Garden Kisses Chapter Three
Tumblr media
Aaliyah always loved the dinner they had on the first night. though the food had always been something different, most of it stayed the same. the way they sat around the table, the way the food was passed around, who started what first, usually steven picking at belly.
liyah had always sat in the middle of belly and conrad. jeremiah and steven sat across from them, the layla on the left of steven and laurel right in front of her. susannah always sat at the head of the table.
the mothers' bond had been thicker than blood. they always said they were soul sisters, each coming from different backgrounds, but coming together with love for one another and treating each of the other children as their own.
belly and liyah had been discussing their plans for the night, the latter had already told her mother about the bonfire and was allowed to go. belly on the other hand hadn't.
liyah was trying to convince belly to go with her so she wouldn't be alone, even saying that they didn't have to go right away and that they could go after their swim. belly sat, weighing the options, ultimately deciding against.
they had been interrupted by the loud laughter that was coming from across the table. looking up, liyah saw that steven had been showing jeremiah something on his phone. shaking her head, she knew it was only seconds away before laurel had interrupted them by telling them about the no-phone rule.
"steven, i swear to god if you look at that phone one more time. i'm putting in the screen basket."
every summer, since the kids were old enough to even have a phone, laurel and layla had put in a "no phones at the dinner table" rule. and throughout the years they slimmed it down to, "no phones at the dinner table on the first night" rule. aaliyah was usually good with that since she didn't really use her phones that much the first day or night, wanting to soak in everything at once even the things that had changed.
"we just want to see your beautiful faces." susannah had said smiling at the boys.
"can dinner be a screen-free zone?" layla had questioned also smiling at the boys.
steven who obviously hadn't been paying attention had scrolled on his phone again.
"steven." jeremiah had said to the boy in disbelief, he quickly grabbed steven's phone and stood up.
"dude! are you kidding me?" steven let out as jeremiah launched his phone onto the seat behind liyah.
"boom! nailed it."
"okay, we get it. you've been working out."
"oh you're just jealous because jere has a better body than you." belly said poking at her brother.
"uh no, actually, it's all about the lean look now." steven began to defend himself.
"oh really?" liyah questioned, quirking her eyebrow upwards as a smirk began to settle on her face.
"yeah, otherwise you can't wear tailored suits." the boy finished, earning a couple of laughs from the table.
"hey," liyah said turning toward the older fisher boy, "when are you leaving for training camp con?"
the table had gotten quiet as everyone had turned towards the two. jeremiah had begun to look between them before saying that his brother had quit football.
the room had grown into a thick silence, steven and liyah breaking it.
"what—dude?—"
"wait really?" steven looked towards susannah, "are you kidding me, man? i'd kill to play college ball." steven said in shock.
"you'd kill to get off the bench." liyah had said under her breath, earning a snicker from belly.
"he can always change his mind." susannah smiled at the children.
"not gonna change my mind." conrad had said, interrupting his mother. "anyways, i was just gonna sit on the bench all season."
"well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you gonna do all summer?"
steven sat for a moment, "oh, dude, you can work at the club. yeah, with me and jere. yeah."
"I'm not gonna work at the club." conrad laughed sarcastically.
"wait, you guys are working this summer?" belly and liyah had questioned the two boys in front of them.
"yeah, i'm lifeguarding, and steven's working at the snack shop." the two fist bumped, jeremiah's smile dropping a little as he saw the disbelief on liyah's face.
every summer the two had hung out. whether it be walks around the town, swimming at the beach, having picnics whenever wherever, or even working at the little ice cream shack that was a couple minutes away from fisher home. they were always together.
"oh, belly, liyah. i almost forgot. i have a surprise for you." susannah broke the silence by getting up and picking up two letters from the cabinet behind her.
she handed belly both the letters, belly handing liyah hers and the girl's face lit up.
"so, this is why you had to stop by the country club." laurel let out, shaking her head disappointedly. susannah just smiled at her as she sat back down.
