"Lucy. What you brought me is cold fusion. It's limitless energy - and we can built our own world. It could be a better world, it could have clean medicine, and water, and power, but for everyone. Because when VaultTec bought my research, they made it propitiatory - so only a trusted VaultTec Minion can activate cold fusion. All I need is for him to give me the code."

yeah idk i think some things about the fallout show are cute but more often than not it seems to entirely miss the point of its own world and reduced themes in ways detrimental to the story of the franchise and just makes some really odd careless decisions in general. it has some good black comedy but also lame self aware comedy that reeks of embarrassment at taking itself seriously, and the extremely artificial scaffolding meant to establish mysteries and twists that we aren't invested in because we don't know anything about the people involved is the very opposite of 'fresh.' the makeup on both ella purnell and walter goggins is cowardly, and all that production value still boils down to ugly greenscreen soundstages and small sets.
so yeah obviously it's a big hit

That post that's like "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy" really blew the door wide open for me about how common it's become for a character's emotional intelligence to not be taken into consideration when writing conflict. I remember the first time I went to therapy I had such a hard time even identifying what I was feeling, let alone had the language to explain it to someone else. Of course there are plenty of people who've never been to therapy a day in their life who are in tune to their emotions. But even they would have some trouble expressing themselves sometimes. You have to take into account there are plenty of people who are uncomfortable expressing themselves and people who think they're not allowed to feel certain ways. It also makes for more interesting conflict to have characters with different levels of understanding.

apparently in the subtitled and native audio versions it is made explicitly clear from the start that the woman mahito's father is marrying is his late mother's sister. this is a normal and traditional japanese thing to do especially for the time, but in the english version this is hidden from the audience and gradually revealed throughout the movie for whatever reason, which is an insane choice because it feels like it's meant to be a twist instead of the premise for the story
folks are saying a lot of nice things about the boy and the heron/how do you live and they're true, but. good golly does it feel like hayao just spent way, way too much time and effort on act 1 and the first arc of act 2 and then realized they were out of time and needed to wrap things up real fast
