Moving on to a new adventure
Thank you for being part of Kaiā€™s journey. Iā€™ve grown both as a person and as a writer as Iā€™ve explored his life, his personality, his family, his heart for adventure, and his love. Iā€™m happy I had a chance to write him as much as I did.
May your adventures be many and joyful as you pursue your own future and passions. From both Kai and me: Thank you.

Iā€™ll Say It Again
The Doctor was sitting in the Tardis, the quiet hum of her machinery filling the air like the breathing of an impossibly large animal, slow and deep and constant. The gentle glow of the pastel multicolored lights played slowly over the ceiling, reflecting off the ceiling above, and giving a soft feel to the room. The Doctor was in a rare quiet moment, sitting on the edge of the bed in the bedroom, and staring down vacantly. He wasn't tired, exactly, not physically, butā€¦ there was an empty space in his chest, that ached when he was too still. It was aching nowā€¦
The Doctor felt the Tardis brush his mind. She was gentler than usual when she wanted to get his attention, and he sent a wordless question back in return. She didn't answer, but he felt a sudden urge to go see Kai's room. He realized it was partially his own, and partially a subtle support from the Tardis, coaxing him down that pathā€¦ He stood, stretching, then put his hands in his pockets and made his way through the Tardis to where she had shuffled Kai's room, not too near, but not very far at all. He wandered in, stepping in just a few feet before stopping, at a lossā€¦ Everything was just the same, he'd kept it all. It was just like when Kai was traveling with him, and might step back into the room at any momentā€¦
"Hello, Doctor."
Thatā€¦ that voiceā€¦ The Doctor froze, the blood draining from his face. He knew it couldn't be, knew it, feeling afraid but compelled at the same time as he turned to faceā€¦ Kai. Kai was standing there, and the Doctor stood immobile too, not understanding. Kai was standing there, speaking to himā€¦ The words entered the Doctor's mind as he stared at Kai, his face impossibly close, undeniably himā€”but Kai's next words made him feel weak, his sick certainty confirmed.
"If you're seeing this, it means I died."
Kai's smile was wide but somehow humorous, with an embarrassed edge to it. His face was soft and round, at ease, and jarringly at odds with the words he was speaking. He paused briefly, an introspective look fleeting across his face before he blinked it away. His smile gentled into a sad but still warm one as he spoke. "It was the most likely thing, really. Humans live much shorter lives than Timelords."
Kaiā€” No, the Doctor thought, the image of Kaiā€”turned his body and gestured to the desk as his voice continued, "I wrote everyone letters, you know about those. I hope you can get them to the right people at the right time. You're good at that." His brief smile was dazzling and charmed, and he continued, his voice a little curious. "I wrote you letters, too. I wonder if you've read them yet?" His smile got wider and softer, growing lopsided on his face as he looked the Doctor in the eyes. "I wanted to do more than just letters for you." He gestured, arm waving. "Thatā€”it's a start, but it's nowhere near enough. I asked the Tardis to help me do this, to record this image for you, this moment. You can replay it whenever you want, if she lets you." Kai looked up at the Tardis, then back down to the Doctor a moment later, his voice gone wistful. "I hope we had a lot of time together." He gave a short, warm laugh. "I already have so many happy memories with you. We've come so far, done so much." His grin was infectious. "I can't even begin to imagine all we did, in the end." He tilted his head, resting his hand briefly against the Tardis. "And now you have new adventures waiting for you, you and the Tardis together, and maybe a new companion, too."
Kai's face was open and happy, and the Doctor found he couldn't look away, couldn't stop this, didn't want to, even though he'd never imagined the Tardis had something like this hidden awayā€¦ Kai tilted his head to the side, and the Doctor felt, impossibly, like Kai was really looking at him, here and now. When Kai spoke, his voice was soft and sincere, gently urging. "Take care of yourself, okay? Be safe. Be happy." He waved a hand out and away. "Go see the universe, and enjoy every minute." His smile widened, a light blush reddening his cheeks as his voice softened further, lowering. "I love you, Doctor."