"what, uh, what is that?" steven said, craning his neck over the table to get a look at the letters in the two girls hands.
liyah hid the envelope in her chest shooting steven a bothered look, "nosy much steven?"
"i wrangled belly an invitation to be a debutante."
"why does liyah have one?" everyone's head turning towards jeremiah as he questioned.
"well, i was cooking dinner so i didn't have time to pick hers up." layla said lifting up her glass to take a drink.
"wait... wait, seriously?" liyah looked toward her mother in surprise.
her and her parents always talked about liyah wanting to be a debutant, especially since there had been similarities to her debut. the girl's running argument was that if she had practice, she would be perfect on her 18th birthday.
"is that the thing where the girls wear white dresses and curtsy?" belly asked, unsure of herself.
"yes—but, it's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society." liyah quietly corrected belly.
"i know it sounds silly, but I swear it's fun." susannah said, "girls come from all over new England to cousins just to be a part of it. you'll make so many new friends."
laurel reached for her glass taking the last sip of her wine before letting out, "i cannot believe you are still holding on to this archaic dream." getting up to grab the bottle of wine in the kitchen.
when she came back she had shot a look at layla, "and i can't believe that you, are going through with this."
"no, it used to be about finding a husband, but now it's about networking. they teach you leadership skills, like how to market yourself, and it benefits charity."
"hey-- liyah want's to do this, and we've talked it through. so me and daniel decided that it would be a great opportunity for aaliyah. so she can branch out and discover new things." layla said, also pouring herself some more of the wine that laurel had brought out.
"it's, um, like a bat mitzvah."
"it is not like a bat mitzvah." the korean woman snorted, "there is nothing religious about a debutante ball."
"the whole deb scene is bullshit. it's for sheep." conrad let out, uninterested in the conversation.
"no, it's not. it's when a girl has a coming out, it's a formal recognition she's reached maturity." layla had said to conrad.
"oh, sorry. i'm sorry. mature?" steven chocked out.
"yes." susannah and layla had answered the boy.
"belly? aaliyah?" steven pointed at the two young girls infront of him, earning a questioned look from both of them.
the two mothers nodded in confirmation to the boy's question.
"a-a couple of months ago you had a cat funeral. you made us all wear black. and liyah cried because the bow she got for cheer two years ago had her name spelled wrong."
"shut up, steven."
"kiss my ass." liyah and belly had said to the boy, the former kicking him under the table.
"i saw you crying in your room." belly had continued.
"and you are the least mature person i know steven." liyah rolled her eyes at the face the boy made at her, further proving her point.
"wait, mochi died?" liyah said turning to her friend, saddened by the news of the beloved cat.
"dang. i'm sorry, bells." jeremiah had apologized."
"belly. don't you want to get all dressed up?" susannah questioned turning towards the conklin girl.
as she sat and questioned her mother spoke, "it's just not belly's kind of thing. she's our feral little alley cat."
"i'll think about it."
"she'll think about it." susannah said, sitting contently on the girl's words.
dinner had ended a couple minutes after that, the kids putting the dishes in the dishwasher as the moms cleared the table. liyah, belly, steven, and jeremiah had made their way upstairs. steven to the bathroom and the other three to their respective rooms.
—————————————————
sometime had passed, steven and jeremiah could be heard singing their hearts out in the bathroom. belly had been outside aaliyah's door.
"liyah come on." belly had been knocking on the girl's door for the past ten minutes, impatiently and growing tired of waiting for her.
the slightly older girl had been getting ready to head out, she wouldn't be joining belly on her swim but there in support.
"i'm coming, i'm coming." liyah replied, opening the door to her room and earning a finally from the taller girl.
the two made their way down the stairs, passing their mothers who had stopped them on the way.
"hey, night swim?" layla said turning her neck to face the girls.
"night swim."
"hey girls, how many followers on instagram is a lot?" laurel had questioned them, making the girls turn and give confused looks to each other.
