I saw this and thought of you. What do you think?
Tumblr media
My short answer is: This is a terrible take.
My normal person take is: The whole point of a translation is so the person reading the translated work feels as if it's written in their language, and can get the same level of enjoyment as those who read the work in the source language.
My professional (?) take is: Unless the unique speech pattern is integral to the plot or to indicate that someone or something is NOT native in the source language, you translate everything as close to how native speakers in the TARGET language will say. Meaning, if you're reading an English novel, and there's a French character who uses broken English with French phrases mixed in, it is your job as a translator to keep that brokenness in, and to indicate to the reader that this is not a native speaker. If it's Japanese to English, and a translator translates "今日は晴れです" into "Today is sunny." in hopes of showing the reader a glimpse of another culture's patterns of thinking, I think they should fire that pompous translator and get another who will faithfully translate that as "It's sunny today."
My political take is: This is what China's been doing, to mask their desire to reverse colonize by claiming they're the oppressed. (Mandarin's never needed any preservation. In fact, China's been actively trying to erase its ethnic dialects. If you believe they're doing this for "culture", you need to stop what you're doing and talk to actual East Asians.) The translator claims that it's important to keep the cadence of Mandarin in an English translation, and you'd think "oh yeah, that's culture, we're being inclusive!" It's not. It's entirely disrespectful to both the source and the target languages. This is not what translation's supposed to do, and all it does is imposing Mandarin grammatical rules and rhythm on its English readers, alienating its consumer whilst simultaneously drawing them in with the false pretense of "you'll understand more culture if you read this terribly translated book with no thought of the target audience in mind." This is a terrible way to translate a book because it favors the source language to the point of it happily ruining the reading experience of its English readers. English readers deserve to enjoy a book the way Chinese readers do: to experience it in their native language.
It's absolutely bat shit insane for a translator to try and keep the rhythm and cadence of a source language when it's uncalled for and unnecessary. It's not the job. It's never been the job.
Also: if you want to make it about you, don't become a translator. We are in service of the author and the reader. We do not get to take creative choices or dictate the feel of the text.
We are here to translate, not to reimagine.

I wrote this in 2021.
Now, imagine how things would have gone down, had this bill been passed.
Nobody would have known Nahel was murdered after being threatened at gunpoint. Nobody would have questioned the report from the policemen who said he had tried to ram them over with the car he was driving.
Nobody would have heard those same policemen scream "I will put a bullet to your head" while the car was parked, followed by "Shoot him!"
Nobody would have seen those policemen punching the windshield of the parked car.
Take a second and let that sink in.
Yes there are riots, as there should be. This isn't about Nahel. This is about Adama, Zyed, Bouna, Cédric, and so many others who were murdered by the hand of the crybabies in blue. This is about a situation that hasn't changed since early 2000's.
Last night in Lyon, about 400 far-right neonazis decided to crawl from their cave with the intention to beat up anyone they see.
Not a single one of them was arrested or even remotely worried about running into policemen, despite being out in the open and making their intentions very clear.
You know why?
For the same reason we never see Spiderman and Peter Parker in the same room.
Whenever you see the men in blue, take out your camera and shove it on their faces. It is *your* right. They tried to take it from us, never forget it.
That's the only thing they fear, and that's our best weapon.
Those riots will keep happening, as long as the body in charge of keeping the Police in check isn't independent, as long as the unions act like they're in the fucking Godfather, as long as the government backs them up and nobody speaks.
The Constitutional Council just went ahead and slammed the "Sécurité Globale" bill that was supposed to snatch away anyone's right to film policemen "in action" during protests and whatnot aka, the Golden Way to more unchecked police brutality.
The Constitutional Council deems that this bill goes against basic freedom of the press (DUH). This decision comes one day after the crybabies in blue protested in the streets and blamed our legal system, and "people not being afraid of the Police anymore" for their own inability to do their job. The Minister of Interior (secretary of state in the US) was also there with them because of course he was (oh, and he's also under investigation for rape, lol).
Since they all share the same braincell, during the protest, they "reenacted" a mass shooting of the police by a "thug" and another hooded guy who was the "legal system". After "killing" the police the two of them hug like they're bff. The video is so shockingly cringe, I can't even bring myself to laugh. You can expect that kind of disrespect from people who think their mission is to instigate fear instead of respect. What does it say about them when the people in blue have such a profound misunderstanding of the root of their mission? What does it say about them when they're not able to denounce the systemic racism, violence, and lack of basic training in their own rank? What does it say about them when 74% of active police forces nonchalantly admit that they will be voting for the far-right party in the next election?
Urgh.
So, what does it mean for the bill? It means the legislative branch of power has two choices: rewrite it again, or drop it. With the presidential election fast approaching, there is no time for them to rewrite it. To be approved, a bill has to be greenlighted by the National Assembly along with the Senate (although the National Assembly has the last word and can force its way through). Once it is approved by those two bodies, anyone (random citizen or senator/deputy etc) can summon the Constitutional Council that will review the bill to see if it is in line with our Constitution.
They don't have enough time to do this now, because the legislative calendar for upcoming bills is packed until February/March, at which point, everything will shift towards the election, and any big decision will be put on standby. For once, our legendary bureaucracy maze is actually doing something good.
I think it's safe to call it a small victory.

