The famous “Never Gonna Give You Up” is a very synthesizer heavy song. Upon some research I found out that the synthesizer used was the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and a Linn 9000 was used for the drums. There were many other synthesized sounds that I couldn’t specifically pin point but they are generally harmonic. For example, there’s one sound that had a violin/string like timbre.

Sampling sometimes seems to come off as ‘stealing’ but personally, I think there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using another artists work in your own. I believe that as long as the listeners have access to the source of the sample.

Here, Kanye West samples Bound by Ponderosa Twins Plus. It starts at about 0:35. From then on, the sample maintains pretty consistently with Kanye rapping overtop.

This final was put together by myself and Darren Renman using GarageBand. It was all done using midi and piano roll. We collaboratively put together chords and structure to make it an overall nice sounding piece in f minor.

I used the sound of a locker opening and closing, added some effects to it and some melodies and harmonies. Finally, I came up with this using all midi and piano roll.

This is the sound of a locker opening and closing. I found that this has a very percussive feeling to it and could work great in a track.

I played around with a bunch of synthesizers until I found the ones that fit and compliment each other well. I built a little structure throughout this piece that reveals a bit of drama once the drums drop and come back in.

The sounds in this track were chosen very specifically so that the eeriness carries on throughout the entire piece. This song gives off a gloomy and spooky type of feeling which is exactly what I was going for. The creaking door at the end especially helps which I recorded in my friend’s dorm bathroom.

This is one of my favorites, if not, my absolute favorite song ever. The energy and the general composition of the song is just so impressive and breath taking. It’s a song that is both fun to listen to and perform.

I generally dislike this song, and honestly most of Megan Trainor’s music because I find her style cheesy. The production is also very “cookie cutter” and overused.