The Doctor maintained eye contact, mesmerized, swallowing hard. Kai said quietly, with a light humorous tone mixed with tenderness, "Now, hold still." The Doctor did, unconsciously holding his breath and staring wide-eyed as the image of Kai stepped forward, still speaking. "I asked the Tardis to help me do this, too. I hope it works." Kai stopped just before him, looking at him searchingly. "She even gave me an image of you to talk to, for this. You look just like yourself, though you're so quiet." Kai's grin was still gentle, teasing without a sting. "She knows you best of all, I suppose." Kai quieted, staring into the Doctor's eyes for a long moment, and the Doctor stared back, still not speaking. Kai reached out his hand, slowly, raising it to head height, and the Doctor had to fight not to react when he felt the solid warmth of fingers caressing his cheek, undeniably Kai's, blunt and warm, warmā€¦ Kai said it again, low and tender, his voice soft. "I love you, Doctor, and I always will." His thumb rubbed gently over the Doctor's cheek, almost aliveā€¦
Kai turned his head suddenly, then turned back with an amused smile, speaking in a more normal tone as he dropped his hand and stepped back. The Doctor had to force himself not to start forward after the touch as Kai spoke. "You're calling me. I can't let you catch me at this." Kai's smile was warm, almost as warm as his fingers had been on the Doctor's face. "You can ask the Tardis for this whenever you want, Doctor. I asked her to save it and show it to you when you needed it." He nodded to the Doctor, giving a lopsided smile, the lines of his body relaxed and happy. "I have to go, now. Take care, my Doctor." He tilted his head and gave one last lopsided smile before the image faded, leaving the Doctor suddenly alone again, bathed in the warm hum of the Tardis and the echo of a voice he knew very well.

Kai, Alone
Kai wipes his forehead, splinters and dust smearing across the sweat there as Kai blinks at the stinging moisture trying to creep into his eyes. His eyes, they burn; he's been awake longer than he wants to think about, longer than he really should, but still he carefully lifts the next piece of wood in place and shifts it precisely, lining it up perfectly with the pre-drilled holes in preparation for fastening it together. Several finished cabinets rest on the floor behind him, still unwrapped; he'll check them all, doing last touchups before packing them carefully, when he finishes the last ones. But for now he grabs his level, checking that the structure is even and square.
Kai's muscles ache, his hands near to cramping. He's thirsty, too, but he knows without looking that everyone in the house will be asleep, that if he goes in now he's liable to wake at least his father, which he doesn't want to do. He's already begged off two meals, pleading necessary speed to finish this project before the end of the week. In truth, he's far ahead of where he needs to be. But I can deliver them tomorrow, if I finish, he thinks, straightening tiredly before reaching for his driver, resting near him on the floor. They'll be happy to have them early. And then I canā€” can do something else. His mind stutters awkwardly over the what, clearing it uneasily and quickly sweeping it into a dark corner of his mind before he bends again over the cabinet, power tool whirring loudly.
Several hours later Kai straightens for the last time. His back is complaining at him, and his mouth is pasty-dry, sticky and sour with long-delayed thirst. The cabinets are all finished, double- and triple-checked, and made perfectly sound and perfectly level, each piece carefully and precisely slotted in place. Kai's hands are nicked and scraped, his arms dusted with curly wood shavings and grit, his forehead smeared with grease and his eyes tired but relieved that this task is done. He blinks and looks up at the sound of the door opening, eyes struggling to focus on the figure there. His heart skips a beatā€” but, "Dad," he says softly, his voice welcoming but with an oddly sad note, warming quickly so as to hide the betrayal. "Hi. Good morning, I guess." He looks over at the small windows; the light has indeed grown, and he lifts a hand to rub the back of his neck tiredly, his sweat-stained shirt sticking to his body uncomfortably.
Dan's eyebrows go up at the sight of the finished cabinets, lined up pristine and tidy on the floor, every one finished. "Good morning," he says mildly, then, "Hungry?"
Kai shakes his head, not even taking time to think. "Not really." His stomach groans in protest, but he ignores it. "I just want to finish these, wrap them up so I can bring them over this morning."
Dan's eyebrows go down at that, and he looks at his son with a slight worried frown. "They're due?" he asks briefly, a real question in his voice. Kai winces at the mild reproof and answers after only a slight hesitation.
