One of Halloween recs from my last post! ⭐️Stalked by Shadows by @lissa_kasey_author I love love LOVED this book and it creeped me out sooo bad lol! So it’s perfect for a spooky Halloween read 👻 What an absorbing read!! Definitely one of my favorites from last year! All of the characters (not just the mains) were so fleshed out I felt every emotion that they did. The writing in this book is fantastic and had me on the edge of my seat multiple times! It's very rare that something in a book actually scares me, but let me tell you, the shadows in this story creeped the hell out of me and at one point I even had to put the book down for a minute because I was genuinely getting scared! There are a lot of emotions going around in this book: fear, joy, depression, PTSD, hope...and damn if Kasey didn't nail every one of them. Nothing felt overdone or exaggerated for dramatic effect. I felt Alex's fear and disappointment in himself at times, and Micah's determination to move on from his past. The only gripe I have is that I wish the characters dug a bit more into what's happening to them. Micah is constantly pushing for moving on and saying that truly understanding what happens to them doesn't matter in the long run, as it doesn't change the outcome. While true, I do hope that future books have them exploring more of the dangerous and creepy world they've become sensitive to. They might not need answers but I do! There's just so much to like about this book between it's excellent plot, cohesive writing, and wonderfully diverse characters. If you're looking for something a bit spooky but amazing then look no further! This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and a HFN sort of scenario but I was so impressed by the story I didn't even care. ⭐️Crimson Painted Snow by @author.brea_alepou ARC provided by @gayromancereviews This got a bit darker than I was expecting so be sure to take the author's warning to heart. This isn't a typical romantic revenge story where the vulnerable and cheated victim finds love and then decides that his future happiness will be all the revenge he needs. In Crimson Painted Snow, the MC Snoe Whyte takes his revenge quite seriously and doesn't let anyone (man, woman, or child) stand in his way. I loved the author's play on the characteristics of the 7 dwarfs from the fairy tale of Snow White, and Snoe's demon wolves all had very distinct personalities which I loved. I really enjoyed how Snoe first won them over, gave them names and a purpose. It was clear how important Snoe became to his wolves and vice versa. Their interactions also provide some much needed levity in the story (Wolly especially is adorable). The ending was both fulfilling and a bit disturbing. Snoe doesn't pull any punches to enact his revenge and claim what's his. I liked seeing him work towards his final goal and how all of the pieces came together. I will say that the final scene was a bit abrupt, and I would've liked an epilogue with a small time skip to check in on the characters. If blood, death/murder, and pain aren't you cup of tea then you should probably stay away from this book. It's not all horrible murder and darkness of course but it doesn't shy away from those aspects. 🎉THROWBACK THURS CONTINUED🎉 ⭐️Necropolis (Whyborne & Griffin 4) by @jordanlhawk This is my 2nd favorite book in the whole series! It reminds me of the 1999 movie, The Mummy, which I love. In fact, whenever I reread this book, I almost always watch The Mummy afterwards lol Our boys just can't seem to catch a break. In this book we leave Widdershins behind to venture out to the deserts of Egypt where Christine has requested Whyborne's help at her excavation site. I love everything about this book...I've always liked Egypt with its incredible history and amazing artifacts and this book provides me with all of that. Nothing like an undead Egyptian queen hot on your tail with her flesh eating monsters to keep a story exciting! In the last book, Griffin gave up his family (more like they gave HIM up) who gave him an ultimatum of them or Whyborne. Whyborne is still shocked that Griffin chose him. He feels a huge amount of pressure to make sure Griffin never regrets his decision and Whyborne hopes that he's worth it and is enough. He's afraid that Griffin has given up too much to be with him and may at some point in their lives hate him because of it. While Whyborne's self-confidence does grow with each passing book, he still feels insecure in his place by Griffin's side sometimes. One of my favorite things about this book is that Whyborne finally admits to being a sorcerer. I was so proud of him! For the past 3 books Whyborne has been adamant that he's just a scholar who dabbles in magic but is most definitely NOT a sorcerer. Whyborne finally comes to terms with his power and his abilities and proceeds to kick major ass with his spells. I also enjoyed Iskander's character. It was obvious he was smitten with Christine and I found it rather funny that he assumed Whyborne and Christine had a relationship and was jealous of Whyborne. 