NEW TRACK- Soul Saboteur - Somewhere There's A Light On...
Marvellously melancholy blues brothers, Soul Saboteur are back, with a new slice of spirit! The guys ; James Stone (vocals/guitar), Carl-Morgan Peters (lead guitar) and Jason Griffiths (drums,) return with the initiation of a new saboteur! The soothing and breezy Somewhere There's A Light On, thefollow up single to the band's first fresh and notable EP Clip Your Wings, introduces innovative bassist and their 'token Northerner' Andy Hall, alongside guest keyboard player Alan Gregson (also the mastermind behind the tracks production).
Stoney's vocals impress, poignant, sensitive and sorrowful as ever, as we suffer the distress of the song's storyteller who can 'find no comfort in my skin, neither smoking, laughing or drinking...', before the chorus hits handsome and hopefully amorous wails  of 'Somewhere there's a light on for you!' Bluesy guitar twangs and plunks accompany both tenderly and strenuously, with a dreamy drum beat driving the track like a lost love letter floating through the wind.
Tumblr media
The track is available from digital stores July 23rd and available for a listen on Soundcloud now!

The track was written by James Stone and produced by Alan Gregson, West Orange Studio, Preston.

The Post Parklife Weekender Blues...
For most Parklife was the kick off to a whirlwind of 2013 summer antics. The starting pistol to a winding track of festivals ahead, the dreary month of September the finish line. But perhaps many like Hive Radio Manchester's Em Music Matters are already left feeling deflated, the mash up of music , sunshine, drinks and high-spirits by now a distant memory, anticipation for the next festival already a torment. Yet fear not! Brighten your post-Parklife depression with a spot of reminiscence, here is Em's recollection of a fantastic opener to the festival season...
Tumblr media
(The sun may have gone down on Heaton Parks happy and hot celebrations but punters have left with a glorious start to the summer.)
Festivities coolly unravel at the foot of Saturday's Mainstage, Delphic 's indie-dance tunes float across a field of gathering troops enjoying the first beer of the day, as they gather their bearings amongst Heaton Parks vibrantly decorated pitching's. Well known tracks: Doubt and Counterpoint ease it's listeners into a pool of serenity as patrons shake Saturday mornings lie in, whilst more recent Baiya, from 2013's release Collections(a frolic into pop, hip-hop and electronica) is enough to have you stretching, ready for two days of carnage.
Saturday's Special Guests The Temper Trap surprise us with their very own allocated set. We are treated to a slice of Australian indie-wonder, breezy chilling accompaniment and the tranquility of Dougy Mandagi's hauntingly-beautiful, high-pitched vocals. There was rejoice for many as their leading single: (featured on hit-indie-film 500 Days of Summer) Sweet Disposition, thumped across the field, the catchy and recognisable bass line tinkering across a crowd of cheerful onlookers, as Mandagi's soulful sounds bewitch. Though the band are most likely growing tiresome of the 2009 single, it was strummed out with the animation of a first playing.
Tumblr media
(Manchester scrubs up good, Heaton Park colourfully decorated.)
Sticking with the exciting hustle and bustle of the main stage, energy radiates as feel-good Rudimental are fitting to a sunny afternoon. Even with only one debut album under their belt (the chart-topping Home), the group have enough presence and vitality to create the best vibe of the day so far. The electronic 90's feel quartet throw us with everything live and kicking down to the trumpets, joined by Waiting All Night's  smashing female singer Ella Eyre.
Then of course the band of the first day for Em Music Matters has to be a constant favourite: The Maccabees. Many an indie-girl gather towards the front of the stage to sing-along to a vastly generous set,  as battles commence amongst strangers as to whom is a most suitable matching to stunningly handsome lead singer Orlando Weeks, (handbags ladies!) The Brighton boys present a wholesome selection of tracks, from debut Colour It In's  feisty crowd mover First Love, to Mercury Prize nominated Given To The Wild's thrashing Pelican. Weeks addresses the crowd before No Kind Words, declaring life is about those you may have brought along to the festival with you, those you can love and rely on, not those whom may irritate. The response is a heartfelt chant of pointed fingers and cries of 'if you've got no kind words to say, you should say nothing more at all!' as the chorus kicks in, fans united in a moment of elation.
