Look, I agree that trying to sell folks on original fiction by citing fanfic tropes is asinine, but at least "oh, it's got enemies to lovers!" tells you something substantive about the plot and characters. I once had somebody try to convince me to read a work of original fiction by telling me that it has a romance with a height gap.

#^^^^ yes thank you!!! #i love fanfic but c'mon guys fic didn't invent goddamn enemies to lovers or there was one bed etc #they didn't even popularize the tropes #they were already plenty popular within the romance genre #what probably happened is that most people that aren't Romance Readers are primarily exposed to those tropes via fic #so that means that fic readers go around thinking they have some claim to these tropes #while non-romance or new-to-romance readers can't really refute these claims because they aren't familiar enough with romance as a genre #to know that these tropes have actually always been pretty damn universal even before fic became widely accepted

I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen. Put some respect on their names.
