Honestly, one of my favorite tropes is whumpee who never got enough attention/affection and/or were always betrayed, replaced and second best, so as long as they’re whumper’s favorite or whumper’s only victim they’ll develop Stockholm Syndrome so fast

Tragic Backstories That Aren't 'Dead/Abusive Parents'

It's nice, but a tad overused.

-Being from a war-torn region

-Death of a sibling or friend

-Living in poverty

-Social rejection from peers

-Long term illnesses that make living difficult

-Surviving a severe natural disaster, but losing everything

-Abusive mentors/teachers

#the dead sibling trope is a personal fave bc I can write that from experience

Whumpee who used to be a sweetheart but after their captivity comes out angry, lashing out and kicking and screaming. Whumpee’s friends hardly recognising the person that they’ve become.

Psych Whump Masterlist

This is going to be my go-to list every time I find something with medical or psych whump in it that I want to remember. I'll reblog it frequently and try to keep it updated but it's going to start small because good psych whump is so hard to find. (This in no way endorses medical abuse, I'm a mentally ill individual but I love consuming psych whump in media. Just about everything in these movies, books, etc are at the very least morally gray so consume at your own risk. Also, I only enjoy these things in fiction. Irl it makes me sick to my stomach, I know bc I've experienced some of this.) I'll try to add trigger warnings for each one but I might miss some so I apologize in advance. If you have any recommendations please message me! I'm scouring the internet for good psych whump but medical/sickfic whump is also wanted.

Movies:

A Cure For Wellness: Guy gets tricked into becoming a patient at a "resort" that's really a mental hospital in disguise that uses its patients for nefarious means. CW: incest, medical abuse, teeth falling out, sexual assault, some weird eel shit ^^There's probably more but I haven't watched the film in a while.

TV Shows:

Moon Knight: Whole season of psych whump, the main character has DID and loads of past trauma. Has a huge ancient Egypt theme and the MC gets (kind of) forced to accept psychiatric care. CW: lots of ableism, mental break, psychotic episodes, forced institutionalisation, child abuse, restraints

Books:

House of Leaves: This book is a fever trip but the MC (kind of?? The book has multiple authors, it's honestly very confusing but it's great) suffers from declining mental health and spirals hard. CW: child abuse, lots of sexual content, mentions of a caretaker beating a child, mentions/delusions of sexual assault, death of a dog (it was brutal, huge warning), mentions/descriptions of suicide and attempted murder

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: This is chock-full of psych and medical whump, it all takes place in a psychiatric hospital (I've actually been to the one in the film! -Not as a patient) CW: huge amounts of abuse from staff, doctors, nurses, there's also a scene where SA is implied on a patient, the MC is there after being convicted of SA'ing a minor and he's pretty unremorseful (the MC is a dick though anyways), racism, ableism

Amelia rounded the corner and stood at the entrance to Caretaker's office.

"Sir, may I come in?", she knocked.

Caretaker glanced over to the door looking over the rim of his reading glasses.

"Yes, Amelia come in, I apologize for the mess. This new Whumpee has brought on some new challenges", he looked into the book he was researching in and weakly smiled, "I haven't had much time to tidy up."

"I thought you would like to know Whumpee is cuddled up on the couch resting", Amelia looked around, "if you'd like, I can tidy up for you."

"No-no, you've done enough, you need rest", Caretaker smiled cheerfully, "I can get to it in a little while."

"Caretaker when did you last eat?", Amelia walked to the desk, concern spread over her face.

"Don't ask," Caretaker grinned, "I just ate a granola bar though."

"No you didn't" Amelia smiled and pointed.

"Yes I did", he followed where she pointed and saw his opened granola bar sitting on the desk, "oh oops."

"Sir, I'm going to take a line from your book", she reached for Caretaker's hand, "your body needs time to recuperate, you've pushed and pushed it."

Caretaker smiled, "I know, its just this Whumpee has a lot more, um, trials than you did. You were a hard case don't get me wrong, but your torturer was a by the book torturer. This new case, I'm surprised Whumpee is alive, they need me."

"If you run yourself ragged, there might be a moment when you are needed, and won't be able to help", Amelia frowned, "I can't allow my Caretaker, the person who helped me so much, hurt themselves like that."

Caretaker stood up and went to hug her, "okay Amelia, your right. Thankyou so much for reminding me, I'll get some rest."

"I have dinner prepared for you on the table, please eat, then take a nap", Amelia hugged him tighter, "I'll watch over Whumpee, and if we need you, I'll come get you, how does that sound."

"It's sounds good", Caretaker let out a yawn and stretched, "I guess my body is ready too."

They went to the dining room, Caretaker glanced over to where Whumpee was resting. He walked past the food, right to them.

Amelia crossed her arms, "Caretaker your food."

"Just a second, just want to check", Caretaker glanced back at her, but suddenly stumbled.

Amelia ran to him, "Caretaker."

Caretaker was able to catch himself, "I'm alright, my knee gave out."

"That's it sir, I need you to sit right here", she guided him to a couch.

"Now your sounding like me again", Caretaker laughed.

"I learned from the best", Amelia grabbed the plate full of food, "please eat, you can sit right here and watch me take care of Whumpee, and tell me what needs to be done."

Caretaker grabbed the plate, "okay, okay, this looks really good by the way", he sat back, and started to eat, Amelia even got him his Bourbon.

"I shouldn't, I want it, but they need me to be at a hundred percent", Caretaker sighed, "I will happily take some milk though, if it's not to much trouble."

"Absolutely", Amelia smiled.

Amelia served the milk, and went to work on taking care of Whumpee. She did it in the same way Caretaker took care of her, temperature checks, gentle hands, soothing voices, and they kept up a cool clothe on Whumpee's forehead.

Whumpee whimpered but gave her a gentle smile. "Thankyou", they whispered.

"Your welcome", she whispered back.

"Their temp is fluctuating", Amelia smiled back at Caretaker, "we might see it break tonight if we are lucky."

"That's good", Caretaker smiled, "my, I may be looking at the next caretaker when I am either too old or dead to do this. You're doing such a good job."

"No one can replace you sir", Amelia smiled back at him, "I'm only copying how you take care of me."

Caretaker leaned back in the chair, "I might take you up on that nap, if that ok?"

Amelia took the plate and cup from his lap, "please rest, I'll let you know if we need you."

Caretaker went right out knowing Amelia was there.

Amelia sat on the floor next to Whumpee and talked. She patted their sweaty feverish head and dabbed the cold towel around their forehead. She talked about what had happened to her and how she met Caretaker, and told Whumpee it would be better soon.

"You are in Caretaker's care now", she smiled and looked at the resting Caretaker, memories flooded her mind. "Caretaker and I will be here for you at every step of the way."
