So, it's official. It is who we thought it is.

I stand by my judgement with orphaning fics and deleting them from Tumblr as I write new ones to replace them with. Please be patient as this process will take a good year or so because I cannot write all that fast, especially as I'm currently in my final year of university.

As always, fuck Wilbur Soot and I support and stand with Shelby Shubble.

I'm just a fanfiction writer in a big community, but as someone whose written the majority of the fanworks they have about MCYT I feel like talking about certain things is probably important.

First of all, I am so ridiculously proud of Shelby Shubble for coming out about her abusive relationship. She is so brave and I applaud her for it. Her story is sadly super common, and her talking about her situation has most definitely woken up some people to theirs and has started their healing journeys. It was very brave of her to take that step to help people.

Secondly, I will address the elephant in the room. It is heavily implied that Shelby's abuser was a very popular content creator who I have written about extensively. Though I did not go looking for evidence, plenty has been provided for me and, though most is circumstancial, there is too much 'coincidence' in it for me to ignore it. I will be steadily distancing myself from him and furthermore his band over the next few months (it is a bit like cutting off a burn for me). All of my works featuring him will be slowly orphaned on AO3, replaced with a newly written fic, and those fics will be deleted from Tumblr.

I wish Shelby Shubble the best and I look forward to continuing to watch her content. She is a wonderful content creator who has had my heart for a long time. If you haven't yet watched her before she came out with her story, I strongly advise you do.

I've opted out on the tumblr settings now, and I'm glad that they've flagged it as an option, but I've gotta admit it makes me very uneasy that I have to consistently find ways to try to opt out of AI (or even people) using my work without my consent, rather than having my rights as a writer protected as first priority.

fanfic writers, here’s a friendly reminder that you are not less of a writer if you haven’t posted anything in years, you are not less of a writer if your works aren’t as popular as other writers’, you are not less of a writer if some trolls left you rude comments (they either just want your attention or are simply intimidated/threatened by your talent), you are not less of a writer if you write short one-shots instead of a 100k novel-length fanfic, you are not less of a writer if you’re not satisfied with your writing (I promise you it’s so much better than you think, you should be proud of yourself), you are not less of a writer if you’re not comfortable posting any of your works at all.

you are always as valid as any other fellow writers out there.

another reminder: fanfic writing is not a competition, and it’s not a job. don’t put so much pressure on yourself. always remember, the point of writing fanfictions is that we get to have fun, escape reality into the world we create in which we can write anything we want.

it stops being a getaway and a safe place the second we treat writing fanfic as a job or a competition. no, you’re not writing for anybody. you’re writing for you. this world you create is just you and your blorbos. have fun. it’s your getaway.

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

The left example: ✅✅✅

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

the problem with reading and writing leading to a strong vocabulary is that you tend to know the vibe of words instead of their meanings.

if I used this word in a sentence, would it make sense? absolutely. if you asked me what it meant, could I tell you? absolutely not.

Basic rundown:

They are all 3 sentences long

Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation

Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever

No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story

The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post

Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly

There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate
