Watching the downfall of Wattpad is as entertaining as it is sad, tbh.

I have spent a lot of my life in fandom, starting off with a site similar to fanfic.net, then moving on to Wattpad, and finally landing on Ao3 (there was also a time when all the translated fics were coming from a site whose name started with a Q? I think it's not around anymore, though. And most of the "older" people in my fandom had started off with LiveJournal), but this is the very first time I'm seeing someone defend so callously a platform that's clearly going to hell.

The moment the mods on that similar-to-fanfic.net started going on power trips and striking down users and their stories for no reason, people began calling bullshit, both on the site and other places (at the time it was trendy to have Facebook author pages). The site went from having a team of seven mods to one of four to, as of today, a single one plus the owner of the site. Why? Because the mods were rude, didn't listen to the authors and readers, and people rightfully started being upset and leaving for better places.

With Wattpad... it's like observing someone stuck in an abusive relationship and constantly coming up with excuses as to why it's better for them to stay.

The purge happened and they were mad for about two days before they started defending the decision to implement AI to delete (random) works, with a crescendo of accusations towards people who complain their stories were deleted: "I'm sure you can contact the Wattpad Ambassadors and have your story reinstated, don't worry!" to "Surely you did something wrong" to "Why do you want pornography on this website??? Won't you think of the children????"

They're also arguing that the CEO is in the right for deleting those pesky NSFW stories, because otherwise advertisers won't buy ad spaces, and no one wants the Wattpad CEO to go hungry.

Now the site just put up an announcement about how they're going to pull the feature that allows users to DM one another, something that apparently plenty of people relied on because it helped them build friendships. As they did with the purge, people were devastated, then started coming up with half-solutions, then outright attacking anyone who dares say it was a shit idea.

I don't think I've ever seen people brigade so strongly for a site that's clearly falling apart.

That's amusing. People are generally loath to move, but Wattpad has an unusual level of loyalty.

My cats have this meow that means "please come with me to fix this" after which they'll lead me to the problem in question, usually a empty (or 'empty') food bowl or a closed door they want open. They look at the 'problem', they look back at me, clear message.

What fascinates me is how this illustrates what they percieve as being in the realm of my 'power.' I control the food, I control the door, sure, but my cats love to sit on the balcony in the sun, and it has happened plenty of times that on a rainy day they come get me, go to the balcony and show me... the rain. "Please fix this" they say. "Please get rid of the wet"

"Silly kitty," I say, "I can't control the rain." I then walk into the shower and turn on the rain.

I hate when people recommend me based on tags on AO3. I don't know how often I have to say this, or why everyone assumes everyone else reads fandom blind, but some of us really don't care to read fics from media we don't know.

The big takeaways from the Conan drama for me are: 1., it's still going, 2., there was a plot, I think? 3., the plot has progressed, in some way but 4., the kid is still kid-sized so it can't have progressed very much, considering I got to adulthood faster than Conan did by aging naturally.

This leads to my natural conclusion, 5.: it's still not worth getting into because this shit is going nowhere and I like complete narratives.

I've seen a lot of buzz on social media about how they perceive Hank and Connor's relationship. I can understand that many see him as father and son, a question that is totally valid, since everyone has their expectation of how it evolves as the story progresses and the decision-making in the game. However, what I fail to understand is the fury behind it.

Bro, one of Connor's first social interactions in trying to get Hank to like him is rapport, to become partners and create a friendship. It all depends on the decisions you make, but did you really see this scene?

Can someone look me in the eye and tell me that it's not immensely suggestive how Connor winks at him? The look to the side with the smile? The tension?

Hypocrisy is thinking that there is not something behind it, even if it is something “bromantic”.

With the Wattpad purge, a little discussion started in a group I admin. Started by me, mostly, because... is it wrong of me to expect Wattpad refugees to search and learn by themselves how to use the Archive?

I mean, the answer to that is "no" when you have common sense and know that it is bad to expect everything, as we in Mexico say, peladito y a la boca.

It all started because is SO NOTORIOUS that a fic was uploaded by a Wattpad refugee, at least that in the Spanish speaking community. What tells it is: fandom and ship between parenthesis in the title, tags without spaces and with the # at the start, list of "warnings" in the description as well as a disclaimer of some kind, most commonly "plagarize prohibited".

Someone posted a screenshoot of a fic like that and said "you know this is a wattpad refugee LOL". Other people also laughed, but one person said "don't make fun of it, just teach them how to use the site". And I responded to that person with a "why are you putting all the responsability on ME and to the people who know how to use it, but not on THEM?"

In other words: why do yo want me to teach someone who didn't even bother to search or even imitate? And I'm even more bothered by that kind of comments of "just teach them" because my gay ass has posted at least 50 posts about HOW to use AO3 and a 34-part tutorial with images and really comprehensive descriptions, for those who don't know a slick of English.

It's just so easy to say "just teach them" than expect lazy people to do their homework.

The thing that made laugh was other person responding and say "people are shy to search and ask". Ask I get it, though social anxiety has to be fighted... but shy to USE a search engine???? That's BS.
