hi there!!! i saw that you ship joey x susie, but i was wondering why you don't ship samsie? they're my otp and i'm curious on your opinion.
Hello there, anon! Thanks for sending this in, it was a curious and pleasant surprise to log onto! Without judging those that do ship samsie, I’d be happy to go into my reasons on why I don’t.
1. They’d be boring. Of course, this is my opinion that I’ve gathered from characterization of both Susie and Sammy that we’ve been given so far. The only thing that they have in common is their love for music. That’s it. And while they could partake in a few cute activities together to share that passion, such as singing/playing at a lounge, that’s not enough foundation for a relationship to build upon. Personality wise, they would clash. Susie is passionate and was canonly well-like around the studio, but we also know that she has a fire in her and is very emotionally driven. Sammy is serious, grouchy, not very personable nor does he seem to hold interest in anyone around him unless it involves a complaint (see: his understandable annoyance towards Joey). One is logical while the other is emotional – while opposites can attract, they often flat line if there is no deeper connection shared between them. A big reason I ship joesie is because they do have this while samie lacks it: both Joey and Susie are dreamers that are career-focused and extremely passionate in their goals. They will go to great lengths to be sure said dreams are met and are both stubborn with determination. There is more to be shared between joesie: they would be a roller-coaster of taboo/unexpected love, angst, regret and longing. It makes for a more interesting ship.
2. Misogyny. According to the canon batim novel, Dreams Come to Life, Sammy is described as a “product of his time”. This is showcased in two instances: when it is heavily suggested that he is racist towards an angry Thomas (a known poc character) and sexist towards the new head of the animation department, a woman. Susie, unlike Sammy, is a modern thinker. Unlike the vast majority of women in 1920′s - 1930′s America, she is a career woman with self-fulfilling dreams and plans for herself that, at the time, did not involve giving all that up to settle down and stay home with children. If Sammy is truly a product of his time; then like many men in that time period, he would want his lady to give up her career to become a homemaker once married. I can’t see that going over well with Susie.
3. Sammy not warning Susie. In the Employee Handbook guide (considered canon) that was released, we get to see the actual memo Joey sent out to all employees – except Susie – regarding her sudden replacement with Allison Pendle. The memos went out at the start of the morning that very same day, as the words “this afternoon” are used. This means that literally everyone under payroll got this memo, Sammy especially. Susie returned after lunch to see Allison in her booth, talking with Sammy. If there were any romantic feelings between the two of them, wouldn’t Sammy have felt horrible for Susie and pulled her aside to tell her what was going to happen? Instead, it was all business to him and he allowed her to walk blindly into such a heartbreaking and sudden event. As Malice, we even hear Susie call Sammy a “good liar” – probably thinking all of his support was nothing more than blowing smoke as her supervisor and nothing more.
4. Fleeting attraction. Based off a couple of Susie’s tape recordings, we hear her call Sammy “handsome” and/or with a tone that suggests she having a crush on him. It’s widely fanon that this initial, physical attraction was when she was first hired and put under the direction of Sammy via the music department and before her one-on-one lunch date with Joey. There is no mention of Sammy after the luncheon as well as no hints towards she maintaining her physical-based crushed on him or it developing into something more. Everything became “Alice Angel and Joey” for Susie, while Sammy began to focus more on his work as his addiction to the ink grew (as seen in the novel).
5. Susie’s shifted feelings. Unless you’re in denial, Susie’s unexpected attraction to Joey in said tape is obvious. She calls him charming, sounds giddy about getting to have lunch with him, and her tone drastically changing to one more sultry when mentioning he calling her Alice and how much she liked it. From that point onward in the tapes, timeline and discussions with Malice, Susie’s emotional highs and lows start to branch from Joey’s actions and Joey’s alone. This suggests that her initial crush on Sammy was forgotten as she took a greater interest in Joey.
6. Alice’s Angel’s wrath. As far as we know, Malice and Sammy leave each other alone in the ink-replicated studio years later. They don’t seem to visit another, don’t talk about each other’s whereabouts or recent activities, and frankly don’t seem to care about each other’s existence at all. Yet, what do we hear a lot of from Malice? Pain and anger regarding Joey. Of course, this is to be expected after what he pulled. But did you pick up on the spike of emotions since she met Joey? Even after she was fired/replaced, Susie’s level of upset towards him and what he did to her screams a girlfriend scorned rather than simply a ticked off employee – as if there had been something more. All of her emotions, both high and low, stem from Joey and not Sammy. I was half expecting Sammy and Malice to interact in some way during BATIM; the fact that they didn’t? It solidified their lack of interest in another in my opinion.
