   “My dear boy.” Reptilian skin suddenly shifts, a not inconsiderable measure of relief colouring the chameleon mask of an almost spectral entity; each movement precisely calculated, every muscle relieved of an exact level of tension a microcosm of the galaxy in his grasp, with worlds dancing on his strings. Ones soon to entangle this boy even as he rushes further into his hold. The kindly politician offers a smile, one that is not as broad as those usually reserved for greeting the famed Jedi, and does little to hide hapless fretting. “Thank you for coming so quickly. I understand their worry, but given the delicate nature of this matter, I thought it best to keep things private for now.”

   He gestures to a seat across the desk before lacing aged fingers together, releasing a weary sigh, no longer pondering if he is, perhaps, overdoing it a tad as he might have a decade ago. “Some rather distressing information has been brought to my attention and I need someone I can trust. And you are the only Jedi I know I can trust completely, Anakin. In fact, in the midst of these dark days, I dare say that you are the sole person in the Republic in whom I am certain I can place my total faith.” Palpatine leans over slightly, the slits that hide the shadow behind alarm and an affectionate gaze looking Anakin in the eye. “And I did not want to speak of this with the council, or any other Jedi, because there is a possibility that a traitor lies among them.”

In this one, he saw … potential, but also a key failure. It happened, the Emperor knew that much. It was an inevitable consequence … believing themselves better than what they were. To falter and no doubt fail in their quest.

It was amusing as well as it was disgusting.

   History weighs upon his shoulders as oppressively as the gloom of the shrine. It might have been intimidating had he not already mastered both. Time and darkness are but instruments, their currents flowing between his fingers to be guided and manipulated as he sees fit. So when the spectre coalesces out of the ichor-like fog, a mass of umbral bile perhaps pitiless enough to rival the maw of his own heart, he simply lifts his coruscating gaze and smiles.

   “I care not for your approval,” the shadow speaks, echoing back through eons of predecessors laying the steps to its ascension, their whispers encircling this perversion of a consecration. “It means nothing. I have come to claim what is mine. Your secrets. Your power. What knowledge you possessed that was lost to the ages.” A gnarled hand reaches out, mottled by the inner blight bleeding through. “I have secured the Sith’s place in history. Now I must maintain it. Give it to me.”

   Excitement glistened within star-maddened gaze. Active cognition rose , urging caution as he proceeded with dictation. ❝ I have done everything you’ve requested. Under my command , my achievements — Project Stardust grew from a mere speck of dust into concrete reality. The evidence speaks for itself. I’ve achieved it all , despite contrarian oppositions. ❞

   The dark’s patience is infinite, but here and now, it must contend with having met the one who may yet achieve what no other has and successfully wither it away. Wreathed in long shadow cast by Coruscant’s setting sun, the Emperor withstands the prattling tirade; a speech conjured at only the merest prompting. But it is to be expected—this one has long sought an audience with a higher authority, that much is clear. So he sits, patiently, wondering if this soul (so prosaic to be as unremarkable as his deceptively unblemished white garb) might arrive at his point before running out of air. He certainly appears driven to prove it possible with no influence through the Force on the shadow’s part. But at last silence once again descends on the chamber, and the stirring abyss at its heart takes a moment to relish the opportunity to deprive this underling of delusions he has indulged in for far too long.

   “You insist Project Stardust has reached completion because of your efforts.” Voice is as neutral as expression; granting Krennic nothing, until such a time as when making displeasure evident will be necessary. “Others maintain it is in spite of them. You and I are fully aware the work has been beset by numerous delays, to say nothing of interference from rebellious entities and other irritants. And yet of those, I cannot recall any which were dealt with directly by you, Director.” Crooked fingers steeple and topaz gimlets narrow, glinting from within the event horizon of a cowl. “Victory is only promised to those willing to fight until it is certain. You did not avail of any chance to present your account of events and oppose your naysayers. I shall grant you that. And I tire of posturing and unsubstantiated claims—dispense with them. Here and now, tell me how you would utilise my Death Star to further the aims of the Empire, and why I should permit you any greater role in such a destiny. Or all you will have achieved here is presenting confirmation that your part should have ended long ago.”

Room is granted for political hackles to lower here, for he hardly need fear this child lashing out with verbal riposte or devastating barb. And of course, they are allies. “But you hardly need me to tell you that, my lady. By all accounts, the direction the monarchy is taking under your guidance has met with overwhelming approval.” Eyes of mundane mask narrow a degree, concern bleeding into tone of good-natured camaraderie. “Unless there is something causing you to feel otherwise?”

The intent behind the mask is not fully clear, and that is troubling. This machine is of Sidious’ making; its every thought and action made manifest only by his permission. Is this cloud Vader has placed in the path of his senses merely out of fear for when the master discovers the depths of his failure? For his apprentice’s sake, it need be only that and nothing more. “You are the Empire’s fist, Lord Vader. A mighty blade to be brought to bear against our enemies in great, fell swoops. But I also thought you capable of more delicate work.” Entropic topaz meets hard coal of mask’s lenses, but Sidious knows his gaze is meeting the true eyes within the shell. “How unfortunate that it appears I have misjudged you. Now our enemies have gone to ground, and the hunt must begin again. Are you simply a hindrance now, capable of nothing but wasting my time and letting victory that is assuredly yours slip through your grasp?” Worlds have been culled for less, my friend.

History had a funny little thing of having expectations. Failure lined his own past; to kill a Jedi. In turn, the younger cut him in half, but he survived. He always survived.

Darth Maul was a survivor. 

He always was and always had been. It was simply a matter of precision on how well plans would go. On how he could not just adapt, but exceed his own assumptions about the situation and any expectations.

Currently, he found himself in between a rock, a hard place, and no doubt pain. He already could feel it; the torture for his failures and turning his back against the other.

Deep gulp was taken in and anxiety was quelled. No running, Sith didn’t run, but what was he now? He really didn’t know.

“This is,” focus, he needed to focus, “unexpected.”

   A deeper shadow separates itself from all others cast in the chamber; impenetrable, cold, wisps of miasma seething from cracks in the vessel encapsulating the abyss. Its dead-eyed stare, incapable of feeling such ailments as pity, observes the wretched thing before it with disgust, offence that such a being would cling to this poor excuse of a life in an affront to all other things that walk and eat and breathe. Currently the husk enshrouded by the shadow’s even horizon is only doing the latter, and part of the umbra ripples in excitement at the thought of cutting that short.

   But instead Sidious merely sneers, picking the Zabrak apart with his gaze. “For both of us, my former pupil.” Robes whisper as he steps closer, crooked fingers curling with anticipation. “I had not thought you would break so easily.”

   No doubt that has stirred the heat of defiance from within the furnace of Maul’s rage. Sidious pays it no heed; whether it is in the present moment or those yet to pass, he is still speaking fact. And if nothing else, he will take great pleasure in alleviating this creature of whatever delusions he may still cling to about the reality of things. “I told you that pain teaches many lessons, and holds many gifts for those with the strength to take and wield them.” Pale lips split to reveal a grinning maw, and the yellows of his eyes flash with hunger. “Do you know which it is I am about to bestow upon you now?”
