with his back to the wall, thackery felt a bit more at ease. not that he fully expected anything truly unfortunate to happen but he did already have two mishaps under his belt and that was plenty. a brief sharp pain to his foot brought his gaze to the fellow in front of him. he offered a soft smile, shuffling his feet a bit closer to the wall behind him. "that's quite alright - no worries. it's a rather crowded room and i'm content with blending into the background at the moment." he said.
Sulley was having a great time thank you and he was very much enjoying whatever number drink was in his hand. He’d come here accompanied though and he was having a hard time finding his date in a see of people dressed their best. Blue blended right in. He probably looked silly walking through the sea of people and standing on his toes to see over them. He did end up stepping on someone’s foot. “Oh, sorry, dear. I didn’t see you there.”

thackery had been so caught up in the dazzle of everything that he'd found himself paying more attention to what was around him than what was in front of him. a stern, scolding tone brought his attention back, however, and he nearly tripped over himself as he attempted to right his wrong. "i'm so terribly sorry! i should have- i wasn't quite paying attention, everything's just so-" deep breaths, thackery. "uhm. i really am sorry. it isn't damaged, is it?" he asked, concern furrowing his brow. he really needed to be more careful. of all people, he should know not to let his guard down. this was already his second fashion-related incident of the night.

“watch the train, watch the train!” penelope scolded as she felt a tug on her dress from someone stepping on it. “clearly some people don’t know the difference between couture and h&m.”

thackery had never been to a ball before. his social status - first as a farmboy, then as a cat - seemed a bit lacking for such a thing. and while he’d much rather stay home and settle in with a good book on any given evening, he also thought it might be of interest to get out of his comfort zone a little bit. a night of socializing might be nice every once in a while - maintaining friendships didn’t happen by distancing oneself, after all.
but despite knowing that there was an atmosphere of grandeur at such events, thackery hadn’t truly anticipated just how overwhelming all of it might be. between all of the gorgeous outfits and the beautiful people and the elegant music and glittering decorations, he had to wonder if perhaps this is how nick carraway might have felt upon attending one of gatsby’s parties for the first time.
it was the crowd that got to him, really. he’d tried to stay along the outskirts - it made it easier to get himself away if things felt a little too much. but he must’ve gotten a little too caught up in admiring everything around him and by the time he’d zoned back in enough to realize that he was in the thick of it, it was too late. in his haste to move out of the way of... well, most everyone, the lacing hooks on one of thackery’s boots got caught on someone else’s outfit. “oh - i’m terribly sorry, i-” he started, wide eyes falling on jasper, the victim of the offending boot. his shoulders relaxed upon recognizing a familiar face, the panic in his voice ebbing just a bit. “i’m sorry, truly. in my haste to depart from the crowd, it must’ve snagged...” he watched jasper untangle the fabric with a soft frown. “i do hope it didn’t tear your outfit at all.”

🎃 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ─────────── balls and galas were events jasper was used to. he had been raised in high society and was often the forefront of these extravaganzas. while he was raised to live on this pedestal it didn’t mean jasper enjoyed being at these gatherings. he certainly wasn’t a fan of them in this current moment but he had allowed himself to be a shut in for so long. at risk of something going horribly wrong, jasper went against his better judgement and came to the ball. the outfit he wore was already in his closet because of course jasper skellington would own something like this. it made him stand out a little too much when he was used to being in the shadows now. jasper, as per usual, was wildly uncomfortable. the space he tried to keep between himself and other was disrupted when the train of his outfit caught on someone else’s outfit. “ oh, ” the skeleton mumbled as he made eye contact with the other. “ i’m sorry. here allow me .. ” he added as he began to untangle his piece.

thackery listened as the man explained himself, nodding his head. "mm. that is rather unsettling, i'm sure." he hummed. "i'm not sure it would constitute a cult initiation, though. from what i've read, those require a bit more from the person being initiated than simply lending an ear." he said, offering a soft smile. "i believe you're safe, my friend."

thackery’s brows furrowed, head cocking slightly to one side. “what made you come to that conclusion, exactly?” he asked, genuinely curious. there were nuances to these things sometimes, after all, and perhaps knowing the fellow’s thought process would help determine the proper answer to his question.

“you know when someone comes to you with an idea… and then later you feel like its something in one of those crazy movies?” he explained, confused with how he really got himself into this. “they were just really weird, man.”

❛ i should’ve expected as much , ❜ victoria chuckled . if there was anyone who might know of such things , it would probably be thackery . ❛ how come you know so much and have opinions on , well , everything ? ❜ a chuckle , ❛ sometimes i feel as though i'm speaking to someone who's seen more than any of us ever will … at least than i will , i suppose . ❜

a light chuckle escaped thackery at her question, his shoulders raising in a shrug. "i believe i'm what they call an old soul." he admitted. exactly how old his soul was, he wasn't about to tell. not that he didn't feel he could trust victoria with such matters, simply that he felt his past was better left in the past. "i've seen my fair share and then some. but i'm sure you will, too, in time." and then, "i'm just... well-read, i suppose." hoping to shift the blame for his ways of thinking from his age to the fact that most days he could be found with his nose buried in a book.