🎉THROWBACK THURS CONTINUED🎉 ⭐️Stormhaven (Whyborne & Griffin 3) by @jordanlhawk This third book in the Whyborne and Griffin series has our boys once again thrust headlong into danger. This book introduces the asylum, Stormhaven, which allows for some background info on Griffin's own stay in an asylum after his partner Glenn was killed and he left the Pinkertons. Poor Griffin...he takes a case where he ends up having to visit Stormhaven and it scares the hell out of him. One of my favorite things about Griffin is that he isn't afraid to show emotion, at least to Whyborne. He'll cry when he's sad and yell when he's angry. Having to go back into an asylum terrifies him but Whyborne is with him every step of the way. Whyborne is concerned about Griffin dealing with Stormhaven and refuses to let him go alone. After the events at Threshold, our boys have a stronger relationship and are determined to be there for one another in any way possible. Another problem is Griffin's family is in town to visit. Griffin has to make a choice as to whether or not he's going to hide his relationship with Whyborne from them, or tell them the truth and hope they love him enough to not let it bother them. Surprisingly enough, Whyborne's family doesn't really care about his inclinations. Well his brother does, but Stanford hates everything about Whyborne so he hardly counts. Whyborne's mother loves Griffin like a son and Whyborne's father could care less what his son gets up to as long as it doesn't cause a scandal. I really enjoyed this book and the obstacles it presented for Whyborne and Griffin. As always, the sex is hot yet also tender. Also, have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE Griffin's nickname, Ival, for Whyborne when they're alone? Cause I freakin love it... 🎉THROWBACK THURS CONTINUED🎉 ⭐️Threshold (Whyborne & Griffin 2) by @jordanlhawk Whyborne continues to be adorable and hilarious as the series progresses. Griffin is hired by Whyborne's father to investigate a disturbance in a coal mining town called Threshold. Although Whyborne hates travel of any kind and would prefer to stay at home in Widdershins, he accompanies Griffin and Christine to Threshold. Whyborne loses what little self-confidence he has when confronted with Griffin's ex-lover Elliot. How can poor "why-were-you-born" hope to compete with the handsome and dashing Pinkerton? While this provides some angst and complications to the story I'm happy to report is wasn't obnoxious and frustrating. I didn't have to wait long before Whyborne and Griffin actually talked about the situation and put any fears to rest. And while Whyborne still doesn't understand how Griffin could possibly love him, Griffin does his best to show his lover that he does in fact love him more than anything. Christine as always is a welcome addition to the story. While she and Whyborne have always been friends/colleagues, they're quickly becoming like brother and sister with the way they care for one another. I loved seeing Whyborne so out of his element in this book. And even though he's in a completely new environment, he still acts gentlemanly and proper and is his normal awkward self. One particular scene where he finds himself in the company of a group of whores had me laughing so hard. Whyborne is the only man who would tip his hat to them, address them by name, buy them a drink and then have a normal conversation at the table. He's just so precious... With a combination of action, mystery, romance, and magic you can't go wrong! Ah what can I say about Dr. Percival Endicott Whyborne? He's the most awkward, intelligent, and adorable character I've ever read. Whyborne starts out as a stuttering, bookish scholar who hides away in his basement office just wanting to be left alone and do his job. This works for most of his career at the Ladysmith Museum, at least until he meets Griffin Flaherty. Griffin is a private detective and needs Whyborne's help decoding a book that he's found in one of his investigations. This book is set during a time when same sex relationships are not only frowned upon by society but are in fact illegal (early 1900's?). Not to mention falling in love with another man would probably get you accused of having some sort of devil inside of you. Needless to say Whyborne keeps a tight lid on his urges towards other men. Griffin on the other hand has no problem with subtle (or not so subtle) flirting with other men. What started out as a way to get close to a potential suspect quickly turned into a beautiful love affair. Both of these men have issues of their own but they're each caring and affectionate lovers and provide the other with a safe haven. This relationship is ultimately what drives the story. Both of these men had certain expectations of how the other was going to be. They assumed the worst of each other. ⭐️Heir to a Curse by @lissa_kasey_author I really enjoyed this standalone. There's