August 6: Dracula
“She is steered mighty strangely, for she doesn't mind the hand on the wheel; changes about with every puff of wind. We'll hear more of her before this time tomorrow.”

One thing in Lord of the Rings I’ve found extremely relatable lately is how the hobbits react to apocalyptic horrors by focusing on the mundane details of their day.
“Looks like we’re on a hopeless journey into Hell in the middle of a world-ending event where everything we know and love will be destroyed. What are we going to have for breakfast today, Mr Frodo? :D”

Small art gift for @admiraldora who chose the awful teens as a motif. Had a lot of fun looking up their scenes again and figuring out their overall appearance and outfits.
JM always being in awe of Gideon's biceps are the cutest and funniest moments. I can only imagine how often she she gawks at Gideon in secret and inspects her own muscles in front of the mirror in the fourth's room.

There's a certain liminality about Artemis' character, a certain inability to fully belong. His interaction with (and indeed, eventual acquisition of) magic marks him as being ill-fit for the human world, but this alienation from humanity does not imply he slots neatly into fairy society, either. Similarly, his genius estranges him from children his age, yet despite all his intellect, he can never escape the reality that he is a child, and thus cannot yet lay claim to the world of adults. Even his name is linked to this idea of mutability; he bears the name of a female goddess despite being a young boy himself. He exists in the borderlands of identity -- between magic and the mundane, between childhood and adulthood, and between masculinity and femininity. Consider what he is compared to the most: a vampire. After all, what creature better embodies the idea of existence in the overlap than a vampire, a being trapped in the transient space between life and death?

favourite thing in the world is when the pages of a book go all soft and yellowy and the edges are slightly fuzzy and rounded. these books couldn’t give you a papercut if you tried they’ve been loved too much. they love you too much

if you like a piece of media that is good eventually youll more or less run out of things to say about how good it is but if you like a piece of media that is objectively pretty mediocre but also somehow deeply compelling thats how the demons get you

The latest disgusting tweets from JKR have me thinking that there's probably a discussion to be had about authors using the Holocaust/Nazis as a model for their own Bad Guys, without doing any meaningful research or understanding the extent of what Nazism is. As if it's a hypothetical form of evil that doesn't exist anymore, except as a useful shorthand for communicating that someone is Bad.
And to be clear, I'm talking about JKR not doing her research when she first wrote the books, before she went right down the TERF/Nazi/white supremacist pipeline. Nowadays I know she doesn't actually care about research.