I am going through Eye of the Beholder. I've read about 2/3 of the chapters now. Not only don't I remember half of what I wrote, I also have no idea if my original plan still stands on its legs or not. Will it still make sense after two years?
I want to write. I want to write.
I will.

A couple tags on my last post got me thinking about the concept of Kassandra and Deimos as (identical) twins rather than brother and sister… which resulted in this very sloppy edit, for your consideration.

I did a thing!
I wrote! So I don't know what's taken over me, but I did a thing. This is really rough because I haven't touched my keyboard for unwork related stuff in a year, be gentle. Please.
This would probably be slotted in chapter whatever after the next chapter of EOTB (does that even make sense?). I had this scene in my head since 2020. For your viewing pleasure.
--
It had been a few hours since Kassandra had found her, the angry winds had turned into a howling storm that had forced them to find shelter in one of the abandoned houses from the village on the outskirts of the valley.
Lara hadn’t taken her eyes away from Kassandra, not when they took off their armor, not when she broke a wooden chair and used its legs to feed the fire, and especially not now, as they laid near the makeshift fireplace, face to face.
“What is it with you and the staring?”
Lara shrugged one shoulder, her eyes trailing across Kassandra’s throat. “I've missed you.” she saw it bob with Kassandra’s snort.
“Shouldn't I be the one saying that. I haven't seen you in months.”
Her fingers rose, curling around a strand of Lara's hair and tucking it behind her ear before cupping Lara’s cheek. Kassandra felt Lara lean into her touch, but not close her eyes.
“It wasn't you,” she said simply.
That, Kassandra knew all too well. Her lips twitched up in a half-smile. "You can tell us apart?"
She had expected a pointed stare, a scoff at the mere notion that Lara couldn't possibly tell Kassandra from her younger self. But Lara only took a deep breath, and blinked slowly before nodding.
Her curiosity picked, Kassandra decided to investigate further. "What gives it away?"
"The eyes," Lara said, her own trailing across Kassandra’s face.
She was taking her in, committing every little mole, crevice and scar to memory, like she hadn’t done so with her lips already. Kassandra felt the weight of Lara’s gaze like a physical touch.
A gust of wind whistled through the gaps of the old wood covering the window. Kassandra suppressed a shiver.
"I look at you differently," she conceded, carrying on their discussion. That made sense.
Lara shook her head, "Not just me. Everything. There's…" she trailed off, pursing her lips. "Longing. Melancholia in the way you look at the world. This world."
Like you’ve already lost it.
“There’s wonder as well,” Lara’s eyes were shining chocolate brown under the firelight. She smiled fondly, “Like you’re rediscovering things for the first time.”
Kassandra could only nod along. “I am. There’s so much I had forgotten, or made myself forget…” she wouldn’t have been able to keep sane, if not for that.
“I know,” Lara whispered, inching closer as she ran her fingers through Kassandra’s hair. “I understand.”
For so long, Kassandra had wished she could have had just a drop of the Lethe river. To ease her mind, let her sorrows drift along, to be carried away by the currents.
“Do you wish you could forget things?” she asked, the thought now entering her mind. “From your past?”
Lara’s fingers kept their motion, but her eyes had lost their focus, staring at the dip of Kassandra’s throat. She mulled over the question for a long time, letting the cracking and popping sound of burning wood fill the silence between them, along with the pitter patter of the rain outside.
“No.”
Kassandra perked up. “No?”
Lara shook her head and wetted her lips. “My memories, they… they made me who I am,” her voice was low, but certain. “They’ve carried me, they've protected me. They’ve shaped me. And they’ve led me here. To you,” she smiled. “I wouldn’t change a thing. I don’t want to forget. I won’t.”
“I love you.”
Lara’s widening eyes was the only indication of what had just come out of Kassandra’s mouth. Rather than let panic creep and nestle between her ribs to squeeze at her heart, Kassandra repeated it.
“I love you,” and because this still felt like it wasn’t enough somehow, she added, “Please never forget it.”
This wasn’t how (or when, or where) Kassandra wanted it to happen, but she refused to take it back.
Lara hadn’t said anything yet, but the initial torpor was gone. Something flashed in her eyes, then slowly, timidly her lips curved up, revealing the most beautiful smile Kassandra had ever seen.
“I won’t.”
