she’d been in no hurry to repeat such an ordeal. 

Now, standing as she observed the ballroom, she nearly drew back in fear.  Her heart was beating painfully and her cheeks flushed. She knew tonight would be awkward evening of dance proposals she’d need to turn away. 

Thankfully, her cat mask covered her entire face perfectly. If she could only manage to remain silent, no one would realize it was she. 

Her breath caught as she noticed the beautiful women standing opposite her at the end of the room. Her gorgeous, long chestnut hair swept up and woven in a elaborate braid. A few stray curls, framing her mask which was completely black, simple. In contrast to her dress, Hermione bit her lip. 

The mystery woman, she wore a dress that hugged her beautiful her curves in a flowing dark cobalt. That as though by magic, sparkled with crystals that the candle light caught in perfect radiance. 

As if enchanted, Hermione felt herself unable to turn away. She stood like a statue frozen.
