so, in arc 1, windclan goes through five apprentices -- runningbrook, whitetail, webfoot, tawnyfur, and gorsepaw. the only cats that receive apprentices are tornear, onewhisker, and mudclaw, with tornear and onewhisker receiving two each
this makes the timeline for their apprentices extremely tight. for tornear's apprentices, the change from runningpaw -> runningbrook and tawnykit -> tawnypaw happens as far as can be gleaned at the start of rising storm, as there are no announcements during gatherings either in fire and ice or rising storm. tawnypaw becomes tawnyfur in dangerous path, which means that her apprenticeship was less than or around 3 moons
for onewhisker's apprentices, whitetail is still listed as whitepaw in the rising storm allegiances, but presumably receives her name during the book as gorsepaw is apprenticed to onewhisker at the end of rising storm. onewhisker doesn't actually mention that his former apprentice has been made a warrior, only that gorsepaw is now his apprentice
having tornear and onewhisker double up on apprentices is kinda crazy when there are four other fully grown warriors from the clan's inception in arc 1 (not counting the apprentices who become warriors and retroactively added warriors) AND barkface. tallstar and deadfoot do not train apprentices during the main series, and ashfoot and morningflower never receive one

also to say/summarize bc i feel like i yap a lot: i'd be a lot more forgiving about the whole soft rule/cultural expectation(?) of she-cats not having kits as deputy or leader if there was actual in-text conflict and thought about it, like there is about medicine cats being unable to have kits
right now, outside of bluestar, it's just a rule that the authors are aware about. the cats abide by this rule -- ie, doestar, heatherstar, russetfur, and leopardstar and such never had a mate or kits and neither does cloverfoot, and then ivypool and wind runner had their kits before becoming deputy/leader -- and canon bends to the will of this rule, as reedwhisker was transported back in time seemingly so that mistystar did not have a litter while deputy. but the cats themselves are seemingly not consciously aware of this rule anymore since bluestar, and thus there is no in-text conflict or criticism which is frustrating and boring
leafstar is the only she-cat who has had kits in the nursery while leader, and im pretty sure squirrelflight is the only she-cat to have kits in the nursery while deputy.
(there’s a case to be made for mistyfoot nursing kits while deputy, but the erins have, like, bent over backwards to insist that reedwhisker was born before stonefur or even crookedstar died, so)
for toms with kits in the nursery while leader: oakstar, pinestar, hailstar, crookedstar, firestar, onestar, bramblestar
for toms with kits in the nursery while deputy: reedfeather, shellheart, raggedpelt, deadfoot, lionheart, tigerclaw, whitestorm, brambleclaw

so this line of thinking in of itself is misogynistic. women are denied work opportunities, promotions, etc because they have a baby, are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or simply just have the capacity to become pregnant. its just another way that women's reproduction is controlled
to have this trend uncritically replicated in warrior cats -- a book series for children -- is deeply damaging to young readers. they might internalize the idea that women cannot lead while like, breastfeeding (or lead at all. there is a serious lack of mollies in leadership positions)
i stress uncritically because bluestar's situation is the only time where leadership and motherhood is examined critically. any other time, its brushed over, or not mentioned at all, or simply doesnt happen.
there are, of course, only two instances to draw from, but i dont remember the fact that squirrelflight was deputy being mentioned when she had spark and alder. we didnt really get to see them as kits, but it was like her being deputy was a non-fact so that bramblestar could get his bloodline kits. leafstar is, as skyclan often is, a special case. she gets told off for leaving camp while pregnant and stresses about the potential of having to choose between skyclan and her kits, though this is a non issue that is never really presented to leader toms with kits, or if they are, they aren't really presented as so... overly emotional and neurotic?
