May 25, 2019: Toronto Raptors clinch first Eastern Conference title in franchise histor The moment people usually remember most from the Toronto Raptors' 2019 playoff run is Kawhi Leonard's bounce-bounce-bounce-bounce buzzer-beater against the 76ers, and rightfully so; It's arguably the greatest shot in franchise history. But the team still had to win two more series against arguably the two best teams in the league to get their hands on the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The first of those two series came against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. The Greek Freak had been living up to his name all season, averaging 27.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game on his way to the MVP award. HAPPY MoM DAY ..A day to honor mothers has existed for as long as, well, there have been mothers! Festivals honoring mothers in ancient times were often tied to gods and goddesses. The Phrygians held a festival for Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods. The Greeks and Romans also honored the mother figure of their gods. Even today, an important festival in India, Durga-puja, honors the goddess Durga. During the Middle Ages, people would return to their home or “mother” church once a year during the middle of Lent. (Back then, children would often leave to work at the tender age of 10!) Historians theorize that it was the return to the “mother” church that led to the tradition of children getting the day off to visit their mother and family. In 16th-century England, this celebration became “Mothering Sunday.” Children—mainly daughters who had gone to work as domestic servants—would be given the day off on the fourth Sunday of Lent to return to their mothers and home parish. The eldest son or daughter would bring a “mothering cake,” which would be cut and shared by the entire family. Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters assuming all household duties and preparing a special dinner in honor of their mother. Sometime during the day, the mother would attend special church services with her family. Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday; the fasting rules were relaxed for that day. (Often, the gospel for the day was about Jesus feeding the crowd with loaves of bread.) The traditional cake, called a Simnel cake, is a fruit cake with two layers of almond paste. The cake was made with 11 balls of marzipan icing on top, representing the 11 disciples. (Judas is not included.) Traditionally, sugar violets would also be added. In the United States, three women were most instrumental in establishing the tradition of Mother’s Day: Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Ann’s daughter, Anna M. Jarvis. Whether you’re a competitor or a gym rat, your commitment to training may be called into question with your beloved gym being closed. With the competitive season hanging in the balance and social distancing in effect, what are you doing to stay in shape and be prepared for the moment you are back in the gym? I mentioned in a previous blog about home workouts. Suffice it to say go check out YouTube home workouts and you’ll see a plethora of options, regardless if you have any gym equipment And you are the person performing the actions in the visualization experience. For example, you can visualize having the best physique and conditioning and standing on centre stage on show day. Prior to the visualization, you want to create a script in your head, i.e., going through the poses (quarter turns, mandatories) to provide direction while visualizing the event. It also lived up to its billing as a “celebration of life,” with speakers sharing personal insights and stories that highlighted the best of both, often drawing smiles and laughter from the thousands in attendance at Staples Center. Perhaps no moment drew a bigger laugh than the final speech of the day that came from Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe’s teammate on three NBA championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers. Shaq shared a story from his early days playing with Kobe where he learned an important lesson on Mamba Mentality. O’Neal immediately flashed his trademark smile as cameras cut to Magic Johnson falling over with laughter. O’Neal also used his time at the podium to give insight into his and Kobe’s relationship during the tumultuous days that led to the breakup of the dynasty they built as O’Neal eventually left the Lakers in a trade to the Miami Heat.
