If you knew as many women as I know, who are forced or coaxed into marriages, where the man uses them only for sex, to birth kids, to take care of his parents, to iron his clothes and serve tea to his friends, with absolutely no regard for her well being or happiness, and you saw women just tagging along walking behind them, hands full with kids and a belly full with another one, doing things on command existing as nothing but to serve them, you’d want to set the men on fire too.

Sometimes I feel like I often confuse myself by making things more complicated.
But at least I'm happy with the progress . I finally understand the point.

The state of the state
The dance of destruction brought about by the Amphan– that too at a time coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic– has been TERRIFYING.
These are images of my own locality, where the damage has been relatively less. WE LOST SO MANY TREES :((((
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is only the tip of the iceberg.
College Street, housing Asia’s largest book market (a heaven for book-lovers like me), is practically in a submerged state.
The airport of Kolkata is totally waterlogged.
My lovely city– my BEAUTIFUL city, Kolkata, the ‘Kallolini Tilottama’ as we lovingly call her– is totally destroyed.
Two of our beautiful neighbouring districts– North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas– are totally destroyed.
The state of West Bengal is like a heap of ruins right now. There has also been extensive damage in Odisha and Bangladesh.
I feel so blessed for all the things I have right now, because many people around me– people CLOSE to me– haven’t been as lucky as I have.
My family is alive and healthy. Our house is intact. Our water supply is intact– at least right now. We are not facing a food crisis– at least right now. Our electricity is intact except for a brief spell of load-shedding, The network coverage (though the Internet has been slow) on my humble BSNL phone has been decent, and my Airtel Wifi is back, albeit after a daylong bunk. The Tata Sky is miraculously intact. I was lucky enough to be at home during the Amphan crisis (I mean– COVID duties combined with intra-cyclone travel would have been a nightmare).  I have so much to be thankful for!
I thank my Tumblr friends for your kind prayers and wishes… special shoutout to @incurablescribbler, @bleedinknight, @dhvlmg, @hermioneaubreymiachase, @boswati, @emocheezeball, @jimikkikammal!

Hugs and prayers,
Shubhra

A to-watch list of Bengali movies (for myself and all my Tumblr friends)!
Please remember that I have seen only some of these, and intend to see the rest because of the way they have earned a lot of praise… but it is a good rec list nevertheless for those who are just beginning to check out Bengali movies! You will be far from disappointed!
Tagging @eldritch-crone because you were interested :)
And feel free to add more to this list: @radhikerani @heyifinallyhaveablog @walburgablack @theawkwardconfusedturtle96 @shaonharryandpannisim @disha-chowdhury @enigma-the-mysterious @spiderrpcrker @cynassa @medhasree @nomoredisguises
1. The ‘golden era’ classics:
a) The Apu trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar): The quintessential coming-of-age movie series that will make you smile, cry and smile some more.
b) The Goopy-Bagha series (Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, Hirak Rajar Deshe): Some ‘ghostly’ goodness, oodles of humour and even golden words of wisdom that are presented in a super fun package!
c) The Feluda movies (Sonar Kella, Joy Baba Felunath): It is a CRIME to reveal plots of detective movies. Go, watch.
d) Jamalaye Jibanto Manush: This heartwarming comedy about a living man landing up in Yama’s abode is just!!!!
e) Deep Jwele Jaai: A melancholy tale of a nurse in a psychiatric hospital (remade into the Telugu Chivaraku Migiledi and the Hindi Khamoshi). The showstopper, obviously, is the sensuous Ei Raat Tomar Aamar song!
f) Meghe Dhaka Tara: An angsty, heart-wrenching tale revolving around the Partition of India.
2. The recent delights:
a) Gumnaami: A thrilling take on the mystery surrounding Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s disappearance!
b) The detective stuff (Eagoler Chokh, Badshahi Angti, Byomkesh Phire Elo, Satyanweshi, Mitin Mashi to name a few): Relax, no spoilers on my behalf!
c) Konttho: The moving tale of the struggles (and victory) of an RJ who loses his voice following laryngectomy. I hear this is about to be remade into Shabdam in Malayalam!
d) Rajkahini: Another angsty tale surrounding the Partition of India. Special mentions for the stellar performances by ladies across different age groups and the Bharata-Bhagya-Bidhata at the end.(Unpopular opinion: The remake, Begum Jaan, is a mess.)
e) Uma: The moving tale of a little girl fighting a terminal disease, and her father who is determined to fulfill her wish of witnessing Durga Puja in Kolkata. Based on the true events surrounding the life and death of Evan Leversage, who lived in Canada.
f) Bhooter Bhobishyot: While it does have subtle political undertones, this is another ghostly entertainer that will leave you in splits!
g) Generation Ami: A brilliantly told tale revolving around the forever fresh theme of inter-generational clashes.
h) Chatushkone: A thriller that is hard to summarise :P
i) Shabdo: What happens when a foley artist, working for the creation of ambient sounds in films, gradually gets trapped in a world where these sounds overpower conversational sounds?
j) Nirbasito: Loosely based on Taslima Nasreen’s life, the movie revolves around a female author exiled for writing about religious fundamentalism.
There are many, many others I am too tired to write about. Some important examples are Ek Je Chhilo Raja, Hemlock Society, Autograph, Durga Sahay, Posto, Ramdhanu and Chitrangada. Deliberately omitting Chokher Baali from this list… the entire website seems to know about that movie and there are other movies we need to talk about!
Have fun watching the movies this lockdown! You might be able to access many of these on the app Hoichoi which exclusively features Bengali entertainment content!

Mahabharat scenarios
So I’m watching mahabharat on tv nowadays and I just watched the scene where Mahamantri Vidur told everyone Pandu should be the Raja and all I could think was
Dhritarashtra: I’m gonna be king soon!! I’m so ready this is what I was born for.
Vidur: I’m about to end this mans whole career

Hindi imposition-- a few thoughts
With relation to the posts by my friends @carminavulcana, @walburgablack and @heyifinallyhaveablog here, here and here, I was about to make a long, long, LONG post about the problem of Hindi imposition which can be read under the cut, but since we could do with some positive vibes amidst this chaos, all I would like to ask is, can we try and learn an Indian language amidst the lockdown? Like it will serve the dual purpose of good utilisation of time and coming a step closer to a more united India!
Back to the original post now.

for anyone who lives in Bangalore, know that there has been a threat of a possible terrorist attack in the following week so please be really careful and avoid going to malls, movie theatres or on popular streets that are especially crowded. My own apartment building is taking precautions and making sure everyone that enters and leaves the building is accounted for. I know that there are many other apartment complexes across the city taking these same precautions.
