Proposal

Keithtober ‘21 day 23

Sometimes Lance acts weird–usually when they’re on the eve of a huge battle or on his first day as co-leader of the Blade or during Garrison conferences. Usually it’s just normal anxieties, nerves, self-confidence issues. But he has never acted weird when they go out on a date–not even on their first date which could probably be summarized as a train-wreck at best since they almost got arrested on a random alien Vegas-like planet that had seemed like fun at the time. 

But today, as they walk towards whatever destination Lance planned for them, Lance is almost a shell of what he usually is. His eyes, unfocused, remain set ahead as he gets captured by his thoughts. Every few minutes or so, he will pat his left jacket pocket, checking to make sure whatever’s in there is safe. It’s distracting. He’s also not babbling, which has to be the number one sign that something is wrong.

Having enough, Keith says, “You look nervous.”

“I’m not nervous,” Lance replies immediately, shoulders straightening from their original hunched posture. His hand whips out of his pocket, flexing by his side as he looks everywhere but at Keith.

Keith narrows his eyes, gesturing to Lance’s left side. “You keep patting your jacket pocket every five seconds.”

“I fidget all the time; nothing unusual.” Lance waves off his concerns. He still won’t look at Keith. So Keith presses on, more force in his words.

“Yeah, but you’re doing this deliberately, not just because your hands need something to do.” He grabs Lance’s arm, stopping him from continuing to walk and tugs him around until he faces Keith. Their noses sit inches apart.

“So you think you’ve figured me out all of a sudden?” Lance challenges, smirk on his lips.

“We’ve been dating for three years and have known each other for longer, so yeah.” Lance’s three extra inches of height do nothing to intimidate him. He lifts his chin, staring directly at Lance. “You’re nervous because you’re hiding something. Admit it.”

The staring contest only breaks when Lance huffs, spinning away. He drags a hand through his hair, fluffing it up. He sets his sights back on Keith in a flourish and points at him. “God dammit, when did you become so observant?”

“You’re just not as stealthy as you believe. And don’t think for a second that I don’t realize you’re still stalling.”

Closing his eyes for a moment, Lance breathes in deep, a steadying breath, and his hand once again reaches into his jacket pocket. “Alright, guess we’re doing this right now,” he says. Keith opens his mouth in confusion, but Lance holds up his other hand as a stop sign. “You’re not going to ruin this, sweetheart. Even if you’ve become Sherlock overnight.”

Slowly, he pulls out a black velvet ring box and lowers himself down on one knee. Keith’s breath catches at the sight. His hand covers his gaping expression. Looking up at Keith with a soft expression, eyes glimmering and, despite earlier, voice steady, Lance says, “Keith–” 

Keith sinks to his knees and kisses Lance. He cups Lance’s face, fingers twirling into his short hair, as he draws him impossibly closer. Lance gasps against his mouth but quickly wraps his arms around Keith. “Yes,” Keith says when he pulls back.

Lance laughs, knocking his forehead against Keith’s. “As much as I love that answer, I’ve been planning this speech for months, so you’re going to listen to it.”

“Bring it on.”