7. Sammy’s “Special One”. During the Hot Topic interview with “ink” Sammy, he was asked many question to which everything was posted publicly on Twitter years ago. When asked about Susie, he said he called her charming smile (Susie used the adjective charming to describe Joey) and voice. Then, in a separate question, he was asked if he has a “special someone” at the studio. Sammy’s reply? He couldn’t recall their name! If he remembers Susie but not this special person … they cannot be the same. According to Sammy in that interview, Susie did not hold any special place in his heart
NOTE: Like I stated above, if you ship samsie? That’s fine! Ship away! This is just my blunt, honest opinion on why I do NOT ship them and see no chemistry at all. Thank you for sending this in!!

FAMILY HISTORY
Suzanne “Susie” Campbell was the first and only child born to a young, married couple. Susie’s father owned and operated the town’s most well-known butcher store and some of her earliest memories are of scurrying around the shop, occasionally finding her way into the cold back rooms where behind the frozen, hanging meat, favorite hiding spots were found during frequent games of Hide n’ Seek. Unfortunately, Susie’s father passed away when she was still very young, leaving her mother to raise her alone in the early 1900′s.
Despite loving her daughter, Susie’s mother felt a lingering, subconscious disappointment over the fact that her dreams of the limelight were not given a “proper chance” due to how her life had turned out. Years passed and after taking note of her child’s talent and potential, Susie’s mother began to project her failed dreams onto Susie.
Taking after her mother, Susie had the gift of song as well as acting and enjoyed both just as much. However, her mother’s constant demands of practice, increasingly heightened expectations and following disappointment made for a good foe against the joy she felt on the stage. Eventually, it wore Susie down as she hit adolescence, ultimately causing a rather large insecurity complex and growing obsession with perfectionism. This carried into her young adult years and career life, which led her to Joey Drew Studios. Even after.
Don’t let the extroverted persona fool you; charming smiles make for good masks that conceal cracked convenience underneath.

why do you always muff it up when mister drew's around, miss campbell?
Susie’s hand was truly caught in the cookie jar this time. Even as the canary kept busy in the form of reorganizing today’s script an’ to do’s, she could feel the suspicious gaze of her coworker linger and bore into her like blazing stage lights. With a sole denial and one crack at playing dumb having failed, it was becoming quite the struggle to suppress the playful grin tugging at the corners of mulberry mantled lips that accompanied the truth. Had the motive behind her recent, intentional hiccups in the recording booth around Joey been that transparent? Was the studio’s angel becoming that predictable when fluttering wings grew clumsy around no one other than the devil himself?
Tumblr media
“ Maybe I just like practicing with him. “
A spark in emerald eyes suggest more to the story, but as Susie tucks the thick script against her chest with the turn of a heel and offered her companion a coy grin, anyone can see that she wasn’t about to continue the tale.

Susie and Norman, canonly, were close friends.
This isn’t even fanon or a theory, it’s legit canon. If you’re like me and you look into a character’s tone, then you may have also suspected it before. After buying my copy of BATIM: DCTL, it was confirmed in my opinion.
First, let’s look at DCTL. The book takes place after Allison had replaced Susie as Alice Angel’s voice actress, so we don’t see or hear from Susie at all (most likely because she’s already dead/”Malice” Angel). Susie is only mentioned twice in the novel and the first time is by Norman when addressing both Buddy and Dot.
“ ... Alice was popular for a beat. So was the original actress, Susie. You ever meet her?” asked Norman to Dot. “Once,” she replied. “Cute kid.” Decades ago, “kid” was a term often used by men to address women that were younger than them and/or as a general term of endearment by men given to women. Norman is canonly known to be older than most of the BATIM characters and we can only assume Susie was in her twenties, seeing as her career was just taking off. Norman calling Susie “cute kid” was both a compliment and also an endearing nod towards a friendship. Yes, she was younger than him but he obviously knew her enough to state the remark more as a fact with no hesitation.
Tumblr media
Now, looking at chapter 3 in the BATIM game: When Malice sends us on one of her many errands, we are sent to the depths to retrieve ink hearts, which is The Projectionist’s lair: formally Norman. One of the first things she tells us is:
“Take the lift down. Say hello to an old friend.”
It’s also important to note that, unlike the Searchers and Butcher Gang, she doesn’t require you to slay the Projectionist/Norman out of paranoia, spite, etc. Granted, he is a much stronger opponent; there’s the chance that even if she did want Henry to get the Projectionist out of the way, she knew he would stand next to no chance taking him on (especially without the tommy gun), so she suggests a stealthier approach. But I still find it interesting that she has nothing foul to say about Norman. Malice describes him, gives a warning, instructions and then that’s it. Perhaps there is still a part of her deep down, the Susie part, that recalls their friendship and it translates into not wishing him harm.
Tumblr media
In one of Wally’s tapes, he states that Susie is good to him. Treats him kindly. So it’s no shock that she would have given the quiet, mostly unnoticed projectionist at the studio some well-deserved attention as well.