“they’re sitting by the pillar,” serena hazarded another look, just to confirm they were still there. the figure she’d seen was just one person in the little bar they sat in, perhaps it was just a coincidence. but still …
“i’m…” she unfocused her eyes a little, just to be try and sense them. “i can’t really sense what they’re here for. maybe they don’t know themselves,” she guessed. “but they were definitely honing in on you.” turning her gaze back to thackery, she put a hand on his arm supportively. "what do you want to do?”
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆
the thought of someone he couldn't see honing in on him was, understandably, more than a bit disconcerting and thackery could feel the tug of panic as his fight or flight instinct kicked in. was it an overreaction? perhaps. but after everything he'd been through, thackery wasn't about to take any chances. his fingers tapped gently against the wooden table they were seated at. the gentle pressure of serena's hand on his arm was comforting, though, and helped to calm the anxiety welling up in his chest.
he gave a soft hum at serena's question before attempting casually glance in the direction of the pillar that she had mentioned to determine whether the person in question meant any ill will. the anxious feeling that had taken hold gave way to confusion upon seeing them, however, and his head tilted slightly to one side. careful not to stare, his gaze shifted back to the friend before him.
"i know them." he admitted, brows still slightly furrowed. "they're a frequent visitor at the library. i've helped them check books out before." his shoulders relaxed as the realization set in that for now, he was safe. "i'm not sure why they would be staring so intently but i don't believe they mean us any harm."

of course upon hearing don’t look, one’s instinct is to do just that while being anything but discreet. fortunately, thackery was able to catch himself - shoulders hunching a bit to keep himself from turning in the direction serena’s gaze was pointed. “who?” he asked, gaze flitting about and brows furrowed.
there was a plethora of reasons that someone might be looking at him or glancing in his general direction, but thackery would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a bit concerned by how comfortable he’d gotten in his life here in elias. the other shoe was bound to drop eventually, it was only a matter of when.

she rolled her eyes with a goodnatured smile. “most people would think that was rude,” she pointed. “so thank you for not being most people, thackery,” belle chuckled. going on her tiptoes, she tried to peer through wall of books between them to see what he had in his arms. “seems different from your usual choice of reading … i swear, i used to find you with the oldest books known to humankind, and now that paperback looks brand new. trying something different this year?” she teased.

thackery laughed softly at her thanks. “oh, you’re most welcome.” noticing her curious gaze still upon the books in his arms, he moved a bit closer to the shelves she was peering through. it would have probably been easier to join her in the next aisle over but that hadn’t occurred to him just yet. another laugh left him at her comment on his reading habits. “ah, well. i figured i must have missed out on some rather interesting modern literature while i was busy keeping my nose in those dusty old tomes.” he said, offering a smile. “what is it they say? new year, new me?”

👻 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ─────────── it was a last resort for freddy. the gang had been hitting dead ends with their findings. the phrase of when hand and body unite was a little too vague. thus, leading freddy to seek out the help of someone else who might have better understanding. traps and paranormal endeavours was his bread and butter. curses .. well, that was a new phenomenon. “ sacrificial curses or cursed towns ? i’m still figuring that one out myself. uh, got anything from 1666 ? ” he asked. a small smile appeared on freddy’s features at that. he could appreciate someone who also invested their time into these sort of books. the man had almost forgotten the rush he got when researching new mysteries. he had missed this even if the circumstances were less than ideal. “ yeah, that would be great. thank you. maybe we should just start from the beginning and go from there. ”

thackery had sunk a good deal of his free time into reading every occult and occult-adjacent book the library could provide since coming to elias. and while he hadn't read every book the library had to offer, he'd certainly read enough to have helpful reading recommendations with regards to books about curses.
"1666? that is a rather old tome you're searching for, hm?" he asked, giving a thoughtful hum. "if we do have anything from that far back, it's most likely In Library Use Only." and then, "let's head towards the right aisles first and then we can narrow it down from there." he offered. it would be easier to figure out which books would be the most helpful when they're in front of them, after all.

“i do, actually.” thackery replied with a nod. “most actions seem to have consequences of some sort - good or bad. unfortunately, one never knows exactly how the past will affect the present until it’s too late.” time was a tricky subject, however, so there was always room for discussing other possibilities.

Max didn’t want to bother Thackery if he didn’t have to. He’d caused enough problems and knew that honestly all he’d be good for was setting a plan in motion, whenever they had a plan. But thankfully he hadn’t seen any of the sisters around town, so he didn’t feel like he had to worry all that much. But still, knowing some things sure seemed like a better plan than sitting around relaxing just because there wasn’t trouble from the problems that he specifically caused.
He let out a big sigh. “I don’t know what I’m looking for is the problem.” Just going into a place and saying he wanted to know about magic, real magic felt like it would yield too many results. “Hey I read,” he pouted. Sometimes. “No, I’m just looking for books on like magic. I know that’s vague, but well… my lack of belief got us into this mess, so I just want to know more about…” he waved his hands around. “I don’t know. What about history books? That might be a good place to start.” Sure boring, but that felt right.
~ ☆ ~
a soft laugh left him at max’s protest. “my apologies - i’m sure you read plenty. perhaps i’ll ask your recommendation for next week’s book club.” he hummed, half-teasing. he wasn’t really about to judge max’s reading habits - or lack thereof - but the boy’s response was entertaining nonetheless.
thackery’s countenance softened slightly, though, as max admitted that he was indeed here for research purposes. “yes, of course. history books are an excellent place to start.” he nodded. “i’ve thumbed through my fair share of volumes since coming to elias myself, so i’m sure i can pull a few relevant selections from the shelf for you, if you’d like.” he offered, gesturing for max to follow him as he lead the way towards the history books in question.
