Rich fruity decadent stuff, gobs of gorgeous bubbles tickling you all the way down with a heady cream rising to the top, overflowing your tenacious grip onto a happy trail of apples and strawberry ice cream and pecan pralines gushing from an eclair center of cracklin baked goods. Ridiculous salmon pink with no weird sediment--not even crystals--no beer-bro cidery shit, no low-rent hazy unwashed faults, just rich fruit and spicy zang and clean, clear sailing. Raise your hand if you've had CHOW. Everyone's had Chow! I mean if you haven't you've missed out on one of the great original comfort foods on the Central Coast. If you don't know what Chow is you need to put down what you're doing and go to one of the restaurants in the @bluemangoslo Group and order Chow. @novorestaurant and @robins_restaurant for sure have it on the menu always and I feel like maybe I've seen versions of it at @mintandcraft ...not sure if @luna_red has it or not. Probably not: I don't know how you say Chow in Spanish. Wonder how many bowls of Chow NOVO has sold in its life? #noodlelife #novorestaurant @downtownslo #chowchow (at Novo Restaurant and Lounge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDkddF8R-/?igshid=1ofpzymofpzlq

Sunday lunch 2-5 with a 3-top so I ordered a bottle but then @_coif and @onojjjono opted for medicinal cocktails leaving me HIGH & DRY with a bottle to myself. My first option muscadet was out, my backup riesling was sold out, so opted for this beautiful Alsace pinot gris from @famillehugel which worked perfectly in the dappled sunshine by the creek in downtown SLO. @samantha_payette_welch they showed me that trimbach and I was like you give me 50% off and I'm all over it and they were like.... Beautiful wine beautiful conversation about restaurant gossip and corvid and evolution and the midwest and christians and the velvet-shorts-gold-chain Guido whose fuckin breakfast burrito at 3PM didn't come with the pico de gallo on the side so GOD DAMN IT IF YOU CAN'T MAKE MY BURRITO RIGHT I'VE BEEN WAITING HERE 45 MINUTES TO EAT WITH MY FAMILY I'M GOING TO COME BACK THERE IN THE RESTAURANT AND MAKE IT MYSELF I had to tip for made it all worthwhile. #sundayfunday (at Novo Restaurant and Lounge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDsHzBZHuqZ/?igshid=1hbog6necz40k

Squeaked into Momotaro Ramen finally as it approached early afternoon and I was really worried, as I keep hearing stories about the noodles selling out at this place. NO RAMEN FOR YOU, NEXT! But I didn't miss out thank dog. I ordered the standard Momotaro ramen, first thing on the menu because honestly it contained everything I would have put in my ramen if I were making it à la carte: pork, scallions, eggs. ramen had a nice wavy texture still firmly intact, not gummy around the edges, but crisp and good. eggs a perfect *set*, pork you could literally suck through the pap in your front teeth--ridiculously tender--and the broth a viscous texture. This is in the brand new Paso Market Walk public market of course, which has a couple of empty spaces but by-and-large is pretty much rocking and rolling. It's a nice all indoor market which suits the weather in Paso Robles nicely both winter and summer. Of course we're eating outside currently, but there's lots of shady grassy spots on the beautifully landscaped grounds. There's a creamery and a beautiful bakery (all desserts though--didn't see any bread) and an olive oil tasting place and a very nice wine shop with plentiful glass options. Let's see what else. Couple other things can't remember right now. If you know, tag them here. Anyway, very nice #ramen and I will be back. @momotaroramen @pasomarketwalk #momotaroramen #pasomarketwalk #noodlelife #noodlesoup #pasorobles (at Momotaro Ramen) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmhSw4lDTZ/?igshid=1q42hf4zcsoeu