Tumblr media
(Kate Quinn catches the lovely Orlando up close!)
The final act to polish off a fantastic day of main-stage mayhem before a hazy-tired tram ride home and a plonk into tomorrow's hangover, is the legendary Plan B. After role-playing The Defamation of Strickland Banks, Ben Drew is quite the performance artist, he explodes energy and enthusiasm across the park, as bouncing and action erupts beneath him. The likes of hit She Said left ringing in the ears of Saturday's ticket holders, it's live vigour and electricity left pounding through the mind still on the journey home. The day's liveliest track graces the stage as Stay Too Long enthuses all, wishing they could stay a little longer, as the track builds to it's ecstatic and suspense filled finish, Drew's emotive spits speeding to an excitingly nervous climax.
Tumblr media
(Hangover's under control, Sunday see's most back for round two...)
After shaking Saturday's aftermath, Sunday's Now Wave Stage was the place to be for Em Music Matters, stumbling across some fantastic new including the likes of King Krule and Toy. King Krule drew listeners into the tent with the likes of soothingly meandering tracks such as The Noose of Jah City.  Frontman, singer-songwriter Archy Marshall a.k.a Zoo Kid, presents snoozy-soulful, dub-step- funk. Whilst Heavenly Records' London lads: Toy, unravel psychedelic rock much like label friends Temples, yet with a pinch of punk and feist. Their September 2012 release Lose My Way, the epitome of their dark and glooomy The Horrors-esque wonder.
Sunday saw a particularly legendary Special Guest unveiled as to have his own set on the Now Wave Stage. The 'God-like-Genius', past The Smiths guitarist and co-songwriter, legendary: Johnny Marr is crowned king of Sunday's acts, embracing the stage with his own solo career. Marr's first solo single The Messenger bewilders and perplexes with its eerie yet soft beauty in a live format. Contrastingly,  thumper Upstarts is enough to spur a riot in its enormity, a stampede of rock. The tent is even treated to a compilation of The Smithstunes including; Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. As close as anybody under around the age of twenty-five may get to sampling The Smiths live, thisis an imperative moment for many-a-young music fanatic.
Tumblr media
(Photographer Kate gets up close and personal with an indie hero...)
The Horrors ice a fantastically indie Now Wave Stage cake with their perplexing live set, lights, smoke and strobe lights in toe for a mesmerising sight as well as sound. Experimental punky and psychedelic boys, with amazing hair (lead Faris Badwan) unleash their nightmarish sounds upon us, including the frightening vibrancy of second studio album Primary Colours. Voluminous festival number Still Life thuds throughout the tent, commodious and colossal, brimming from its exits. A tune which can only be done justice live amongst an extraordinary and out of this world experience.
Tumblr media
(The mysterious and smart-haired Faris.)
Tearing away from the Now Wave stage early, Em Music Matters catches the end of the Main Stage's last but far from least: Example. His dancey-pop tunes and immense zeal and gusto enough to form mosh-pits and leave many a spectator with a throbbing bruise as a souvenir. Hit tunes; Changed The Way You Kissed Me, and Kickstarts complete the weekend as the crowd sing together in joy and unison, unable to wait and see what is in store next year!

Who's excited for the Parklife Weekender? - Em Music Matters (The Indie Buzz) gives the low down on what she can't miss on the line-up!
Although Parklife may have been coined to have the reputation of a  marvellously mainstream and fulfilled pop-tastic weekend, with some excitingly huge acts footing the bill, there's a few hidden indie and alternative gems amongst the mix of artists that Em Music Matters just can't wait to get her ears around...