Susie and Norman were friends before their deaths. You can take their canon, platonic bond from my cold, dead fingers.

So, I bought Dreams Come to Life today and there are a few little facts that I found interesting??
1. Sammy’s human stature is described as angular, pointy and birdlike.
2. Allison is platinum-blonde and her looks remind Buddy of Ginger Rogers.
3. When a soul-transfer occurs via the ink ritual, the human bodies of those killed/sacrificed are left behind. So after your human self dies, your soul transitions from the ink into the new ink body. Your former body, now an empty shell, remains.
4. Bertrum is decribed as “burly and bearlike”. I know, it surprised me too.
5. Tom is taller than Joey and Buddy describes him like a “strong wall” whose arms even fill out his sleeves well.
6. Susie, at least to Allison and Tom, is seen as a sad topic.

headcanon questionnaire: susie campbell.
Tumblr media
—    BASICS.
▸     IS  YOUR  MUSE  TALL  /  SHORT  /  AVERAGE    ?
average. although she runs on the shorter end of the average-height spectrum.
▸      ARE  THEY  OKAY  WITH  THEIR  HEIGHT    ?
definitely. not overly short, yet not nearly too tall. perfect for high heels.
▸      WHAT’S    THEIR    HAIR    LIKE ?
black, wavy, medium length  –  unless caught in some storm outside, her hair is always styled and ends around shoulder-length, give or take a couple inches.
▸     DO    THEY    SPEND    A    LOT    OF    TIME    ON    THEIR    HAIR     /    GROOMING ?
yes.  my god, yes. however; unlike what her coworkers may believe, this habit does not stem from vanity.  underneath the charm and confidence her acting abilities have allowed her to easily project, lies deep-rooted insecurities.  although many factors contribute to this fact, her appearance is one of them.  susie will usually wake up early each morning just to be sure she looks her best.
▸     DOES  YOUR  MUSE  CARE  ABOUT  THEIR  APPEARANCE  /  WHAT  OTHERS  THINK ?
again, yes.  for the same reason listed above. susie has struggled with insecurities since childhood despite her striking features.  she is also big on impressions and dressing for occasions, so she is always styled accordingly and will think sour of someone for not doing the same.   if someone were to, for an example, dress sloppy at work? judged.
—    PREFERENCES.
▸     INDOORS  OR  OUTDOORS    ?
indoors. although a walk around the city occasionally never hurt. she does enjoy snow, though.
▸     RAIN  OR  SUNSHINE    ?
sunshine. rain can be awful messy.
▸     FOREST  OR  BEACH    ?
beach.  she’s a “sunbathing, sunglasses and floppy sun-hat wearing under a large beach umbrella” kind of gal.
▸     PRECIOUS  METALS  OR  GEMS    ?
gems.  diamonds are a girl’s best friend, are they not? fun fact: susie’s favorite gem is a ruby.
▸     FLOWERS  OR  PERFUMES    ?
flowers, although she is one to wear perfume. it’s just that flowers typically are given by someone else, so there is sentiment behind them.
▸     PERSONALITY  OR  APPEARANCE    ?
appearance.  at least, regarding herself. when it comes to others and the company she keeps? personality is what matters to her.
▸     BEING  ALONE  OR  BEING  IN  A  CROWD    ?
both.  when it comes to her role and career as an singer/voice actress, naturally she prefers to address a crowd.  susie has no issue talking to the press or greeting fans -- she puts her heart into Alice Angel and wants nothing more than for the people to love the character as much as she does.  susie also adores her job, so she will socialize with coworkers often to be sure everything on her end is done fluidly and correctly the first time.  sharing her passions and relating to certain people may encourage her to go out of her way to talk to them occasionally, however; once she is off the clock and home, susie is always alone.
▸     ORDER  OR  ANARCHY    ?
order, preferably.  but she causes anarchy at times.
▸     PAINFUL  TRUTHS  OR  WHITE  LIES    ?
painful truths.  as pretty as white lies can make her feel, susie would rather be hit with the painful truth. she values honesty and being upfront; this prevents both parties from wasting another’s time and doesn’t keep her blissfully unaware of some secret, which in turn makes her feel like a fool once the truth is revealed. “alice, though? ohh, she doesn’t like liars.”
▸     SCIENCE  OR  MAGIC    ?
magic.  "dreams come true, susie. dreams come true.”
▸      PEACE  OR  CONFLICT    ?
conflict. as much as she wishes and likes things to run/resolve smoothly, her fiery temper can often cause escalation and conflict arises if she feels wronged.
▸     NIGHT  OR  DAY    ?
day. it’s during daylight that she is able to do what she loves and inch herself closer to accomplishing her aspirations.
