Book Review: The Book of Koli by MR Carey
The Facts:
Author - MR Carey
Pages - 376
Genre - Science Fiction, Weird Nature, Post-apocalyptic
The Review:
The Book of Koli is the first book in a series called The Rampart Trilogy by author MR Carey. The book follows Koli from his childhood to manhood in a post-apocalyptic world where everything in nature is a threat to the surviving humans. And that’s all I want to give away about the plot (honestly I wish movie trailers didn’t exist - just give me one line and let everything else be a surprise).
I will say one thing, this book touches on one of my favourite genres - weird nature. i just love books where nature has been corrupted or evolved oddly (hence my Jeff VanDerMeer obsession to be covered in a later post). Give me trees trying to kill us or unsettling moss inching toward our hero or weirdly mutated animals, there is just something about this genre that’s so chilling, and yet it’s so woefully underused in horror and science fiction.
I don’t want to give away much about the book, because if at this point you still aren’t convinced you want to read it, I doubt anything else could really entice you! The book has a really nice flow, and the writing is really sweet with a nod to the narrator, Koli himself. MR Carey does a great job of adding in bits and pieces with his world-building, he never gives away too much, it’s always just enough to keep me curious about this world. An aside if you are unfamiliar with MR Carey, please get familiar - he wrote the amazing The Girl with All The Gifts, and has had some brilliant runs on the Hellblazer and the X-Men comics. I am linking his amazon page if you would like to order his books https://www.amazon.com/M.-R.-Carey/e/B00NGCIG46 - Amazon is where i purchased my copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I love the world itself - all the dangers and the remnants of the previous society, but must of all I loved Koli as a character. His sweetness and relationship with Monono make me root for him throughout the book. I genuinely cannot wait to see what happens to him in the next installment, The Trails of Koli, which is due to come out in September 2020.
The cover:
So the whole - do not judge a book by its cover thing, yeah I do not go for that. I love book covers, I will pay double or specially order in a book to avoid the “now a major motion picture” cover with the leading stars on it. I want a cover that almost tells you the story of the book. There is such a need for beautiful book covers - especially when i can just download a book to my kindle - this makes owning a physical book so much more special. The cover of The Book of Koli is gorgeous, the tentacle like plants creeping across the title with the cut out cover on a red background of chain-link fence is beautiful. It hints at the story and drew me in while I was browsing books online. Apologies for my photos, I was staying with family and the pet rabbit had a bit of a nibble while I was making a coffee.
4.5/5 - I loved it - will be blue in the face recommending this to people
