i love it when characters are codependent. i love it when losing someone feels like losing a limb. i love it when two people "complete" each other so wholly and terribly that one can barely function without the other. i love it when the fear of losing the only person who understands them is so all-consuming they'll destroy anything to stay together, including themselves.

when you're a demon & a demonic fox steals your prized possession so you build a trap to catch the sneaky fox, and it works except oh no the fox has now turned into a sexy man with silver hair, & he's staring at you so fiercely and he's the most beautiful person you've ever seen.

and he was already wounded before he fell into your trap and now he's even weaker, and he can't fucking die bc then how are you gonna get your treasure back, so you have to bring him back to your lair to heal him and he keeps trying to bite you and not in the fun way.

and he's fiery and wants to be free and you say you want your treasure back, then he can be free and can go live or die because who gives a shit, he doesn't matter to you!! and the fox boy snaps that what does it matter, it probably wasn't even worth much, but it matters because it belonged to your mom, you fucking dickweed!!! and that's kind of embarrassing to admit actually bc most yokai don't give a fuck about their parents once they've reached adulthood, but here you are, admitting this to some pretty face.

and you're ready to be made fun of, but he's looking at you with big golden eyes, very thoughtful and surprised. and before it can get more awkward, you sense someone approaching and that's when he elects to tell you that he has a hunter on his tail like cool great, now you have to deal with this!!! and you go deal with the hunter and manage to kill him (bc you rock) (and bc the fox already weakened him) and then you see the fox boy trying to escape and you're like HELL NO

so you jump on the fox boy and after a tussle you pin him down (in a sexy way but do NOT think about that, this isn't the time to pop a boner) and say look!!! i took care of the hunter for you, I healed you, the treasure is worthless like you said, so give it to me!!!

and he's looking at you with those assessing eyes, all big and pretty, and you do not beg on principle but you're seconds away from losing it completely, and finally FINALLY he relents. only problem is, it's in his secret hoard. far away. and he has no spirit energy

so you have to fucking walk there and basically protect him along the way. fine. unexpected road trip with a cranky sexy fox boy, who you really hope isn't lying to you. (chances are he is. but whatever. future!you problem.)

on the road y'all fight monsters, bicker, rest, rinse and repeat. he's not so bad, really, once you get past the part where he's a lying thief. on one night, y'all are taking shelter in a cave bc it's raining. you ask him about his history. and he doesn't reply for a while. you're about to shrug and go to sleep when he quietly says that he had a mother too, once. love drips from his words. (i loved my mother too). but she became injured and couldn't provide for him and his sister anymore, so he learned to steal.

he stole food. necessities. and eventually he became crafty and strong enough to steal valuable items, and sell them for a good price. he kept his family alive. but it wasn't enough to save his mom, and his sister disappeared one night. so he kept stealing. it's all he knows. and maybe, through the rumor mill, he can find wherever his sister ran away to, if she's still alive.

the fox boy turns to you, all sad eyes, and says sorry, he wouldn't have taken it if he'd known it was special like that. it's probably the most valuable item he stole, but not in a monetary sense. but a sense of love, which is the rarest item of all in this world. and you're quiet, looking at his sad little smile, how he draws himself in close, making himself smaller.

that night, once you've laid down, you feel a pair of fuzzy ears tickle your chin, a fluffy tail curl around your legs. he's shivering, whether from cold or sorrow, you don't know. you hold him all the same.
