The Raven Cycle: wdym we are going to fall in love while looking for dead welsh kings
The Mortal Instruments: “Oh no she’s my sister, oh no I love her, why why why”
Six of Crows: A master thief constantly fools everyone but most of all himself and his feelings

All for the Game: Gay college athletes somehow think sports is more important than trying to escape the Mafia

I would like to take the time to appreciate some of Percy’s most savage moments; feel free to add on:
— The “best wishes” note with Medusa’s head
— “Do you have anything to declare?” “Yes; I declare this is stupid.”
— “You want to gargle with toilet water again, Clarisse? Close your mouth.”
— The “go chase a donut” line
— “On the bright side, now Jason and I both outrank you, Octavian, so we can both tell you to shut up.”
— That scene where he tells people his stepdad is giving away free appliances from his store on LIVE TV WHAT AN ICON I LOVE THIS BOY

the entirety of the lightning thief really is just Percy, Annabeth, and Grover fighting over the use of one (1) singular brain cell isn’t it

the ruin & rising ending was perfect for alina’s canon character. for most of r&r, alina reiterates that all she wants is a peaceful home after this is all over. that’s exactly what mal gives her, and what she gets with rebuilding the orphanage. also, an alina without her powers isn’t valuable to the darkling or nikolai, but she is to mal. throughout the series, mal hasn’t really shown reverence to alina’s power, reiterating that he loves her without it, and loved her before. he could be happy with her even if she’d never gained her power, and that’s clear for three books. now, when alina loses her power, it’s a loss for her, but she doesn’t lose mal because of it. he knew her - and loved her - before, and does after, too. he can be happy with her as she is, and what she gives him, regardless of power, whereas what she gives nikolai and the darkling is largely rooted in her power, and who she is with it. so when she loses her power, and wants a simple life to live, mal is the choice for her. he can give that to her and love her like no one else can in that moment and for the rest of that life.

One of my favorite parts of the Hunger Games was how, in the beginning, Katniss was jealous amd resentful of the townies for not having to work in the coal mines. Then, over time, she realizes they aren't the true enemy. Then she sees the other district kids as so much better off than she is, because at least they don't come from district 12. But then she realizes they aren't the enemy either. And then she hates the other victors, before realizing they have all been exploited just as much as she has. So the enemy must be the Capitol citizens, who benefit from the exploitation of the districts, right? Wrong again. They are just uninformed and pampered people who have been kept in the dark about the true horrors faced by the rest of the country. Most of them, when push comes to shove, are perfectly willing to help the war efforts.
And slowly, over the three books, all theses separate factions of downtrodden people start to see each other as allies instead of enemies, and that is what propells them to eventual victory over the true enemy, the government that tried to pit them against each other. Just fun, totally fictional things to think about that have nothing whatsoever to do with our current life.

[ID: A two paneled image. The first panel, labelled “Stories where the protagonist chooses romance over friendship”, shows someone reading an extremely large book. The second panel, labelled “Stories where the protagonist chooses friendship over romance”, is the Lisa Simpson plate meme. Lisa Simpson looks down at an empty plate. End ID]

I do not think we shall find it easy to leave Tashbaan. While the Prince had hope that you would take him, we were honoured guests. But by the Lion’s Mane, I think that as soon as he has your flat denial we shall be no better than prisoners.

I’ve been thinking about how the Tower of Nero resolves the plotline with Apollo and Zeus- or how it doesn’t resolve it.
I saw so many posts over the years, and particularly leading up to this last book, about how eager people were to see Zeus get his comeuppance. Theories like how he should be overthrown by the other Olympians, sent down to be human himself, or just have Apollo really ream him out. I myself daydreamed endings where such things occurred.
Then we got to the end, and none of that happened. Zeus did his whole “congratulations, Son, you did me proud and clearly my punishment was for the good of us all” thing, and Apollo just. Decided it wasn’t worth it. That Zeus wasn’t going to change, and trying to do so was just wasting his time.
And I think this message is so important? Because while Meg had a beautiful plotline of defeating her abuser through the support of others and freeing her siblings in the process, the sad truth is the world doesn’t always work like that. Sometimes your abuser has all the power, and society isn’t willing to take it from them. It’s such a human thing to want to see the person who hurt you face justice or admit they did you wrong, so you can get your closure. But that’s hinging your recovery on the actions of the one who hurt you in the first place. In the end, what you can control is yourself.
Apollo phrased this beautifully when he said,
You cannot change a tyrant by trying to out-ugly him. Meg could never have changed Nero, any more than I could change Zeus. I could only try to be different from him. Better. More… human. And to limit the time I spent around him to as little as possible.
So yeah, Zeus doesn’t get his comeuppance. He remains in charge of Olympus, feeling a bit bad but still convinced he’s right, and Apollo accepts it. Because Apollo has found people who truly care about him, and has resolved to be a better person and break the cycle of abuse he has been perpetuating his whole life. He’s found his home and family, and he’s found himself. And that’s a victory.