▸     DUSK  OR  DAWN    ?
dawn.  see above. susie is that gal to get up super early not only to start her long, morning routine -- but simply out of excitement to get to work.
▸     WARMTH    OR    COLD ?
warmth. although later in “life”, she gets used to the cold.
▸     MANY  ACQUAINTANCES  OR  A  FEW  CLOSE  FRIENDS    ?
many acquaintances.  although not particularly healthy, susie would prefer to have many acquaintances all held at arm’s length. although fairly easy to get along with and not one to necessarily look to start trouble (unless particularly spiteful due to an event), it’s susie’s inability to completely trust other people that keeps her from opening up. it takes a special type of person to earn and maintain her trust.
▸     READING    OR    PLAYING    A    GAME ?
reading.  scripts, headliners, music sheets - oh my!
—    QUESTIONNAIRE.
▸      WHAT    ARE    SOME    OF    YOUR    MUSE’S    BAD    HABITS ?
pettiness, primarily. susie campbell may have an outstanding work ethic, a passion for her dreams that rivals joey drew’s himself, and an enthusiastic determination that sets the bar - but she is the definition of “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”. get on her bad side and it will be nothing but dagger-like glances, spiteful sabotage, backhanded remarks, and a redirected determination to see that person wriggle like a worm on a hook until they bleed out.
▸      HAS  YOUR  MUSE  LOST  ANYONE  CLOSE  TO  THEM    ?        HOW  HAS  IT  AFFECTED   THEM    ?
this answer is rather timeline dependent. while alive, susie was not terribly close to her family. her own birth hadn’t been planned and she was born rather late in her parents lives; her own always felt overshadowed by her overachieving, elder sister. susie keeps in contact with her mother via letters, but only updates the family when there is good news to boast about. in a way, losing her studio family was susie’s biggest loss. she lost not only coworkers, but the closest she’d allowed herself to friends in the longest time. she lost her dream and she lost love. mix that level of heartbreak with surfacing desperation, and then a failed ritual to become the one thing you feel your truest self being, and it would cause anyone to slowly lose it.
▸      WHAT  ARE  SOME  FOND  MEMORIES  YOUR  MUSE  HAS    ?
her life at joey drew studios. up until the afternoon where she had walked in on allison pendle in her recording booth, the time spent at joey drew studios were the best years of susie’s life. she felt as if she had it all: a dream role where she genuinely related to the character and cared about its workings, a stable job where she was valued and treated more than fairly, a position in a booming company that would one day elevate her name in lights, she had coworkers she got along and could finally laugh with, an unexpected love she found more than charming - everything she had worked towards and that you could write home about.
▸     IS  IT  EASY  FOR  YOUR  MUSE  TO  KILL    ?
oh yeah.  easily. at least, when she has become “malice” angel post-sacrifice. when alive, the concept of committing murder never crossed susie’s mind, despite her high level of pettiness when scorned. however; once the ritual is performed and is confirmed a failure, malice’s mental spiral downward eventually creates a monster that finds disemboweling fellow ink beings for personal gain as nonchalant an action as drinking morning coffee.
▸      WHAT’S  IT  LIKE  WHEN  YOUR  MUSE  BREAKS  DOWN    ?
a solitary affair.  a private struggle carried out behind locked dressing room doors and drawn blinds.  her inability to fully open up to other people results in any battles lost within the confides of mock confidence in her head being dealt with alone. typically taking place in her apartment, often triggered by her own reflection or paranoia having built up after a rather rough week, clothes from susie’s closet may end up thrown on the floor as well as her elongated mirror covered or possibly broken - depending on the degree of the breakdown.
▸      IS  YOUR  MUSE  CAPABLE  OF  TRUSTING  SOMEONE  WITH  THEIR  LIFE    ?
no, not until it was her life and soul susie was handing over to joey willingly in order to become the living Alice Angel.  up until then, her trust was scarcely handed out.
▸      WHAT’S  YOUR  MUSE  LIKE  WHEN  THEY’RE  IN  LOVE    ?  attentive and passionate, susie is a soulmate before all else. while she enjoys the flirts and compliments of suitors like the next gal, it takes a very someone special to tear down the nailed planks around her heart and encourage her to give it away. once in love; however, susie is completely and utterly loyal. to be at the point where love is involved, she would already have a tight grasp and understanding of the man in question. his change of mood and when something is upsetting him wouldn’t be concealed from susie easily and her attentive nature would hone in on attempting to correct the situation for his sake. because she does not let people in easily and finally doing so meaning she’d have bonded with the individual, there would also always be an underlining fear that she would lose said love. on a more surface level, though, susie is also very passionate. considered a modern woman for the time period, she will not hesitate to initiate a kiss or more once in a relationship with someone she truly loves. looking at you, @drewgod ‘s joey drew.
