My Smurfs AU

(A long time ago I tried to establish a personal AU where I mixed all of the Smurfs medias together to create something coherent, but it became too old and I discontinued it. I'm back with another attempt and better drawings to explain better.)

What are Smurfs?

Smurfs are three-apple high blue creatures living hidden from the human population. Thanks to their magical nature, Smurfs live way longer than us humans, up to 1000 years and even slightly more with any luck. To this day, there are only two known villages of Smurfs: Smurf Village, located in King Gerard's kingdom within a forest that is sometimes simply dubbed as "the Smurf Forest", and Smurfy Grove, which was located in the Forbidden Forest until Gargamel's attack, after which it was relocated in the Smurf Forest not so far from Smurf Village. Male and female Smurfs had been kept separate for centuries, eventually forgetting about each other's existence; as such, males believed there were only male Smurfs, while females believed there were only female Smurfs, until they were reunited again. Why they lived apart is still a mystery.

How are Smurfs born?

How Smurfs are born is a mystery as well; they come to the world delivered by a stork during a night of blue moon, but where they do come from and how they are born exactly is unknown. Because they are not born from two parents like other creatures, no one in the Smurf community is blood-related, though they are all raised by their village's leader and can form familial bonds with each other.

However, there is another way to give birth to a Smurf; using alchemy.

Differences between natural-born Smurfs and homonculi Smurfs.

At first glance, both type of Smurfs look the same. But one watchful eye can easily tell the two apart.

For natural-born Smurfs, every aspect of them is blue: blue skin, clear blue eyes, blue hair for female Smurfs and a blue beard for older males!

Smurfs created with the help of alchemy, or as they are called "homonculi Smurfs", display some physical differences from their natural-born counterparts. The first obvious trait is their eye-colour; instead of being sky-blue, they tend to lean into turquoise. The second most obvious trait is their hair (or beard for older males) colour, which isn't blue but mostly resemble human hair colours. It is because the ingredients to create a Smurf include a hair from their creator, which not only give the homonculus Smurf the same hair colour, but also binds them to their maker. Indeed, the recipe was created by a wizard who practiced dark arts in both alchemy and magic, and who wanted to enslave his creations for his own malevolent intentions. This finding was deemed too dangerous by other magic-users who burned all books containing the recipe - however some survived, including a grimoire owned by Gargamel who used it to create Smurfette. Fortunately, it is possible to free the homonculus Smurf from their creator's influence:

• After the creator's death, the link between them and their creation is naturally broken, freeing the Smurf from their influence at last.

• Their creator can break the bond with an oath to free their homonculus, though this method is not used a lot since their maker needs to be a good person in the first place (or must be coaxed into doing it).

• With someone who can break the bond using magic; the best example is Smurfette, who was created to fulfill Gargamel's wicked schemes involving the Smurfs. Papa Smurf sought help from an old fairy friend, who gave one of her hair so he could nulify Gargamel's influence on Smurfette. Thanks to Papa's own magic, she then turned from dark-haired to blonde and, because the fairy already put an oath onto the hair she gave, she walked off a free Smurf.

How does the Smurf community works?

A Smurf village is usually composed of 99 simple villagers plus one leader, though the number can vary because of unseen events. Some Smurfs have a specific role within the community, but for many it's often versatile. Money doesn't exist, everybody gets their even share in term of housing, food and clothing. Outside influence, but mostly human's, is seen negatively as they are considered a terrible example as a society.

There is also a colour code with the hat (not the rest of the clothes) to indicate a Smurf's rank:

• Members of Smurf Village wear white, while members of Smurfy Grove wear beige. Note: some Smurfs with specific activities will wear hats with different colours and/or shape, however they are deemed as working clothes and do not specify a rank within the community.

• In both villages, the current leader wears red. It must also be noted the leader will always be older than the Smurfs they must lead, unless a previous generation is still living within the village.

• In both villages, previous leaders who stepped out of their role wear yellow. The only known Smurf still alive with such a statut is Grandpa Smurf.

There are however differences between the two villages:

• Smurf Village is almost entirely inhabited by male Smurfs (with few females within the community), and the naming system is based on their dominant personality traits / their role / their main talent. However, this name can be modified, for example if the Smurf's personnality drastically changes (Grouchy Smurf after the fly's bite), or if their role changes (Papa Smurf when he became the village's leader). Though they can defend themselves with tricks, they are not warriors and tend to avoid confrontation as much as possible to preserve themselves.

• Smurfy Grove is entirely inhabited by female Smurfs (for now anyway). The naming system is based on the Smurf's personnality as a whole mixed with a natural element, and they keep it for the rest of their life unless there is a necessity to change it. Because they've lived in the Forbidden Forest, where nature itself is unpredictable, they've learned how to defend themselves in any circonstances, making those Smurfs great warriors who don't hesitate to come rescue their neighbors when they need help.

Smurfs ages

• 0 - 50: Babies. • 50 - 100: Smurflings (children - early adolescence). • 100 - 150: Adolescents - Young adults. • 150 - 300: Adults (males start to grow a beard around that time). • 300 - 500: "Mature" adults (white hair starts to appear on both males and females). • 500 - 1000: Seniors (by this time all hair turned white). • 1000 +: "Venerables" (it is rare a Smurf reach the age of 1000 years old and beyond, much more so while keeping all their youngful energy like Grandpa Smurf).

Note: The time spans listed here are only an approximation of a Smurf's life periods. For example, how adulthood is lived depend from one Smurf to the other.