"Well, no, but, if I get them to them, they can install them faster, you know? And it's good to be moving, out and doing something." He rests a hand on the nearest cabinet, its surface smooth and even.
Dan watches his son with mixed compassion and worry shading slowly across his face, and he says quietly, "Come eat anyway. Keep me company."
Kai swallows a little sickly, but then forces his mouth into a smile that softens into a real one when he focuses on his dad. "Okay," he says softly, then, "Do you want me to clean up first?"
Dan looks at his son again with a hard-to-read expression, then says, "Sure. Take a little, I'll get coffee started." Kai nods with a stronger smile and straightens, his back popping and lungs expanding at the motion.
"Oof. Sounds good." He pauses next to his dad, wanting to pat his arm but stymied by his filthiness.
Dan has no such hesitation as he brings his own hand up to pat his son on the back. "Get clean. I'll see you."
Kai nods, then makes his way out of the detached garage and into the growing light. He notices with surprise that it's later than he thoughtā€”no longer the light of pre-dawn, but the vibrant gold of growing day. He clatters carelessly up the stairs and into the bathroom, stripping efficiently and turning on the stream of water. As it starts to steam, he looks at his reflection in the mirror: grimy face, serious and with notes of sadness around the eyes, restless expression, lines of tiredness tugging at the corners. Wreathing steam coils around him and grabs his attention, and he steps into the hot water thankfully, hissing at the heat and stinging and letting the water sluice away his thoughts and distractions.
As Kai comes down, his mind is refreshingly exhausted and blank. He flops down in a chair just as Dan pours the second cup of coffee, picking it up to hand to him as Kai murmurs an appreciative, "Thank you." The nutty-rich flavor floods over his tongue, scraping it clean of stickiness with its astringency, and landing in his stomach with a palpable thud. Dan's already put down a plate in front of him; Kai wants to protest, but it's just toast and jam, and with a suppressed queasy look he picks it up and nibbles. It soothes his stomach like a hand smoothing a rumpled comforter, and he sighs and relaxes, taking a larger bite and sipping coffee.
Dan sits down opposite to him and quietly starts eating his own breakfast, his eyes fixed on his son. Kai gets most of the way through his breakfast before belatedly wishing that the coffee in his hand was tea, green tea. It usually sits more smoothly on his insides, and he lifts his head, mouth open to askā€” But then the memories flood back, all the memories he'd been hedging out with cabinets and plans and wrapping and deliveries, meticulous motions covering great force of distraction in his mind, now stripped away. He can't take another bite, another swallow, his throat suddenly clogged with tears, and he drops his head, lip trembling, trying to swallow the feelings away into silence. The silence echoes, and he realizes dully that Dan must have noticed, must have seen; but even that thought can't catch the tears that have already forced themselves out, dotting the plate and the table with betraying wetness.
Kai startles when his dad's hand comes to rest on his shoulder, gripping gently but firmly, supportive. "'m sorryā€” Dadā€”" he forces out, but can't speak more. His father's response is to stand and come to his side, hugging him without reserve, without expectation. Kai leans against his dad in the hug, sobs crowding in his throat, but stuck, he refuses to release them. He swallows them, sick with effort, and scrubs the back of a wrist across his face. His dad's hold is calming, but the loneliness in his chest makes him feel like he's being torn into pieces. "'nks," he whispers, then more strongly, trying to stand. "Iā€” I'llā€” I need to finishā€”" He'll go back out to the garage, bury himself in the project so deeply that he can't remember, won't remember, won't feel anything but satisfaction in his work. It's the only thing to do, butā€”
Dan's grip doesn't release him. "Kai," he says softly but with velvet-wrapped iron in his tone. "Go sleep. You have to sleep."
Kai wilts in his grip. "I, I'm notā€”" tired, but he is, he's nearly falling now that he's standing, head spinning. "I don'tā€”" need it, but he does, he can barely think, and his hands are shaking, now. "I had c-coffee," he says, then looks up at his dad, trying to smile. Dan's expression is gentle but intent, and he shakes his head.