Tumblr media
Satruday's Main Stage kicks off with something for everyone on board, massive English rapper Plan B headlines after his directional debut in 2012 with urban melodrama Ill Manors. He's back to his soulful singing and commanding rap. A great contrast on the next act in line with a favourite of Em Music Matters taking the stage: The Maccabees with three colossal indie anthem albums under their
belt, the most recent Given To The Wild debuting at number four in the UK Albums chart. Third from the top, one fitting for the sunshine is Rudimental, their feel-good tracks: Waitin All Night, Not Giving In, and number one hit Feel The Love sure to get the crowd moving. Indie dance anthem creators Delphic along with Temper Trap announced on the list as special guests leaves wonder for what's in store. Is there a chance Heaton Park might hear the beauty of their leading single Sweet Disposition?
Tumblr media
Another singer and rapper tops the listing on Sunday's Main Stage with cheeky-chappy Example sure to smash it with his collection of movers and number one singles: Won't Go Quietly, Kickstarts, Changes The Way You Kissed Me and Stay Awake to get the crowd bouncing in the sun (hopefully, stay with us weather!) Then if like Em Music Matters andthe likes of Rita Ora and Wretch 32 aren't your forte there's one stage you need to head to...
Tumblr media
For those lovers of the indie and alternative worry no more, Sunday's Now Wave Stage has treat after treat in store, the icing on top of the cake psychedelic The Horrors their colossal Still Life to thump across Heaton Park. They are followed by Manchester's own Everything Everything, their unique and critically acclaimed sounds to blow your eardrums live, with tracks from both astonishingly creative debut album Man Alive, and perplexingly inventive Arc. Heavenly Record's: Toy shall also grace the stage, slowly building deserved success, indie-rock physcedelia from London, this is the band Em Music Matters is possibly most excited to catch. See you there?

Those keen listeners of Hive Radio Manchester may be aware of our love for lovely Northern lad and fantastic young singer-songwriter: Ryan Jarvis.
As said by Em Music Matters: ‘Soulful, and not dissimilar to the commercially successful Jake Bugg, Ryan is an endearing indie singer-songwriter. Attending college and achieving talented music at an impressive adolescent age of 18, Jarvis seems passionate and diligent towards his career with his acoustic guitar, with a lengthy list of gigs in check. Unlike the usual arrogance or over-confidence of many a Mancunian musician, (such as those whom have influenced his work: Oasis, Morissey, The Smiths, The Courteeners,), Jarvis is somewhat bashful, perhaps unaware of his own respected originality and class.’
With the charming four-track EP Outside This Town under his belt, Jarvis’ leading tune takes to the screen. Hive Radio’s own clever camera worker  Warda Duale directed the  smart flick below to accompany’s Ryan’s story-telling song which ’powerfully explores entrapment in a northern town of ‘dirty abandoned high rise flats’, and the consequences of youths who can see no alternative escape than to ‘smash a window, knick a car, get off with them brand new jeans...’ Ryan seems to display a quietly confident persona with something to say.’ (As described by Em Music Matters earlier this year.)

Artistically Accomplished & Cultivated – Matthew Whitaker @ MMU Acoustic Lounge 08/05/13
Where you aware that Hive Radio Manchester’s home university actually throws a fantastic live bash every Wednesday afternoon? Well Em Music Matters was thrilled to discover MMU Acoustic Lounge and she is very excited to tell you all about it! Each week MMU’s own Holden Art Gallery sees a lovely little acoustic set from a talented up-and-coming act at around 12:45. A beautiful space becomes filled with some incredible, extraordinary sounds, you know where to eat your butties on a Wednesday lunch time now! (Oh and has it been mentioned that this rewarding experience is absolutely free!?) Get down!
Recently MMU's own creative hub presented soothing sounds  from classically trained guitarist and singer-song-writer Matthew Whitaker. Em Music Matters afterwards was thrilled to catch the talented chap for a natter...