a bit of a mystery, some fantasy elements, and a fairly angst-free love story. This book would make a fantastic movie or series, using emotional flashbacks to portray Zach's memories of their past lives. I loved Zach's character and it was nice to see his devotion to the house and shrine he inherits. I also really enjoyed Xiang's character, and the changes that we can see in his manner based off of Zach's limited memories. His exile was pretty horrible (and undeserved) and I was rooting for them to break the curse. I do wish there were more flashback scenes, though. Especially for some of the other lives besides that all important first one. There is one aspect of the story in which I'm not sure how I feel about it, and others may view it differently. This story takes place in the state of New York during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, all the characters are very safety conscious: wearing masks, practicing safe social distance, etc. I haven't decided whether I like this aspect or not...I'm leaning more towards the "too soon" column. Books are my escape. Especially during a time when it feels like the world is falling apart. And to have the virus show up in a book I'm reading, honestly gave me a touch of anxiety. When the characters couldn't hug or get close to their loved ones I felt too close to that situation and it upset me a bit....I'm sure many readers will be able to enjoy this story despite the mentions of the virus but for me, including a crisis that we're still currently suffering through was a bit too soon. That being said, my overall enjoyment of the story was not poorly effected by this. ⭐️King’s Rising (Captive Prince Trilogy #3) by @c.s.pacat I'm so glad I decided to reread the first two books (after not initially liking them years ago) and then read this one. Otherwise I would have missed out on something truly wonderful. The last book ended in a horrible cliff-hanger where Damen was revealed to be Prince Damianos...and now we see the consequences of that reveal. Laurent and Damen have been growing closer this whole time but at this revelation, with everything out in the open, their complicated relationship takes a few steps backward. The strain in their relationship affects them both and they must come to terms with who they are and what they really mean to one another. When they finally reunite and are intimate, that sex scene was even better than in the last book! Damen continues to be incredibly tender as he takes his time and works at bringing Laurent pleasure. Damen is such an incredibly kind man and I love the honesty and care he shows Laurent. He really sees the man under Laurent's mask that he shows the world. And Laurent really makes you feel for him. He clearly has little to no experience with genuine kindness and having Damen constantly provide it really wears away at Laurent's inner walls. I really loved how much the characters cared about one another. It's incredible how far they've come. And after they reconcile, they don't hide their feelings from each other or the men around them. I loved how much they wanted to keep each other safe. And how far they were willing to go to do so. The ending confrontation with the Regent was fantastic and Damen's little speech to the council about Laurent made me wanna cry! This is, without a doubt, the best and most well-written enemies to lovers and slave/master story I've ever read. It's incredibly well-paced and believable in terms of the characters' relationship development. The plot was amazing! Pacat had me overcomplicating my theories and ideas and then second guessing them over and over. I seriously can't recommend this series enough! ⭐️Prince’s Gambit (Captive Prince Trilogy #2) by @c.s.pacat And that ladies and gentlemen is how it's done. That is how it's fucking DONE! This book was even better than the first and I loved every second of it! Damen and Laurent both go through some huge character development as they slowly learn to respect one another and form a strong relationship. Laurent is such a fascinating character and it's so hard to get a read on him. Because he's so hard to read, he's the character I want to know more about the most. He changes a lot in this sequel as he gets farther and farther from the Veretian court. Actually, it's not so much that he changes but you get to see his hidden self more. He has every reason to hate Damen but no matter how hard he tries, he only finds bravery and goodness in Damen. As for Damen, I really loved his development as he comes to realize that not everything in the world is as black and white as he once thought. And that his beloved father may not have been as great a man as he believed. Damen comes to understand that he was young, arrogant, and naive. Now he knows the kind of person he wants to be. The world and politics in this series continues to be amazing! The action and intrigue keeps you on the edge of your seat as you bite your nails in anticipation of what will come next.