"well that depends, is the person famous? or are they verified?" liyah had said once she had turned to face the mothers again.
"what verified?" it was layla's turn to question.
"here let me see," belly had said grabbing the phone from her mother and turning to show liyah, "150,000, yeah that's a lot."
"cleveland castile? i think taylor's dad has a book from him."
"yeah tatay does too." liyah replied before handing laurel her phone back.
the girls had finally made their way to the backyard, spotting conrad taking a hit from a joint.
"damn save some for me connie." liyah had joked as she made her way to the older boy.
"i thought you said smoking pot changes the way your brain processes information.". belly had said, confused as the boy had taken another hit.
"so does your cell phone." conrad replied smartly to the girl.
belly had dived into the pool as liyah had sat next to conrad, dipping her feet in the water as belly had resurfaced.
"you said marijuana messes with white matter." belly stated back to the boy.
"do you even know what white matter is?"
"you said our brains are still developing and that—" belly had trailed off leaving conrad to question her.
"god, do you memorize every single thing that i've ever said?" conrad joked, belly hadn't caught onto the joke.
"get over yourself." belly scoffed, swimming backwards, "i mean, conrad, you're the one who said that-that smoking's dumb and that real athletes don't put shit in their bodies."
"don't be a jackass conrad.". liyah had replied, elbowing the boy before taking the joint out of his hand and taking a hit.
"aaliyah." belly had said sternly, narrowing her eyes at the girl.
"don't judge me bells, you know i've put worse in my body, it's literally in my room right now." liyah had returned the look before taking about her hit and passing the joint to conrad, referring to the blue and purple plastic tube that had been in her jacket pocket since the sunset.
"and i'm not even in season so." liyah had continued.
"i said a lot of stuff, and i'm not an athlete anymore, so..." conrad had trailed off taking the joint from liyah.
"well, i still think you should quit." belly said still looking at liyah, meaning she had been talking about her too.
"What'll you give me if I do?" conrad taunted, earning surprised looks from both liyah and belly. liyah's eyes going wide at the boy's out right flirt.
"nothing. i think you should quit for yourself."
"hey, why are you two considering this debutante thing?" he questioned earning a confused look from liyah.
"i don't know. i mean, it's not like i have anything else going on." belly replied as she began to swim backwards.
"and you know i've been looking forward to this."
"i know "it's extra practice for my 18th" i've heard you say it a thousand times."
"i don't sound like that dickwad." liyah joked, rolling her eyes at the impression conrad did.
"but it's not you." conrad had turned to belly, "don't let my mom make you her little doll just because she never had a daughter."
the conversation began to become really heavy so liah decided to tune it out, getting pulled out of her thoughts when conrad held the joint out to her.
liyah had taken the joint from conrad's grasp again taking a hit, and just as she was blowing out the smoke the back door had opened again, revealing jeremiah and steven.
"first bonfire of the summer!" steven exclaimed as her and jeremiah made their way towards the three.
"all right, we're totally taking my car. you're not driving." jeremiah said, pointing at steven at then end earning a laugh from him.
"come on, man, we're leaving. you ready?" the boy asked rushing conrad in a way.
"can i come, too?" belly moved toward the edge of the pool, place her head on her hands.
"Uh, no." steven let out rudely.
"don't be a dick steven." liyah had said handing conrad the joint back, discreetly though non of the other kids had known of the girl's smoking habit.
not that it was a habit, it was just something she did occasionally.
"the moms are getting everything set up for your movie night." jeremiah had said sweetly to the two girls.
"have fun with the moms!" the boys let out as they walked away from the backyard.
—————————————————
after an hour or two, the two girls had walked in to the house—being hit with the smell of brownies and popcorn.
"hey bells, go put the dvd in. do we have to watch it happened one night??"
"oh i'm sorry, i won't be able to join y'all tonight, i have plans." liyah said, feeling bad that she was ditching the moms on their tradition.