Finding poignant and handsome classical piano piece Apricity on Matthew's soundcloud page before the event left Em Music Matters expecting the tranquil scene of a restful pianist on this afternoon, yet she was blown away by the pleasant surprise of the cheerily faced, bearded fellow being armed with a guitar and a perplexingly lulling voice. We find that despite its splendour, 'Apricity is the first sort of piano piece' Matthew has composed, 'I got given a piano for my birthday by my family and it's just a result of that really' he exceptionally modestly explains, 'I'm not much of a pianist'.
Tumblr media
Matthew soothingly sings.
Once part of formerly thriving band 'Whiskey Cats' Whitaker has spent the past year or two following his own sounds. Classically training in guitar 'from an early age of about nine' he brings something different to the musical table, presenting intricate melodies and chords to us today, happy to be 'in this lovely little room which has a nice acoustic in it.' Matthew illuminates us on how using his classical knowledge as a singer-songwriter only became apparent to him in recent years: 'it's something I should incorporate as it's something not everyone can do, and it's sort of a part of me as well.' The endowed musician elaborates on a clueless younger self, unaware of his unique ability 'When I was about 15 I started writing songs, it didn't occur to me at the time to involve the kind of things that I'd learnt from classical guitar... I think they sounded like any sort of songs a 15 year old could write, I'd be thoroughly embarrassed is anyone was to hear them now!' he laughs. 'Only in the last 2-3 years have I realised it's something I should be doing,' we are told. Thank goodness he did, or else the world may never have been graced with such aptitude of the guitar strings.
Tumblr media
Older and wiser with the listening of classical masters such as Debussy behind him as influence, Matthew shows a sampling of his tunes available on MySpace such as; The Man With The Anvil Hat, an enchanting, cooling tale of  a man 'waiting for a stroke of luck'  to drift us into the calm on a mid-week afternoon. We are also indulged with cover of a heart-warming Everybody's Talkin', Matthew's smile heard amiably through his vocals as well as seen upon his countenance, the accompaniment strummed exquisitely.
We are excited to discover that this vastly gifted artist has an album in the making, which features a drummer, double bass and electric guitar 'to decorate the songs', he also often gigs with a full band having songs 'I feel I can't play just on an acoustic guitar.' What is even more exhilarating is the fact the album is being produced with the likes of later Charlatans and New Order producer Jim Spencer. But we are told 'As you can imagine he is a very busy man!' so the record will be mixed and completed 'as and when he's got time to finish.' Both Em Music Matters and Hive Radio Manchester await in anticipation...

Disorder and Misbehavior with - The Naughtys @ Gullivers, Manchester 11/05/12
As it well may be known both Em Music Matters and other members at Hive Radio Manchester are a big fan of the raucous and rampant boys, bringing innovative music from Stretford: The Naughtys, after catching them a few moons ago at one of last year's Bench Lunch Time Live chilling acoustic sessions. Tonight upstairs in Gulliver's events room which is plastered with old-school posters, hot and sweaty, bumbling with people and buzzing with energy we feel taken back in time to the magic days of Northern Soul gigs, as The Naughtys show us just how unruly and mischievous they can be...
Tumblr media
The fractious set of magnificent Mancunian disarray and rowdy performance saw the likes of 'Stag Do', a rocky rascal tune, buoyant and bouncy, about the likes of a Stag Do in England as 'we thought we was too poor to go abroad oh-oh!' One to have the crowds energy fall into effervescent and animated misbehaviour, one for the loud, boisterous lads (and the equally eager lasses!) We were also treated to uncensored version of riotously entertaining rudely named TWAT, a whirling rocky-jivey track of irrevocable speed and vigour which sent a descent of commotion amongst spectators whom belted along to comical chorus 'You don't know where it's at... You're a twat!'
Tumblr media
(Tonight The Naughtys were far from that quiet afternoon at Bench a few months back...)
