anyway turns out one of the most important moments in my life was when one of the 8 roommates i had when i was 18, someone who i interacted with maybe half a dozen times, looked me straight in the eyes and told me in a few sentences how to make soup, so here it is

"pot on heat, put in oil, chopped onion and chopped garlic, fry a bit. add chopped vegetables and spices then fry a bit, then pour in water with bullion and boil for a while."

since then ive added optional steps and details to this process but i never forgot the original and it's saved my life repeatedly in the past not-so-few years
