I've been thinking a lot about why people are so mad about Azriel's bonus chapter and the biggest thing seems to be that they read his outrage as feeling somehow... Entitled to Elain. And I can see that, I guess, if you completely disregard literally everything about him lmao.

This is a man who has always been the outcast. He was abused and locked away as a CHILD because people were afraid of him. Do y'all realize how damaging it is to be so thoroughly othered from the time you are born? It has been so violently inprinted into his mind that he doesn't belong, that he is other, that he is somehow lesser, because of how he was treated as a child. Because of how some people STILL treat him! Cassian earned the begrudging respect of the Illyrians but none of them want anything to do with Azriel even now. He struggles, constantly, with these feelings. It's obvious in everything he does.

Cassian and Rhysand love him, dearly. There's no doubt about that. They know he belongs right there in Velaris with them, they know without a single doubt in their hearts that regardless of blood he is their brother.

But he doesn't. That damage runs deep. He will never, never feel fully totally secure in his worthiness to be associated with these people who he loves so much they may as well have put the moon in the sky for him.

Now imagine that everyone around you has scorned and hated you your entire life, save for two people. Two people who you could see yourself in- outcasts, bastards, unwanted, abused. And you grow alongside them, you watch them flourish, and together you become the most accomplished bastards in history.

And then the universe itself unites them both with beautiful, powerful, amazing mates who love them just as much. Sisters for your brothers whom you adore so deeply.

And then the universe itself seems to tell you that you are not worthy of your own mate. You are not worthy of the third sister.

You are not worthy because you do not belong. You do not deserve your brothers' love and you do not deserve to be a part of them.

You will never belong. Those people who burned you, who beat you, who locked you away, were right. You are a monster. You do not belong.

My HCs:

- As a kid Elain used to sneak into her father’s study to look at all the books and items he acquired on his travels. She would use a candle to read books about far away lands and their cultures and spent time memorising historical events to ask her father about.

- Elain at one stage attempted to learn a couple of foreign languages and would converse with anyone around her that was not monolingual. She started to talk to friends, the staff, and other visitors to the area in their native tongues as well as translated anything she could get her hands on.

- One of Elain’s most treasured items was a map her father got for her from the continent. Before going to bed she would memorise all the cities and landmarks on the maps. She asked her dad about doing a merchanting trip with him when she was all grown up.

-Elain was super academic as a kid and aspired to going to university on the continent. She dreamt of becoming a polyglot and learning how to trade so she could help her father run the family business.

elain is such a mood around azriel. one speck of dust/flour on her shirt? needs to be changed. hair coming out of her braid? fix that shit. 

i feel like azriel probably would love elain if she was never wore anything but a burlap sack but elain and azriel are both so nervous around each other. not to mention, azriel and elain really only see each other at family events. azriel isn’t just hanging out around elain–because the scent of her mate bond (which–lets face it–elain hates) makes azriel upset and angry. 

i can’t imagine what azriel is going through with elain right now. maybe lucien is chilling with vassa and elriel are living in the town house. maybe they’re happy and untroubled. maybe when elain does needlepoint and she sticks her finger, azriel is there to kiss it better. i hope they learn to be less nervous around each other 🥺