Holy crap, so I didn't post yesterday. Relax everyone. I'm okay. I didn't move away. I don't have the corvid. My dog didn't die. Some days you know, I just go out to eat and drink some wine and keep my mouth shut about it. IMPOSSIBRU!!! Okay so here's what I actually did yesterday afternoon: First I tasted through all 3 of those cheap 2016 bordos that have been sitting here gassed and pumped since what? Monday - Tuesday?. Very surprising... They were actually feeling a lot better--all three of them--than they did when I opened them and initially decanted. I'm not saying they flushed out into anything amazing and wonderful, and they were all three very drinkable from the get-go, but I was happier about them tasting through them last night. Then, still reeling from the criticism of posting that 2008 Brander Reserve the other day and not saying anything about it, I decided to scribble some notes down for posterity's sake. So those are up on wine1percent.com and IG if you scroll back. It had been gassed and pumped since Sunday and hadn't changed really a lick. Then I wanted something to cleanse my palate so I blew into a bottle of Bevela White Lotus Grenache Blanc which is one of my favorite wines they make. Of course, saying something like that automatically insinuates they make some wines I don't like. bwahahahaha well... "don't like" is a very strong word. Then headed out the door for dinner, grabbed something for corkage and Greg Linn's magnificent Rim Rock Syrah was smiling at me from the shelf. I didn't intend to make this a Sana Barbara evening but that's kind of the way it turned out. Los Olivos District on the Brander, Camp 4 on the Bevela and oh wait a minute: despite the myriad of Santa Barbara information on the rimrock, that Vineyard is actually in Arroyo Grande, SLOco. Anyway, it was a long evening of wine and now you spent a long portion of your life reading this. I hope your day improves. And remember, Make the world a better place: punch influencer in the face. Maybe #fridaypoems will become a regular feature. ☑️2008 @brander_vineyard #cabernetsauvignon Reserve SYV 13.5 ☑️2019 @bevelawines #grenacheblanc SYV 12.5 ☑️2006 #greglinnwines #syrah 14.2 (at California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDl_LywnV7p/?igshid=3kvdq067rcjr

Okay so first of all, Madeline's is open for lunch. This is great news, and one of the best things to come out of covid, because as most are cutting hours, cutting staff, cutting menus, or just even flat-out closing, here's a restaurant that decided to EXPAND in order to stay alive. And it's a very very good move for not only gourmets around here, but francophiles as well. Because now we have ANOTHER full on French Bistro that's completely accessible all day. Whereas before this was a tiny little obscure restaurant--dinner only--that nobody knew about, now there's a beautiful outdoor dining area all day and an excellent staff PLUS: a menu that ticks off all the French classics. This was the octopus, and I have to say this is the closest thing I have ever had stateside to one of my favorite dishes in Nice: suppions à la Niçoise. I inhaled this MF thang, and had me wondering if I could talk them into making it with squid for a trip down travel-memory lane. Several Italian chefs around town have tried to replicate this dish for me over the years and have come up way short. But this NAILED it. Take a trip up to Cambria for lunch, and add Madeline's to the list of local places to get your franch on: ➡️Bell's ➡️Moon Over Avila ➡️Brasserie SLO ➡️Bistro Laurent ➡️Madeline's!!! #bistro #cambria @madelinesrestaurant (at Madeline's) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDkC5QLF0lR/?igshid=1u4evfkum7b2a

Pale garnet. An effusive nose of fresh fruit and floral, all manner of plum and light berry, a deep-seated savory spice, leather and warm stones, a plushness of wood and age far out-playing its stated vintage. Rich and decadent with minimal vine and greenbrier, all brown sugar and frothy currycomb, vanilla and wet linen. There’s a handful of cool kids making the best CF in California and this guy is one of them. Monterey-SCM-Paicines seems to be the sweet-spot trifecta on this grouping. Getting the Central Coast’s best hidden vineyards to crank out the finest soft-shouldered examples of this grape seems to be their forte. WATCH FOR THEM. You want names??? Just pay attention! No crazy cru-bojo herbaceousness or prickly stem on this one. Warm and ripe from attack through finish seems to be the name of the game on this version. It feels plump enough to be basking up near the 14-oh mark, but I feel this winemaker would not produce that. The color and delicacy of mouth-feel both tell me considerably lower, but NOWHERE is any green spriteliness or bitter zang. It is full, plush beautiful cherry, watermelon, and strawberry throughout. Solidly-girthed middle, acid visible but integrated down into things so well as to define *balance*. A back-rub of tannin rasps into the finish gingerly, everything still high-as-a-kite on round, full fruit. An absolutely gorgeous wine, maybe not *edgy* enough for hipster-geek or low-intervention nazi, but colored so delicately inside the lines of power and richness, it could be someone’s TURNING-POINT wine on Loire-style CF. 2015 @ibrandwinery #CabernetFranc Bayly Ranch #Paicines AVA San Benito Co. #centralcoastwine #California 12.7 https://www.ibrandwinery.com/ (at I. So I did a thing. Instead of minding my own business and sticking to the ridiculous Cubanos over and over like a good boy, I tried yet another sandwich I'd never heard of on Jorge's menu at Milanés Cuban. This is *pan con lechon* which I have no clue what means except that we are back to pulled pork and swiss with generous slathers of mustard. I really really like this one. I almost like it better than the cubano. I love the mustard. So this leaves basically one sandwich I haven't tried. Not counting the several cubano variations, there are basically four sandwiches on his menu: 2 pork and 2 beef. Based on the absolute 100% track record so far I'm going to have to try it. I literally cannot decide between the three I've had so far which is my favorite. As much as it pains me I do think I may like this one better than the cubano. @milanesthaitakeout #milanescubancuisine #morrobay #cubano #panconlechon #pulledpork #sandwich (at Thai Bounty) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDeot-alj6X/?igshid=13iecfivi7wgn