"Decaf. If I have to walk you there myself I will." He means it. Kai can see it in his eyes. But he can't face the thought of that bed, their bed, his bed, the empty bed, going in the room to see absolutely nothing unexpected thereā€”
"I, I c-can't sleep there, Dad," he whispers, then lowers his face, ashamed. Dan's grip tightens, and Kai doesn't resist, but his father's hands are gentle as they come to turn him and propel him toward the room opposite.
"The couch is fine." Dan's voice is pragmatic, and Kai lets out his breath. The couch is a little better, they, they didn't, well, rarely slept thereā€” He pauses in involuntary surprise as he sees that his dad has already laid down sheets, a blanket, and a pillow. His father's hands release him, and he turns his head to see his dad watching him with a worried look.
Kai finds he's really smiling, though once again his burning eyes are swimming, and he impulsively steps forward and hugs his father, voice thick. "Thank you," he mutters, then yawns helplessly, his jaw near to splitting. "W-wake meā€¦ inā€¦ not too long," he mumbles, sitting abruptly on the soft surface and fumbling his socks off, his feet delightfully cool as he swings them up under the soft sheet. "I haf'taā€¦ d'liver those. Today."
Dan watches his son's eyes close, then gently tucks the blanket in and around him. "Don't fret," he says quietly, then brushes a gentle hand over his boy's smooth forehead where sleep has already wiped away his stress and sadness, relaxed into exhausted repose. Dan stands there a moment more, watching his eldest son freed of his efforts to flee his memories, then runs an absent hand through his hair, leaving it standing up every which way. As he goes out his eyes are thoughtful and sad, and he heads upstairs to sternly tell his younger sons not to trample around like elephants, for their brother's sake. It's hard to watch, this. He glances into Kai's roomā€”it's quiet and empty, almost blank and deserted-feeling, and he sighs again, his eyebrows drawing together in worried determination before he knocks on his other sons' door.
Kai sleeps, and sleeps. He sleeps dreamlessly, which is a blessing, at least in the beginning; empty quiet, calm, healing. But as the light shifts angle and slants through the crack in the curtains, he begins to dream; strange worlds, weird sights, sounds and tastes unlike any on Earth. But there's always a constant, a flash of blue, or is it brown? Definitely brown, those eyes, and warm, and with eyelashes as soft and long as a wren's wing, and laughing lips and a face so alive, and when the eyes land on him and crinkle with delight Kai opens his mouth to laugh, joy filling himā€”
Kai opens his eyes, his expression amazed and delighted. But as consciousness seeps in, the color seeps out of his face, and he sags back against the couch and drags his sleeve over his eyes, trying not to cry. Alone. Still alone. Only aloneā€¦ He's doing everything he can, but it's pulling him apart, piece by piece, until he doesn't have anything left. At least I can still work. I can, I can still build. I can make somethingā€¦
Something that isn't a relationship, whispers his traitorous mind, and he chokes, not breathing for a moment before the tears start and he rolls to bury his face in the couch pillow, drowning again in the sadness and solitude, his hands empty. He has to push through. It's all he can do. He can't stay here like this; and God knows he can't go back, he can never go backā€¦ Kai swallows hard, then lets the tears flow for a while, his heart aching. I'll try. I'll keep trying. Just a little longer, and a little longer still. Things, things have to get better. They have toā€¦

After the Disaster
Kai and the Doctor spent the next few hours pulling people from the rubble. They arrived even before the dust settled, and as people were choking and coughing and stumbling around in dazed confusion they took charge, shouting instructions to the able-bodied and asking for anyone with medical expertise or strength to lend their skills.
The sonic proved invaluable in fusing ready-to-crumble rubble, or loosening seemingly impossibly-tightly-packed blocks. Kai pulled rock after rock out of the way, directing and leading even as he bent his back and all his strength toward getting people out. When at last the light faded so that it was impossible to work, and they couldn't hear any more voices calling out, Kai put a hand on the Doctor's shoulder, his face sweat- and dirt-streaked, eyes tired. The Doctor nodded. Without a word the two of them slipped away to the Tardis, closing her rectangular door on the night and the mourning they were leaving behindā€”less mourning than there would have been, had they not come, but still a heart-wrenching amount.