The walls of Gulliver's confined yet intimate live space of course shook with the sound of a colossal collaboration, The Naughtys joined by their evenly endowed rapper friend: Baileyz on Nevermind. The hip-hop meets ska song which has even the unexpected targets of rap music bouncing and spitting along to lyrics such as 'if you can't get a n*sh go pay a wh***e!'  Any band that can successfully have Em Music Matters loving a spot of rap music have got to be something big.  The boys rounded up the night with a belting 'We Could Have Been Anything We Wanted To Be,' and with gigs as immense and brisk Hive Radio Manchester give the nod, they certainly should achieve something with their more than able capability to perform.
Tumblr media
(A scrappy picture among the wondrous chaos...)
For fans of a rowdy night out and a vigorous bound and sing-a-long, (I'm looking at you, you outrageous Twisted Wheel and The Enemy lovers) The Naughtys live and in full swing, is a brutally implausible experience of debauchery, not to be missed! But not only that, with a turbulent ska-bluesy-punk resonance that is not dissimilar to The Jam and The Specials, this band are not just a slice of charismatic entertainment, but musical aptitude to observe.

PRETTY GREEN INTRODUCES... The Quangos - 04/05/2013
Liam Gallagher's clothing line is not just notorious for its sense of cutting-edge style but for it's musical taste it seems. Manchester's own store (King Street) proves on the ball as last Saturday they invited one of Hive Radio Manchester's favourites into their store, kings of Rhythm & Blues : The Quangos. A band I'm sure Mr Gallagher himself could be impressed with.
Tumblr media
Amongst the trendy polos, swarve shirts and prim parkas Saturday saw Mancunian lads; Josh Goddard (vocals), Phil Nixon (guitar), Drew Palmer (bass), and Scott Parkinson (drums) bringing it back with old-school Rhythm and Blues.  These guys bring something unique and matchless to the Gallagher-loved Manchester scene, by taking us back in time to an era of real rocking R&B yet successfully achieving a quirky-modern twist to their classic sound.
Tumblr media
Their set saw tracks from long-established influences such as Ray Charles the bands cover of mature song I Got A Woman energetic and electric, innovative and novel.  Whilst their own tunes such as the foot tapping, bluesy, She Don't Live In Town No More (available on the bands Spring Sessions E.P) and funky, up-beat, hip wiggler, soulful 60's sounding single You Don't Know My Name (chic official video to the track available on You Tube.)
Keep your eyes peeled on not just the best coloured Pretty Green polo or perfectly patterned shirt available at King Street Manchester's store, but the incredible up-and-coming acts performing on their shop floors. This week sees Pretty Green introducing The Last Party.

A Exuberant Evening!- Ben Mcewan, JJ Rosa, Soul Saboteur and Brother & Bones @ Jabez Clegg - 25/04/13.
One fine Thursday evening Em Music Matters and lovely fellow presenter on Hive Radio Manchester, Kate Quinn where invited by acoustic-rock/electric-blues band Soul Saboteur to their mere yet marvelous second gig at Jabez Clegg (event presented by Dusty Pop Entertainment), alongside an exuberance of other exceptional acts: soothing Ben Mcewan, funky soul-sister JJ Rosa and rocky-folk boys Brother & Bones. We were also graced with the pleasure to chat with James Stone, lead singer of Soul Saboteur. Four fantastic musical artists in just the one evening left the crowd in contentment...
Tumblr media
The initial delight of the night came from opening singer-songwriter Ben Mcewan armed with his 7 piece band and a delectable mixture of instruments; including a puzzling flat Cello (which upon sensible consideration must have simply been an electric adaptation), keyboard, guitar, double bass and more. The down to earth, lulling cozy and gentle sounds brought the event off to a soothing start, treating the crowd to an early glimpse of charity single Eyes Of A Soldier available June 29th, meaningful and moving.
Tumblr media
(Serving one: a chilled slice of Ben Mcewan.)