apart from bluestar, we also never get to see mollies with leadership ambitions worrying about or mulling over having to like, sacrifice having a family for upward mobility in the clan. bristlefrost, like a year old when she was deputized and had a love interest, does not give any thought to the fact that she would not be able to have kits because of the clan. we have no idea what cloverfoot thinks about mates or kits; if she wanted a family at all or if she gave up a future to be tigerheart's deputy
the books treat it like a silent rule. no conflict about it, just an implied understanding. this is how the world works. it is, like, half a rule, according to the authors, but there's just no internal thought or debate or conflict about it at all
Tumblr media
all of this also implies that a she-cat leader or deputy is raising the kits entirely alone, which really isn't the case. unless you're crookedstar or graystripe, fathers generally aren't involved in canon, but there's still the elders and, of course, other queens and mollies. bristlefrost does not think about what deputyship means for her own future family but she does promise to help raise spotfur's kits. sorrelstripe steps in to feed finchkit and flamekit when sparkpelt is ill. millie and graystripe spend time looking after blossomfall's litter. the burden of childcare does not rest solely on the mother and if there is another nursing queen, neither does feeding. kittens are weaned around 6 to 8 weeks and the mother would not have to stay the whole time in the nursery
there's also the fact that the clans have a two-person leadership system. when bluestar was ill, fireheart and the senior warriors stepped up. when bramblestar was a dead body, squirrelflight (and lionblaze) stepped up. if squirrelstar, ivypool, cloverfoot, or leafstar (the only non-medcat mollies in leadership positions rn) suddenly had kittens in star, their clans would not spontaneously combust
anyway. tl;dr: misogyny bad. uncritically denying fictional women reproductive freedom bad
leafstar is the only she-cat who has had kits in the nursery while leader, and im pretty sure squirrelflight is the only she-cat to have kits in the nursery while deputy.
(there’s a case to be made for mistyfoot nursing kits while deputy, but the erins have, like, bent over backwards to insist that reedwhisker was born before stonefur or even crookedstar died, so)
for toms with kits in the nursery while leader: oakstar, pinestar, hailstar, crookedstar, firestar, onestar, bramblestar
for toms with kits in the nursery while deputy: reedfeather, shellheart, raggedpelt, deadfoot, lionheart, tigerclaw, whitestorm, brambleclaw

some chunks of my rewrite windclan family tree as i try to iron it out
starting with quickwhisker's (onestar) side
Tumblr media
tallstar is hidden in the ...
palebird and woollytail only had bristlebark and wrenflight because palebird having five surviving kits is way too many. i have given them two kits who survived until apprenticeship that do not show up here
i may move morningflower to be wrenflight's sister and quick's aunt to make her age cleaner
ryestalk is no longer stagleap and doespring's sister as i think that morning and mud being mates is way more interesting than maintaining that relationship
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's ryestalk. i will likely at some point give her another parent
i've removed flytail from palebird's line and hit him with the woman beam. i don't intend to do this often, but windclan just has so many toms compared to mollies, its absurd. right now, she and thornears (tornear) are the parents of whitetail and runningbrook, which may change
anttail is gorsetail. i've changed his name bc there are too many gorses in wc
Tumblr media
ashfoot has been removed as morning and quick's sister and given plumclaw and crowfur as parents and darkflood (darkfoot) as a brother. i originally really wanted to keep them all together bc i feel like she is so often kicked out but man. it is tough.
eventually i'll find other parents for webfoot and stoneclaw & thrushwing
alt choices i am considering:
like i mentioned, moving morningflower to palebird's second litter. if i did this, i might move stoneclaw and thrushwing to be quickwhisker's littermates and give quick their story from sotc. i could do it anyway, too
i may change darkflood's name back to darkfoot for the memes
i might change thornears to be stone and thrush's father, and pigeonflight to running and white's. i could also make darkflood the father and just have running, web, and white all be littermates, but that hurts genetic diversity a little. pigeon or dark would eventually make breeze and heather like, second cousins, tho, unless i give pigeon different parents
a big problem with windclan cats and figuring out generations is that they are all old as fuck

patch notes:
added tawnykit/tawnyfur's wiki link
pigeonflight - he's been added. per leopardstar's honor, he is probably still alive? but per onestar's confession, he doesn't rejoin the clan, so he probably dies while windclan is away from the territory
speckletail - totally forgot that mistlekit shows up during this book. i've tagged her as (expecting kits) to make snowkit's age make a little bit more sense