The transition to the interior of the Tardis was jarring. From dust and blood and sweat and tears and utter destruction to her calmly lit, soothing, clean and spacious insides. Kai took a stumbling breath, closing his eyes for a moment before blinking them open again dizzily, swaying with a sudden wave of exhaustion. Every muscle in his body hurt, and when he looked down at himself his face fell at the tell-tale signs of the traumatic event they'd just been through. He looked over at the Doctorā€”he hadn't fared any better, his once-trim suit a rumpled, soiled mess, his hair sagging and filthy, his eyes wide and pale in his grit-darkened face. Kai felt a wave of pity for the Doctor, able to do so little and yet so muchā€¦ "Doctor," he said quietly, reaching out to take the other man's hand. The Doctor flinched, and Kai stopped, giving him space. His voice was tired but gentle. "Doctor. Let's go take a shower. Okay? W-we'll feel much better." The Doctor looked at him, somewhat dazed, but nodded after a moment, his hand rising to take, then squeeze, Kai's. Kai nodded in relief, and without another word led the way to the bathroom, where he got the shower running even before he started stripping off his ruined clothing, the rising steam starting to loosen the ground-in dirt and easing his tired aches.

Drabble: A Talk with Dan
"You and that Doctor are serious."
Kai blinked and looked up from where he was smoothing the door of the cabinet, fingers buried in a gritty sandpaper pad and pale blonde dust settling in the grooves. His dad continued calmly working at the details on the top of the piece, carefully cleaning out curves and carved out lines, pausing to look up at his son when the silence stretched out a bit too long. Kai opened and closed his mouth once, swallowing, then nodded. Dan nodded in return, hand gone meditatively still, and Kai had a sense of impending something. His dad pushed his sons to independence and making their own decisions, and didn't push them for personal details unless something important was on his mind. Kai felt a flush starting high in his cheeks, but he kept his eyes fixed on his dad's, readying himself for whatever was coming. Dan's next question was deceptively mild.
"Are you treating him well?"
Kai blinked again, a bit at a loss. He swallowed, then said with less than his usual confidence, "I think soā€¦?" He looked back down at the wood for a moment, his mind running through his and the Doctor's interactions, and while there were one or two selfish moments and a couple hiccups in communication, he really thought he had done his best. "Iā€¦ It's my job to travel with him, and I try to take care of him, too." A small, fond smile touched his lips despite himself when his mind brushed over their many happy memories together. "We get along well, and I do my best to help him in all the ways he needs it." He looked up at his dad again, gaining steam. "Sometimes when we talk, we really miss each other. It's almost like we're speaking different languages, likeā€¦ like, the words I say just, just don't bridge that gap. And what he says and what he means, or, or at least what I understand, they don't always line up, even when I'm trying." He huffed a laugh that was partly a sigh. "We really have to work harder to understand, but we're getting better and better, I think." It felt good to say all this out loud. Kai trusted and respected his dad, and while he was very happy with the Doctor, their misunderstandings were more of a struggle for him than he cared to admit at times, and he was grateful for a chance to talk about it.
Dan nodded, listening as he worked again, carefully turning and shaving the tool at just the right angle to get through a tricky bit. His voice was calm and thoughtful as he spoke, Kai leaning forward unconsciously to soak in what he said. "'s like that, when you love someone different from you. You have to try harder. But you get more, too."
Kai nodded quietly, thinking back to what he remembered of his mother and his dad. He couldn't remember them fighting, ever, just talking together and taking their time when they disagreedā€¦ It hadn't seemed unusual to him, as a kid, but he could see now the value in that, and he calmed as his fingers worked the sandpaper in steady circles. They worked for a little in silence, Kai starting to get into the rhythm of it and relaxing into the steady predictability of the project.
"You two have sex?"
Dan's question took Kai off-guard, hand slipping in a long streak over the surface as his fingers spasmed in surprise. He could feel his face flush crimson immediately, and when he looked up his eyes were squinting from unprepared mortification. Dan looked unconcerned, carefully using the tip of an awl to clean out a delicate curlicue. He paused and glanced over at Kai when he froze, face calm, waiting. Kai swallowed, knowing that he didn't have to answer, that Dad would let it go, butā€¦ His response had already given it away, really. Still, somehow, saying it out loud... Kai struggled for a few more heartbeats before choking out, "Yes," hastily following it up with "sometimes, justā€¦" He trailed off lamely, shrinking a little and waiting for Dan's reaction.
