you’ve been driving straight for as long as you can remember, but keep passing the same house, with the same man sitting on the front porch.

you are told not to look at the animal carcasses on the side of the road. they blink at you in the corner of your eye

it is summer. it has always been summer. it will always be summer.

cars veer through lanes of traffic, racing to get nowhere faster than everybody else. you look over when they pass you; there is no one in the driver’s seat.

your skin is slowly charring under the sun, and the humidity is suffocating. “what a beautiful day!” somebody remarks. they say that every day.

there is a small gas station on the side of the road that is always empty. you have never seen anyone inside or outside. faded signs beckon passersby to come in and try the hotdogs. new and improved, with healthier ingredients! they never tell you what the ingredients are.

the workers in the strawberry fields have glazed over eyes and red-stained hands. nobody is sure if it is strawberry residue or blood.

do not swim in the ponds. you can never be sure of what is below the murky surface.

the sound of desks shifting in the classroom above you filters through the ceiling. there is no classroom above you. you are on the top floor.