snowbird - apparently she is ratscar's littermate, not just his sister? why would the erins do this. sigh. she's been added to this allegiances and retroactively added to the itw ones, and i've adjusted her age on all others
i made full "canon" allegiances for the start of fire and ice: google doc link
this is a part of a series im doing where i've made the full allegiances for the first book of every arc in order. now i'm making allegiances for other main series books
here is the masterpost for all the allegiances
"canon" is in quotations because a lot of this is guesswork about who logically would be around at that point in time, but aren't listed in the allegiances or mentioned in the book
this is mainly meant to be a resource for fanworks
general stuff that's still the same as last time:
wiki pages are linked to character's names
med cat = cleric
characters are listed by age. where there are no concrete ages, i make my best guess
tc is the only clan without a "kit" rank as all kits born into or taken into the clan have known parents
this is where things start to get pretty messy due to the sheer number of prequel cats i need to make decisions about, pretty much entirely in rc and sc. i'll provide insight into why the ones i have listed are still around as these prequel cats do just tend to randomly fall off the timeline with no explanation or canonical deaths
thunderclan:
cinderkit and brackenkit are listed as kits instead of apprentices bc they are not apprenticed until like 100 pages in
swiftpaw is still listed as an apprentice bc he is apprenticed in like the first chapter
ashkit, fernkit, and tulipkit are listed. elderkit is already dead and tulipkit dies this book
shadowclan:
they lose a LOT of cats from the previous allegiances due to their last mentioned appearances being at the end of yellowfang's secret and not a lot of them reappearing in exile from shadowclan or tigerclaw's fury
whitepaw/whitethroat - not mentioned until rising storm, but needs to be a warrior by then. i made him a kit in the itw allegiances and thus now he's an apprentice
applepaw/applefur and ratpaw/ratscar - not mentioned until tigerclaw's fury but need to be warriors by then. i made them kits in the itw allegiances and thus they are now apprentices
brightflower, crowtail, archeye, featherstorm, hollyflower - alive and rejoined shadowclan's camps at the end of exile from shadowclan
volewhisper - alive and rejoined shadowclan's camp at the end of exile from shadowclan, but specifically needs to die before blackfoot returns due to continuity issues with blackfoot's reckoning
ashheart - not mentioned or listed in tpb, but alive bc she needs to make semi-canon kits with cinderfur in rising storm
scorchwind - not mentioned or listed in tpb, but alive bc he needs to make rowanstar and cedarheart with darkflower
rowanberry, deerfoot, flintfang, and fernshade - are in tigerclaw's fury
wolfstep - is mentioned to still be alive when tigerclaw first comes to shadowclan in blackfoot's reckoning
riverclan:
mistyfoot - reedwhisker is not listed because i've gone with the timeline given in tnp for him. mistyfoot's other kits are listed
mosspelt - listed as a warrior instead of an expecting queen as her and silverstream's kits need to be close enough in age for her to feed/foster them, and graystripe and silverstream haven't even met yet
mallowtail and birdsong - they are still around after shadepelt and heavystep receive their full names
frogleap - he dies later
grasswhisker, shimmerpelt, lakeshine, cedarpelt, piketooth, and timberfur - mentioned to be alive after the flood that kills frogleap
beetlenose, ottersplash, sedgecreek, voleclaw, and vixenleap - mentioned to join tigerclan and/or lionclan, so they are safe for the entirely of tpb
rippleclaw and emberdawn - are at nightpelt's first gathering as a leader
skyheart and reedtail - need to make kits together in mothwing's secret, so they are safe for the entirety of tpb
windclan:
thrushwing - again, the canonnity of her character is questionable, but windclan needs more she-cats. there's also an unnamed non-morningflower tortoiseshell mentioned a couple times and i think she works fine to fill in that vague role
morningflower - the way that she and gorsekit are described make it sound like she gave birth like the day before fireheart and graystripe showed up, so she is tagged with (expecting kits)
tawnykit/tawnyfur - an apprentice in rising storm and a warrior in a dangerous path, so she is likely a kit around this time
eaglekit (ashfoot's kit) - not listed bc i think they have died
elders - there are about 5 unnamed elders described while windclan is crossing the road. the only specific elders that have strong cases to be around are crowfur (he is in a forest of secrets) and cloudrunner (he is gorsepaw's father)
i have them listed under rogues and loners, but sometime during this book it's likely that stagleap and sorrelshine rejoin windclan after the clan returns to their territory
cats outside clans:
shadowclan exiles get their own group
stagleap (wc) and sorrelshine are listed here
princess is listed as (expecting kits) as cloudtail has not been born yet
