Hazel Simone Zildjian c. February 2003 – November 4th 2018

On Sunday, my deeply beloved, most enchanting Hazel Simone Zildjian passed away at home. She gave me the gift of letting me hold her in my arms as she left us, with both Mom and Dad with their hands on her, and Phoebe’s love so palpably present.

Hazel brought joy and comfort to all who met her, and her many thousands of online fans, duly enchanted by her balancing tricks. Despite her online fame, she was a retiring lady who preferred a firm bed, a good patch of sun, and the company of a choice few beloved humans. Hazel saved my life. Knowing and loving her has defined my heart from the age of 11, when I first saw the little white moon on her head and chose her as my own. She was my strength, my confidant, my baby. Phoebe and I called her a worry sponge, and often joked that her plump frame was not chub, but the result of her eating and dispelling our anxieties. Family lore also has it that some of that bulk came from hidden wings. On Sunday, those wings deployed, and our dear girl flew off to wait for us, pain free, in heaven.

Queen Elizabeth II, a fellow lover of corgis, once said that “Grief is the price we pay for love.” How deep my love for Hazel is, and how deep the grief. However, it is a price I proudly pay for the love of my own sweet Queen.

I had to have Chloe put to sleep this morning. She had a tumor the size of a golf ball on top of her head and a couple more around her nose and eyes, which made it very difficult for her to breathe, and she went blind due to severe glaucoma.

It broke my heart to see her like that and I didn’t want her to suffer anymore. After the vet gave her a sedative I spent an hour cuddling with her until it kicked in, then the vet gave her the euthanasia drug and I hugged and petted her to comfort her until she stopped breathing and her sweet little heart stopped beating. It was so hard to say goodbye and accept that she wasn’t going wake up again.

Rest in peace, Chloe. You’re in a much better place and I’m thankful for the six years we had together. There will always be a special place in my heart for you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR #corgination 🎉🎉🎉 This year was really intense! We’d like to thank all of you who have sent us kind words as love through Hambone’s surgery. We read every word and felt the positivity through our soul. There were many losses in the community this year, too many, and our hearts go out to those dear friends and families who love our little stubby legged fur babies. As our community grows with every new litter, we must all remember how amazing this experience is, to have a loving and fun world of being a Corgi owner! Really!