"we know li, and i hope you know you're making up for it tomorrow night.". susannah said poking the girl in her side, earning a small giggle from the girl.
"definitely, i'm gonna go upstairs and get ready." liyah had went around give the moms a hug and kiss good night and ending at her mother in which layla had told her to be safe.
"i will, i promise. i'm not even going to be doing anything just sitting by the fire. also can i take the car? i don't want to walk all that way."
"sure baby, just be safe. you never know what kinds of crazies are on the street at night." earning a yes ma'am she kissed her daughter on the check and made her way to the living room, arms full with snacks.
although liyah had already been ready, she wanted to collect herself before making her way to do something that was slightly out her comfort zone.
making her way to the stairs, liyah had missed the conversation between the other mother daughter duo as she went up the stairs.
liyah opened the door to her room and grabbed her make up bag before sitting down at her vanity and reapplying anything that needed to be fixed up. she did her makeup as fast as she could, the party had started almost an hour ago and she didn't want to be even more late.
the girl made her way out of her room and towards the youngest conklin's door as she noticed it her light had been on. incoming she waiting until she heard a come in.
walking in the room, liyah hadn't noticed the girl had been in the phone. "hey bells i'm leaving, are you sure you don't want to come?"
"yeah, i'm sure. i'm just gonna head to bed."
"belly who are you— oh, hey oliah." the voice in belly's phone let out.
resisting the urge to role her eyes at the voice, and the way her name was pronounced. liyah made her way back to the door and gave belly a goodnight before exiting.
she made her way down the stairs and passed the mothers in the living room giving a quick goodbye as she grabbed the keys to the car.
liyah made her way outside and to the car, getting in and starting it she took a couple of seconds to get settled and connect her phone to the bluetooth. after deciding on a playlist she backed out of the driveway and onto the road. although the drive was only fifteen minutes. liyah sang along to the current sza song that had been playing.
aaliyah had arrived to the beach, thankfully whoever had decided to come came on either their bikes or car-pooled so she had been able to park near the shore. she had spotted the familiar red jeep and had parked next it, liyah turned off the car and gave herself a pep talk before getting out of the vehicle.
"okay, you got this, just take some deep breath's. meet up with the boys and you got this." rubbing her hands from the top of her head and pausing at the nape of her neck, she leaned back closing her eyes.
following her advice, the young teen took a deep breath before opening her eyes taking her seatbelt off and getting out of the car.
she turned and made sure to double lock the car, and began walking towards the beach. the path that she took had been cleared of any fallen debris and was smooth for the most part.
the walk took no longer than three minutes, but the girl had gotten cold on the way down silently cursing herself for not bringing a heavier jacket with her.
all she had on was a light zip up, a cami and jean shorts. maybe she should have checked the weather before leaving the house. but still she pushed forward, shivering a tiny bit.
she had finally made it to the bonfire, in which she was greeted by nobody. she'd hadn't seen anyone that she recognized, also deciding against wearing her glasses so she wouldn't really know if someone she knew had been there.
she walked a little closer to the fire when she saw conrad, he had been sitting with a pretty girl with box braids and a baseball cap on.
not wanting to bother him she moved a little farther, noticing that steven had been in a circle with his arm around a girl's shoulder. realizing that she had been staring a little too much she moved her head around, landing on jeremiah.
the boy had also been in the circle with steven. she made her way over raising her hand and had been ready to call out to jeremiah when the circle dispersed and the tall boy had been left alone.
not totally alone, for he also had his arm around a girl, he leaned close to her to whisper in her ear—earning a giggle from her and a slap on the chest. he began to laugh as well as he leaned down towards the girl again, this time capturing her lips in his.
liyah backed up when she saw this. her heart breaking a little.