Our second course of entertainment came from a favorite lady of Hive Radio Manchester: JJ Rosa (read a previous blog on the unfathomable female here: http://hiveradio.co.uk/2013/02/24/jj-rosa-the-deaf-institute-manchester-05022013/). A saucy and soulful distinctive diva, Jessie performed a little differently for us this evening, presenting an acoustic set, stripped back and solo. The unique noise of this talented lady were not to fault without her band however, Jessie's rock-pop/hip-hoppy vibe even more invigorating undressed down to its capable core. A mistress of the guitar and with  a poignant voice and individual style, she indulged us in new demo Cry Out, captivating and catchy number with the earthiest of authentic beats, alongside emotive Talk To Me, oozing with cool-girl-power Step Aside and spine-tingling, room-silencing, touching cover of Hendrix's Little Wing.
Tumblr media
(Next up a flavorsome set from fantastic songstress: JJ Rosa.)
The band we had our eye on for the night next braced the stage for what was just their second gig but alarmingly gratifying. Having 'only been together for like three months' tonight's performance is more than impressive, though Soul Saboteur may be a new venture, it'smembers it seems are each massively musically experienced. They collaborate strongly to generate bluesy and impassioned rock, the backbone of the bands craft James Stone (Stoney) who's powerful lyrics and soulful vocals place a unique and distinctive mark on the bands work.
We are fortunate enough to chat to Stone, the front-man and youngest in the band backstage, 'I'm 28, not like the rest of the band, (I won't say their ages but they're quite old', he cheekily jokes as he tells us the band came together through auditions for artists with 'the same idea.' Residing in Preston and Manchester so far the band from have already an impressive EP: Clip Your Wings (recorded at West Orange Studio, Preston) under their belts and have been busy booking gigs and getting their newborn yet notable band out there.
Tumblr media
(Thirdly a helping of fresh, both electric and soothing Soul Saboteur.)
Manchester based musician Stonie previously worked in The Loaded Dice for eight cultivating years, currently studying a degree in Popular Music. This may explain his outstanding flair as a lyricist, his vocals consisting somewhat of poetry and soul, his spirit bringing a soothing ambience to the band. The endowed front-man explains his words are 'all autobiographical, people I see, experiences... but if the tenants in the lyric is me I often make it someone else... I don't know it's quite scary I think, if everyone knew exactly what you were saying about yourself...' Careful not to bear his soul but creative and emotive Stonie claims: 'I'm all for a good lyric but I wouldn't go and explain exactly what it was about so they could see inside me.' Stone may be the brains behind the exceptional song-writing but, 'everyone brings their own bit to the table,' he explains...
Lead guitarist Carl Morgan demonstrates his years of capable experience, once a session musician and music teacher, rocking out at The Royal Albert Hall in 1990. Whilst drummer Jason Griffiths makes evident his skills on the kit from the very young age of 11! The band are recently to appoint (I am sure another talented member) new bassist Andy Hall.
Tumblr media
The set list from these edgy, marvelously melancholy blues brothers consists of tracks from their first EP. The title track Clip Your Wings a slow, restful enchantment with a solid beat and blissful melody is received well as Stone sings 'Clip your wings tonight, you don't deserve to fly. It's never falling out of love that bites,' both haunting and a little bit beautiful. A second favorite of Em Music Matters Dark After Dark, mysterious and moody vocals alongside professional accompaniment.
So, we ask it's lead what's to come of this blossoming band? 'I could sit here and do we'll be at Wembley next week or expect to be watching countdown and eating a pack of peanuts, you know what I mean?... I hope to be moving as fast as we can... but steady progress will do me.' Well from Em Music Matters viewpoint, a punishment of day-time TV definitely isn't on the cards for Soul Saboteur, but who knows what the future holds for this talented bunch.
Tumblr media
(A final course: some heavy folk rock from Brother & Bones.)
Finally but not lastly the night introduced a Mumford & Sons meets heavy hair-swishing, head-banging rock band Brother & Bones. Though Em Music Matters has to admit mid assignments she had to rush off for the train, only catching a glimpse of the set, one track of heel bashing, guitar hammering and folksy vocals was enough to win her over. Be sure to check them out as she certainly will be further!
