time to eat a Few of my words. niall lynch may not be All bad.

ronan is a lot like niall. ronan is quite literally of niall. niall fills ronan with feelings. so many feelings ronan doesn’t know what to do with them all. they spill over & cause problems but also solve problems. in this way ronan lynch is a lot like his father.

the mirroring between the first chapter of greywaren and one of the last captures this mirrored life ronan and niall have.

we start where we end, time being circular and all that. a new generation taking on the kingdom that is the barns. this time ronan and adam have a stronger love than mór and niall. this time they are both aware the barns are a temporary kingdom. a place to come back to but not to stay forever. both niall and ronan love the barns. adam and mór are both pulled away and a little piece of niall and ronan breaks because of it. but the beautiful thing about this mirror is that the reflection changes, the story changes. ronan is not a tragedy. ronan and adam are not doomed. they are meant to end up together. in the end it will always be “very good” for them. because ronan doesn’t want to get rid of his feelings, his memories. he feels everything, he remembers everything, he gains memories and in doing so gains his full self. ronan and niall are mirrors but niall always meant for his children to be better than he was even if that sentiment got lost along the way sometimes. ronan lynch is and is not his father. adam is and is not mór. the barns are paradise from beginning to end.

#said my literature a level #dont FULLY believe in the niall lynch redemption arc the man is still very flawed but at least we know more #imo this is less a redemption arc and more a backstory #like none of it really explains/justifies how he acted post-aurora but at least we know he was good too #tdt #trc

Other people have said it already but I love how to anyone who’s only read TDT Adam is Just Some Guy and he’s completely batshit. He’s lying about everything. He collects depressed gay people. He doesn’t answer a text. He rides for eight hours on a motorcycle he doesn’t know how to control listening to sociology notes. He’s faking tarot readings. He’s scrying in basements. He’s tracking beetle activity in Cambridge. He hates Declan. He’s breaking up with his boyfriend’s soulless body. He’s driving to Connecticut to find his boyfriend’s unconscious pet raven. He hates himself. He is obsessed with money. He’s a mechanic. He has a Virginia accent. No he doesn’t. He’s an asshole. He will literally lose himself in the sea of unconsciousness to vibe with the energy of his otherworldly boyfriend. He is polite to the evil entity that wants to kill him. Every time he’s alone he tries to talk himself out of loving Ronan and it never works. He has a secret job with the American government. Without taking his eyes off the sky he takes the ring and puts it on. Why is Ronan obsessed with this guy.

re: last post, none of this is exactly new information but i so much want to dig my teeth into the reading of dreaming/dreamness as loose metaphor for autism / developmental neurodivergence in general / in her words "being on the spectrum" (i hate this phrasing but i'm not gonna complain about it bc she is uhhh clearly not writing from a neurotypical pov to say the least) as opposed to the imo more obvious association of chronic/mental illness

like i don't think this is meant to like, carry over directly into diagnoses/neurotypes of characters but also reading ronan and hennessy in particular as autistic is FASCINATING. the sensory overload and the communication breakdowns and the finding someone anyone who gets your brain weirdness and latching on tight to them in the face of the whole rest of humanity being hostile and incomprehensible

and i think this trilogy is presenting some thoughts in the vague direction of the social model vs medical model of disability, particularly in the conflict between ronan and hennessy -- ronan has already gone through a whole four books of coming to terms with his dreaming (and his queerness and his neurodivergence) and feels increasingly strongly that it is the world around him that has to change, he (& matthew & the family of dreamer kids) shouldn't have to adapt to a world that is hostile to their existence. dreaming wouldn't be disabling if the world were different.

whereas for hennessy, dreaming has always been actively harmful to her and her loved ones, she resents ronan's attempts to show her its positive sides bc they never feel genuine to her, (++ there's a lot more to say here about how neurodivergence + chronic illness + queerness are all treated differently in white men vs black women) and she ultimately wants a "cure" in the form of shutting down the ley line. and, imo most importantly, both of these motivations (if not their actions lmao) are presented as true and sympathetic bc there's no one correct way to view one's disability!