Garden Kisses Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Unpacking had to be aaliyah's least favorite thing to do, other than packing in the first place. she had spent some time grabbing the clothes that had been in one the three suitcases she had brought for her vacation. had she over packed? just a little bit, but to the girl she had felt as if she had underpacked. she had been unpacking for a while, not even noticing the sun had begun to set.
quickly, she stopped unpacking and began to run down the stairs. out of the door, to the backyard wanting to catch the rest of the sunset. the beautiful hues of the sun hand always been something aaliyah loved to see. she had loved watching the sunset, especially in the summer, something about the warm weather had always made the colors of the sky even more beautiful. she had made tradition to watch the sunset the first and last day of summer, often joined by jeremiah.
she hadn't really thought of anything when said boy had sat down right next her, she had recognized the smell of salt water every summer around this time. it had been a hint that he had just came back from swimming at the beach with belly, another of one of the many traditions the kids had.
"i think this is the best one yet." jeremiah had said, looking both at the sky and the side of liyahs face. the girl nodded. she didn't necessarily agree her favorite had been the one from 2 years ago.
——————————————————
it wasn't the first or the last day of summer, it was closer to the middle. she had just gotten to the beach after a bike ride with jeremiah, they had went down to the ice cream shop to buy two cones, and hade rode to the beach deciding to watch the sunset there. as her and jeremiah sat there in silence it felt as if the world had disappeared.
the sun had admitted a beautiful glow onto both of their skins. to aaliyah though, jeremiah looked heaven sent. she had always thought the boy was cute, always had and always will. but she hadn't felt this way before. since she had got to cousins her heart had beaten a thousand miles a minute any time a thought of jeremiah crossed her mind. ten times faster than that when she saw him. she had known that summer was going to be different, the boy himself had been different. he had a glow up. his hair became a little longer, he grew taller, he gained more muscle, his face began to mature as well as his voice. i mean what do you expect he was in the summer of his sophomore year a lot had changed.
as the sun began to lower even more and the moon began to show, the two teens sat in silence, appreciative of the beautiful night sky. the stars began to appear and aaliyah swore the boy beside her could hear her heart beating, so undoubtedly fast. he looked so beautiful, he had felt the same. to him, aaliyah was the most beautiful girl that he had ever seen. sure he may have dated and kissed many people. but to him, no one could compare to his liyah. he had thanked his lucky stars that he was even able to get out of practicing with conrad. the older boy "needing to perfect his arm." he was happy that steven and belly had been able to distract his brother while he snuck out behind the three to meet aaliyah outside by their bikes.
jeremiah had always known aaliyah was pretty. he never thought any different. hell he knew aaliyah was pretty before he ben know what the word meant. but tonight, something had changed. something had changed for the both of them. as they sat there underneath the moonlight, his arm around her shoulders and her leaning in to the boy as a blanket wrapped around them, both of them talking but neither of them actually listening. they knew that the had loved each other, even if the other didn't know. they did. and they were okay with that, for now at least.
——————————————————
"how was your swim?" even though she knew the response she would get, having asked every year, she still asked always happy to hear the boy talk.
"it was good. it was actually my first swim of the summer, i wished you could've joined us though." jeremiah had replied, he had began to lean closer to the girl wrapping a blanket on their shoulders his arm ending on the shoulder opposite to his.
"yeah me too but you know i had to unpack." aaliyah replied leaning her head on his shoulder continuing to look up at the sky.
"yeah, i know. i don't know why you just don't do it tomorrow it's not like you'll finish tonight." the boy replied a smile dancing on both of their lips as he teased the girl in his arms.
"shut up jere." the girl replied shoving him a little letting out a laugh. the boy laughed along with her scooting back to the girl wrapping his arm around her again, she put her head back in his shoulder.
they sat there, just appreciating the beauty of the summer skyline, in silence. it wasn't and uncomfortable silence, no silence between them had ever been. they just sat in each others arms grateful for the presence of the other. they had sat there for about her twenty minutes, the moon fully high in the sky. they didn't move until a chilly breeze had went through them, encouraging them to get up and join everyone in the dining room.
jeremiah had been right, the sunset had been beautiful, but never better than the one from before.
