it’s almost OBNOXIOUS how energic he is this early in the morning. the shop has only just opened & naruto is preparing the equipment when the doorbell goes off. the sight of his favourite customer is enough to make him smile, though he is admittedly surprised to see him this early. sasuke usually pre-order his appointments & they’re usually in the afternoon.
there is no denying his amusement as sasuke brings worth the ointment for his newest addition of ink, & definitely no denying the way he takes a moment to APPRECIATE the reveal of smooth muscle & pale skin as the shirt goes off.
❝ Good morning to you too, Naruto. I’m so happy to see my favourite artist first thing in the morning, Naruto, ❞ he deepens his voice in a MOCKING manner whilst approaching sasuke, lips now curling in a smirk, & he effortlessly squirts some of the medicine onto his fingers. ❝ And here I thought you were a grumpy bastard in the morning! You flatter me, here, sit down. ❞
sarcasm aside, naruto still finds his place behind sasuke as soon as he’s sat down. there is no hesitation as he gently applies the cream onto the dry tattoo. it’s still a piece he’s proud of; a row of BEAUTIFULLY illustrated moons following sasuke’s spine.
❝ Since you brought caffeine, I’m more than happy to follow up on my offer. ❞
@dobehokage made an offer.
He shouldn’t make one if he can’t keep it. Thus, his look of surprise when Sasuke walked into his shop at 8 am with coffee and his tube of ointment is unwarranted. At least he grabbed the moron some caffeine too, right?
“It’s dry as hell.”
He can feel the tightness to his skin, the way it desperately needs moisture. Once he’s placed down the drinks, and given Naruto the medicine, he ignores the amused look the blonde is giving him. Instead, he takes his shirt off. Carefully of course, as the movements pull and he doesn’t want to make himself bleed.
“Don’t offer if you don’t expect me to accept it, dobe. Come on.”

he hasn’t seen sasuke this worked up in ages, but his words don’t really REGISTER. not at first. his lips thin in a tense line, eyes dipping low in an attempt to avoid direct eye contact. it’s a bad day & they both know it, and for once naruto is letting himself be VULNERABLE in front of someone else. as positive & bright as he usually is, even his blue skies cloud over sometimes.

it’s been a particularly bad day & given the fact that he’s been given one of sasuke’s rare motivational remarks must mean it shows far more than naruto would care to admit. because honestly, he is trying his HARDEST to stay positive. to train & be better; he eased up on the pranks YEARS ago, he’s being friendlier, trying to bond & make friends. it’s done little to stop the snide remarks in the village, however. so many still see him as a MONSTER, and it’s becoming increasingly harder to not take it to heart. sasuke’s words help. they’re simple, hardly more than someone stating a fact, but knowing that sasuke doesn’t percieve him as an UNSPEAKABLE evil out for blood truly does help, & naruto can’t help but to hold on to that. where a shadow seemed to loom over him, he now BRIGHTEN, radiant as always, smiling as he gives sasuke a laugh & a nudge.
❝ I don’t need you telling me that, stupid. ❞ he did & it’s blatantly obvious how grateful he is, but a part of him doesn’t want sasuke to see how much it’s been getting to him. still, a few seconds later the smile fades to something SOFTER. more genuine. ❝ —— Thanks, Sasuke. ❞

A long mission, a long trek home. When he's finally back, he seeks out Naruto like his internal gps was on auto-route. He says nothing, doesn't need to. The press of his forehead against the dobes shoulder is more than enough. Whoever Naruto was talking to - in public or not - goes ignored.
it’s been a RIDICULOUSLY long day. having been torn between meetings with the council, public appearances in the village for a variety of reasons, and now a TOWER of untouched paperwork, naruto has now reached a point of exhaustion where he can hardly focus. it’s been weeks, if not months, of this; an endless loop of days and nights spent hunched over a desk. he’s pacing around the office, casting DISAPPROVING looks to the pile of documents that seemingly never stop growing. stood by the desk, shikamaru is begrudingly telling him these papers have to be signed by the morning. —— what a surprise, another night at the office. what a SHOCKER. when he imagined becoming the hokage, this wasn’t quite what he had in mind. ❝ You said that last week as well, surely it’s okay if— ❞ whatever weak protest he had dies down as sasuke walks through the doors, coming straight for him. it comes as SECOND NATURE for naruto to wrap an arm around his waist as sasuke’s head comes to rest on his shoulder.
there is no need for words, naruto can tell when a mission has been HARD on him, so instead he offers silent support while passing an apologetic look to shikamaru. a sigh and a throwaway comment about ‘just have it done by the morning, naruto’ & the other leaves, leaving the two with some privacy. his posture SOFTENS once they’re alone, and the arm around sasuke tightens a little. he can’t help the way his lips quirk in a smile; it’s been some time since they last saw each other & naruto has missed him. ❝ —— You know, I could always assign you paperwork duty. You might die of boredom, but.... ❞