Been hearing so much good about the 2016 Bordelais I grabbed a few cheapies. Haven’t had one yet. Allegedly a very full-and-balanced vintage, with more structure than 15. I’ve been hearing even in the very cheap wines, they are lush and ripe and structured–FAR more so than years with chubby round wines or those with ridiculously tight wines. So here we have the perfect vintage. An almost California-esque vintage bwahahahahaha. I’m gonna get in so much trouble for that. But these aren’t big–and plentiful–100-pointers from 16. Fuck that noise. These are all sub-30 bucks: and from three different classifications: a satellite, a straight Médoc, and a dumb little superieur. Oh I'm sorry. Did you want me to spoon-feed you my notes like I do every night? Sorry not enough room. wine1percent.com 2016 CHATEAU BERTIN Montagne St. Emilion 70/30 ME/CF 2016 CHATEAU HAUT FAVEREAU BDX Superieur 60/30/10 ME/cab/CF 2016 CHATEAU CAILLOUX DE BY Medoc 50/50 cab/ME (at Bordeaux, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDcttBaHUnK/?igshid=9p187ei2ejgn

I didn't blog last night and it weirded a bunch of people out, so I'm throwin a little Sunday special out for the fans: This isn't going to be a normal review, but I want to reiterate THREE exciting new Paso Robles Cabernets that only the cool kids have heard about. It seems like with Paso--on a national or international level at least--the same old brands get trotted out over and over and over and over: the Justins, the Daous, the L'aventures *yawn* I mean it gets so boring and yet there are kids up there pulling the stops out on small production bottles, sourcing from the some of the best vineyards--ridiculously well-sourced fruit, NOT CHEAP--and not sparing any expense in production and oak programmes. You'll never see these on supermarket shelves, probably not even wine shops, *possibly* a couple restaurant placements in LA, they are going to be winemaker-direct--the boxes probably even packed by the winemaker! Why did I pick these 3 for commonality? They share gorgeous packaging, expensive bottles, rich succulent fruit and gobs of structure, beautiful oak and all surfacing in the past 3 or 4 years. A couple of these come from youngsters in long wine-growing and making history and one of them a culmination of lifetime interest. NONE of these are a 'checkbook winery' or vanity labels, labeled shiners or bulk juice. They are all the result of personal hands-on hard work and perservation. None of these are cheap. These aren't playing around down in jLohr, Eberle, Ancient Peaks and Broadside territory so get those bargain stars out of your eyes. Plan on spending a healthy portion of a $100 bill on each one. But that's Paso Robles today boys & girls. Local kid all growwed up! You KNOW I'm always poking around in dark corners looking for exciting new brands, so get familiar with these before anybody else does. 🍷@hotm_wines 🍷@dustynaborwines 🍷@twfermco and for those of you capable of processing direct links, here's my last three reviews on these: ➡️http://wine1percent.com/2020/07/26/hearts-abound/ ➡️https://wine1percent.com/2020/04/11/shining-star/ ➡️https://wine1percent.com/2020/05/14/forward-never-straight/ (at Paso Robles Wine Country) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZeMjoH_pP/?igshid=1082lw33ue4lj

These are fun little wines. I've had a couple different varieties he makes over the years and they're really nice solid inexpensive wines that I see being sold a variety of places so obviously marketing pretty well--even Vons and Albertsons has them. The Petite Sirah is really soft yummy plump version and the Syrah is a pretty classic Paso Robles style that shockingly would fit in really well with some of the far more blingier allocated versions that cost three times as much. Well-fruited, extremely ripe, a spike of acid, well-made wines cloaking the heat nicely and a good bit of tannin on this one all hidden behind an appropriately briary nose. This is the winemaker at Robert Hall and I think he also makes wine in Texas. Met him a couple times, nice guy--salt of the earth--and when you see the price on these, you'll be an instant fan. 2016 @bradyvineyards #Syrah #pasorobles 15.0 #libbeyglass http://www.bradyvineyard.com (at Brady Vineyard) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDVG6pEnvX9/?igshid=1ejhfoe3d2oiq
