Grimm appeared midair and spiked downwards towards Raithe, skidding with a sharpened angle for attack.

When Grimm reappeared Raithe’s tendrils pushed against the ground, throwing them away from the spiked attack before they caught themselves and launched themselves at the other, one of the tendrils swiping forward to try and get a hit in on the other.

Waiting until the last moment, Grimm skirted backwards, away from Raithe’s attack. He stood straight and opened his cloak towards them, launching three firey flying bugs at them.

When this attack finished, he swirled into his cape and vanished.

Raithe managed to dodge the three fiery bugs, but by the time they finished the troupe master as gone. Tensing up they glanced around the arena, tendrils pressing against the floor to prepare to spring the vessel out of the way of whatever Grimm was planning.

Grimm would puff a laugh of distant amusement and wave off the three grimmkin.

“The better the performance, the better the chance.”

He would step more into center stage, away from the hearth. He would spread his arms wide with a grand gesture and face Raithe.

“Come, my friend! Show us you are worthy of a starring role! Give us a show we shall never forget!”

He’d bow deeply to Raith as Brumm began the music for the dance.

Raithe had to bite back the urge to laugh with Grimm, feeling much more at ease then one would expect after challenging the master of the troupe to a ‘dance’ They followed Grimm to the center stage. They would’ve liked to form a plan for this, but Grimm was a complete unknown.

They bowed with the other, a sign of mutual respect before they stood up. Once the music began they ran forward, but unlike before their tendrils came out right at the start, a few of them lunging forward to ‘punch’ Grimm in the gut, but this was actually a feint to catch them in the side with other tendrils when they dodged.

At least, Raithe assumed they would dodge.

In the manner of a leader, Grimm would look down to Raithe as they reached the hearth. Not quite standing side by side, but, a distance of respect. Grimm spoke again, more directly towards Raithe now.

“Little Shadow, child of sources better forgotten, you have come to join our troupe. You have come to join the nightmare heart. We welcome you warmly, but not yet with open arms. First, the heart must decide the fate of you. The worth you show to this troupe. For this, you must dance!”

He sways his arm towards the audience, who cheers and claps. A small variety of grimmkin flit forwards.

“To begin, you must choose a partner, Little Shadow. You have four options.”

Though, only three grimmkin were there. Grimm would step forwards, presenting himself as the fourth option.

“Choose well, Little Shadow; your fate may depend upon it.”

Raithe maintained the distance as well, feet planted firmly in place. They listened intently as the troupe master spoke, taking in their words.

‘Child of sources better left forgotten’ Were they really? Someone needed to remember. To hold those responsible accountable.

Raithe’s attention would shift over to the three Grimmkin that took their place on the stage, though would tilt their mask-like visage slightly as they noticed the discrepancy in what Grimm said and the number of partners, though their confusion was soon cleared up as Grimm stepped forward.

There was almost a minute’s silence as the little shadow pondered their options, then raised their hand...to point at Grimm.

“The better...the partner...the better...the show, right?” They’d remark...and one could almost see a playful smirk curling their mouth.

They really weren’t like other vessels.

Grimm would seem to dissappear, and soon, Brumm would begin to play. Grimmkin of all sizes filtered into the tent, sorting into the seats and “standing” audience. They’d chatter and whisper excitedly about the initiation, and they’d wait with anticipation.

Divine could be seen, slinking in through the entrance and sliding close to the hearth. She’d stay withing the audience range, but as close as she could be to the center.

The lights would dim to only the scarlet glow of the flames on poles and the dull eyes of every troupe member. The music would come to a hush as Grimm appeared at the hearth and stood tall.

“My kin and blood, my veins and limbs, my dearest companions and wonderous members… Today, we will have before us a stranger to the troupe. Tonight, we will have a new member. By the light of the nightmare flame shall we call this soul unto us, and by the pulse of the nightmare heart shall they be bound.”

he raised his hand from his cloak, “So, with this blaze, shall the Troupe Initiation,” he snapped, the curtains Raithe sit behind opening, all flames burning brighter in it’s echo; the eyes of each member glowed a vibrant red, and Brumm began the haunting melody of the true troupe, “begin!”

Raithe waited behind the curtain of the stage, staying silent and still as they waited to be called. They could hear the music echoing through the tent, and the excited chattering of the troupe members, but...they weren’t nervous. They’d fight tooth and nail to secure their place in the troupe.

As Grimm appeared and began to speak, the vessel assumed their time to enter the stage was soon approaching. They’d stand up, stretching to make sure they could move as easily as they could. As Grimm’s fingers snapped and the curtains parted, one could see the light of the brightened flames reflected in their eyes. An echo of the troupe before them, or a sign of what’s to come?

Raithe’s eyes scanned the crowd as they took their place on the stage, considering their potential partners, before their gaze rested on the troupe master. As much as they appreciated Divine’s presence, or because of it, they felt they might not fight as hard they could with her. As for the Grimmkin...they had already won against one of them, and it felt cheap to go with something with an already proven outcome. Besides, this was their initiation. Surely that’d call for something a bit more...grand.

“Everyone only need be gathered. Brumm will be playing the accompaniment, and, if you’d like, Divine will be with you in the back when things begin. I will wait at the hearth and all others will observe.”

He’d nod to Brumm, who’d walk off to the tent wall behind the hearth.

Raithe would nod as well, standing up from their spot. “I’ll wait...in back. Divine go...where wants.” They’d remark in their usual broken voice, turning to head behind the stage. As much as Raithe enjoyed Divine’s company, they figured she might want the view from the audience instead.

The grimmkin hesitated, and took the cup back before flitting off again.

shortly later, Grimm walked in with Brumm at his side.

“-its been so long, are you certain you remember the melody?”

“Mrmm. Of course, master.”

“Absolutely sure?”

“There is nothing to worry of. I’m certain everything will go fine. Mrmm”

Brumm looks over at Raithe, then Grimm glances over as well.

“Ah, you are still here! Grand! Are you feeling refreshed now?”

Raithe silently watched the Grimmkin leave, before staring off into the distance as they tried to think of how they would fight come the ritual itself. Going all in as they had had finished the fight with the grimmkin quickly, but it had also tired them out fast as well. If the fight lasted longer they might wind up too tired to defend themselves.

Eventually their wonderings would be interrupted at the sound of the two bugs walking into the tent, the vessel perking up and turning their attention to them. At the question the vessel would nod, before offering one of their own.

“Is...it time...for...initiation?”

soon, a small grimmkin flitted up to Raithe with a, notably very fancy, cup of water. The cup was clearly not made for casual use. The grimmkin gave it to Raith and sort of just… floated there.

Raithe didn’t immediately connect the cup to their request, as it was much to fancy for someone like them. However they soon would notice it, looking between it and the grimmkin for a moment before taking it in their hands. They’d quickly gulp down the offered drink, sighing after and giving the grimmkin a quick thank you in return and offering the cup back.

For a moment, he was confused. The Grimm Troupe members never required water or food to live, their sustaining factors being the energy of the nightmare heart. The only time fund or drink was used was for pure entertainment. Grimm had not thought once that a vessel would require drink, but this vessel was already far different than any he’d encountered, so it might as well.

He straightened himself out with an authoritive puff, telling Raith to remain in the tent and that he would return shortly. Despite being well versed in all thinks fire and heat, he forgot that sometimes, you need to put out the flame.

Raithe wasn’t entirely sure themselves they needed a drink. They were just tired and overheated from fighting in such a hot environment that a drink just felt like it’d really help them relax and recharge. They’d nod as they were told to wait, sitting on the edge of the stage as they waited for the troupe master to return.