Dan let the answer hang in the air for a moment before nodding without surprise and brushed the shavings away from the surface of the wood, inspecting the piece as he spoke meditatively. "You love him, and he loves you. That's a natural growth from that." He brought his eyes up to meet Kai's, Kai having lifted his head during the silence. "Make sure you're being careful of him in that way, too." He shook his head, continuing, "Not just careful of his feelings, but careful of his body. If there's any chance that your body could make him sick, or there's an incompatibility, make sure you talk about it. Protect each other. Don't hurt someone you love by being careless."
Kai swallowed and nodded seriously, still feeling heat in his cheeks but really hearing was his dad was saying. He'd never thought of that, it justā€¦ It had never come up, and the Doctor had cheerfully asserted that his body was new and "clean", so Kai hadn't thought to pursue things further (his mind, at the moment, being preoccupied with stammering out his own situation and shy of confessing his inexperience). His voice was still a little high from embarrassment, but deadly sincere, when he said "I will, Dad, I'll talk to him right away." He gave a grunting sigh of embarrassment, hand brushing over the scrape he'd made in his surprise, and he found himself saying, "I justā€¦ I honestly never expected that." He looked up at his dad, wanting him to understand. "I didn't realize it myself, in the beginning, and for him to love me too, after that timeā€¦" He pressed his lips together, then asked, "I dunno if it'll last, but Iā€¦ I hope it does. Doesā€¦ do youā€¦" He swallowed, struggling to finish his sentence. His voice was small, when he said, "Do you mindā€¦?"
At that Dan set down his tool, careless of the surface of the desk, and reached forward. Kai blinked in surprise as his dad enfolded him in a hug, the edge of the desk poking him in the ribs and making him *oof* in surprise, but after a second Kai clung to his dad and buried his face in his shoulder, wanting to cry from relief. Dan's voice was calm and steady. "Of course not. You're my son, and I love you." His arms tightened, and Kai gripped him, feeling vulnerable. "You're going to face extra trouble, people being what they are. But that doesn't make you less valid, or him. And I will always love you." Kai nodded, heart full, and hung on for a few moments, feeling relief and embarrassment and shyness and gladness all mix in his heart. When Dan let go after a few moments, Kai did too, relaxing back, and giving a little self-conscious laugh as he rubbed at his ribs. Dan picked up his tool, smiling fondly at his son, and said off-handedly, "I'd better buy a new bed for the two of you."
Kai found himself flustered all over again, all his fingers suddenly turned to thumbs as he fumbled with the sandpaper in his hand. "Ah, I, erā€¦ I don'tā€¦" He was suddenly flushing crimson again, realizing that his dad was being thoughtful and generous butā€¦ about that... Agh. Kai shut up and rubbed harder at the surface of the desk than he really needed to, hoping that silence would be enough.
Dan was back at his work again, an amused glint in his eye as he glanced at his son. "Will a queen be enough? Or too much?" Kai stopped abruptly and made an incomprehensible noise at that, staring at his father in consternation, and Dan gave a brief snort of laughter. "All right, all right. I'll give you two your privacy." He reached over, then, and rested his hand on Kai's forearm, his gaze turned earnest. "But you can always talk to me, if you need to." Kai nodded, giving a smile of mixed embarrassment and gladness, and the two of them went back to work.

Recent drawings in the midst of old stuff
Couldnā€™t resist drawing my favourite Doctor and Vash when I noticed that thereā€™s so much similarities between those characters x3
They have the same height, wear billowy coats, are more or less pacifists (one being fully pacifist but having to use violence, and the other abhorring violence but not so against giving a fate worse than death to some foes), both kinda live out of time, being what they are.. In addition to that they both have a kin they need to stop despite not wanting to, and they both have tragic pasts with actions that they regretā€¦
(More rambling about those guys under the cut)
