This psychedelically pink and shining yellow glow worm belongs to the beetle family Lampyridae. But Microphotus angustus females never develops into an adult beetle form. They remain in this wormy body until die, unlike their male and other firefly counterparts. They appear in North America around late May and early June. . 📷 : Ken-ichi Ueda/iNaturalist/CC-BY-4.0 . . What?! Bananas don't only come in yellow?? 😱 🌸 🍌 These small wild bananas (Musa velutina) are found from Assam to the eastern Himalayas. Not only are these bananas pink, but they're also fuzzy and even edible. They have tooth-cracking-ly tough seeds though. . 📷 : David Monniaux/Wikipedia . . Horseshoe crab blood is key to making a COVID-19 vaccine, but the ecosystem may suffer. . For drug companies, it’s a crucial resource for making human medicines safe. That’s because these animals’ milky-blue blood provides the only known natural source of limulus amebocyte lysate, a substance that detects a contaminant called endotoxin. If even tiny amounts of endotoxin – a type of bacterial toxin – make their way into vaccines, injectable drugs, or other sterile pharmaceuticals such as artificial knees and hips, the results can be deadly. . Every year, pharmaceutical companies round up half a million Atlantic horseshoe crabs, bleed them, and return them to the ocean— after which many will die. This practice, combined with overharvesting of the crabs for fishing bait, has caused a decline in the species in the region in the past few decades. . . Via: @science.feed . . Incredible details of a lava lake bubbling up a dome fountain were captured by scientists studying the eruption at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (in an area only accessible to researchers). This bizarre formation occurs when lava rapidly oozes from a constricted vent, in this case, beneath the surface of the lake. . 📸 : M. Patrick⁣/USGS/@nationalparkservice . . Whoa! Peep this shot of some prehistoric plants on Mt. Kilimanjaro. . Groundsel plants can be spotted above 4260 meters (14,000 feet). Being that high up comes with temperatures that dip below freezing during the night. Groundsel plants have adapted to thrive in this climate by evolving to store water in the pith of their stem. When temperatures drop they close their leaves by way of an action known as “nyctinastic leaf movement”. They also produce a natural “anti-freeze” and self-insulate with withered and dead foliage. . . Maria Goeppert Mayer changed the field of nuclear physics by explaining the structure of atomic nuclei, a question that had evaded scientists for years. . Atoms consist of a nucleus made up of nucleons - protons and neutrons - surrounded by electrons distributed within shells with a fixed number of electrons. Goeppert Mayer was particularly interested in atomic nuclei in which the number of nucleons corresponded to full electron shells – so-called ‘magic numbers’. These type of nuclei are especially stable but no one knew why. . Goeppert Mayer was intrigued by the problem which she saw as a kind of ‘jigsaw puzzle’. She developed a model in which nucleons were distributed in shells with different energy levels – the nuclear shell model. The puzzle was solved and she went onto receive the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics. . Photo: Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library . . The arctic reindeer is the only mammal whose eyes shine a different color depending on the season. . In summer, when the sun is bright, the eyes are dazzling golden. .
